Israel sending negotiators to Doha to ‘close gaps’ in deal, Israeli journalists say

Israel is preparing to send a negotiating team to Qatar, potentially as early as tomorrow, in a bid to hammer out details of a ceasefire agreement, Israeli journalists are reporting.

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that Israel’s cabinet would discuss Hamas’s response to the ceasefire proposal tonight, and had not rejected it, believing that it was something to work with.

Barak Ravid, global affairs correspondent for Axios, posted on X that an Israeli official had told him Netanyahu had decided to send Israeli negotiators to Doha, travelling tonight or tomorrow.

He said they were heading to the Qatari capital for “proximity talks” with Hamas in a bid to “close the remaining gaps and reach an agreement on the final details of the Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal”.

Ben-Gvir calls on Netanyahu to ‘abandon path of surrender’ with Gaza ceasefire

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir says the central goal of the war is the destruction of Hamas.

In a post on X, he wrote that any ceasefire agreement that would demilitarise Gaza in the future or include Israeli withdrawal from “conquered territories”, the release of Palestinian prisoners or “revitalisation of Hamas with humanitarian aid” would constitute a “reward for terrorism”.

“The only way to achieve victory and securely return our hostages is through the complete conquest of the Strip, a total cessation of ‘humanitarian’ aid, and the encouragement to emigration. I call on the prime minister to abandon the path of surrender and return to the path of victory.”

Netanyahu tells Ben-Gvir, Smotrich he will not end war without demilitarising Gaza: Report

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told hardliners in his cabinet that he will not end the war without demilitarising Gaza, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority is reporting.

The Israeli leader reportedly made the statement to National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, influential far-right hawks in his cabinet, amid deliberations over a ceasefire deal over the war in Gaza.

As we reported earlier, Ben-Gvir recently posted on X that promising to demilitarise Gaza in the future and striking “a partial deal now” that included the Israeli withdrawal from “conquered territories”, the release of Palestinian prisoners or “revitalisation of Hamas with humanitarian aid” would constitute a “reward for terrorism”.

Israel says Hamas changes to ceasefire ‘unacceptable’

On X, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office says, “The changes that Hamas is seeking to make in the Qatari proposal were conveyed to us last night and are unacceptable to Israel.”

Hamas feels that the general framework of the deal is fine, but is looking for three core amendments.

They wanted talks for ending the war to happen immediately, regardless of the 60-day pause in the fighting. They want humanitarian aid to go through the channels that were there before the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation became involved. And they had requirements about where Israeli forces could be in Gaza as part of this deal.

According to the Israelis, those three amendments are unacceptable.

Demonstrations in cities across Israel demand ceasefire, return of captives

Footage on social media shows large crowds of protesters marching in Israeli cities to demand a ceasefire deal to end the war and return citizens held captive in Gaza.

The protesters gathered in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and Be’er Sheva, beating drums, waving yellow flags, a symbol of support for the captives, and carrying portraits of those still held in Gaza.

Netanyahu ‘certainly does not want to end the war in Gaza’

We’ve spoken to Omer Bartov, an Israeli-American scholar of Holocaust and genocide studies at Brown University, about the sticking point in negotiations: whether the ceasefire should be for 60 days or permanent.

Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu has said Hamas’s request for the deal to be for a permanent end to the war is unacceptable.

Bartov said he believes that Netanyahu “certainly does not want to end the war in Gaza”. “What he’s trying to negotiate is something that feels really cynical – both from the point of view of the war that is constantly happening in Gaza, and from the point of view of the families of the hostages,” he said.

He said this is because the ceasefire proposal only provides for the return of 10 Israeli captives held by Hamas, “out of presumably 20 who are still alive”.

“That will make it possible for [Netanyahu] at a certain point to say: ‘Hamas has not met all the conditions and, therefore, we have to resume the fighting’,” said Bartov. “And Hamas will have to accept that.”

He said that if Netanyahu stops fighting, it could lead to the fall of his government. “What he’s doing now is hedging his bets.”

Thousands of families cut off from water in Gaza City

A municipality spokesman has told Al Jazeera that thousands of families in eastern Gaza City have been without water for about a week.

Asem al-Nabi said the water blockade means Palestinians there are now suffering from a state of dehydration that cannot be addressed without external intervention.

Twenty Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in northern Gaza

Israeli forces have bombed two homes in western Gaza City, killing at least 20 people, including women and children, a source at al-Shifa Hospital told our colleagues on the ground.

People search for survivors in the rubble of a building in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood in Gaza City in the central Gaza Strip that was hit in an Israeli attack

Mahmoud al-Sheikh Salama, a witness to one of the attacks, said it took place at 2am (23:00 GMT on Saturday) while he was sleeping.

“We heard a loud explosion, and shortly after, another one. We rushed over … and people were trapped under the rubble – four families, a large number of residents,” he told Al Jazeera.

“We tried to search for survivors and managed to pull out two people alive from under the rubble after about three hours of struggle and breaking through the debris. We got two out alive – the rest were martyred and are still trapped beneath the rubble.”

Four killed in southern Gaza

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic, citing sources at Nasser Hospital, report that four Palestinians, including three children, have been killed in an Israeli attack on a tent west of Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

Gaza death toll rises

The Palestinian Health Ministry says at least 80 bodies and 304 wounded people have arrived at hospitals across Gaza over the past 24 hours.

Since Israel broke the ceasefire with Hamas on March 18, at least 6,860 Palestinians have been killed and more than 24,220 wounded.

Since the start of the war on Gaza in October 2023, Israeli forces have killed at least 57,418 Palestinians and wounded 136,261, with thousands of additional victims buried under the rubble.

More casualties reported across Gaza

We are now receiving news of more Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. Here are the latest:

  • A source at al-Shifa Hospital said six Palestinians were killed and many wounded in an Israeli attack on a school-turned-shelter for displaced people in Gaza City’s Shati refugee camp. Palestinian sources said the bombing targeted the Abu Asi School, noting that children were among those killed.
  • Sources at Nasser Hospital said three Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire near an aid distribution site near Rafah in the south.

Israeli attacks across Gaza today have killed at least 48 people, including 36 in Gaza City.

Israeli forces blow up school in Gaza’s Rafah

The Israeli army has blown up another school in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

In addition to their bombardment, Israeli soldiers have destroyed countless buildings across the besieged enclave since the start of the war by planting explosives inside. They have filmed and released footage of many such incidents.

Victims of Israeli attacks reduced to pieces

Once again, we’re seeing a significant surge in aerial attacks across Gaza. Those attacked include people inside tents, homes and simply walking on the streets or queuing for water and food in various areas across the Gaza Strip.

Yesterday, there was an attack near a small water desalination plant where people had gathered. That plant, located in the heart of Gaza City, has now been forced out of service after being struck.

Meanwhile, rescue efforts are continuing in the Tuffah neighborhood, where a Palestinian family lost many members. Some are believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Initial footage from the site shows Palestinian Civil Defence crews collecting remains from the ground. Many victims, including children, were reduced to small pieces which had to be placed in plastic bags for transfer to al-Shifa Hospital.

At least five more killed in Gaza City as Israeli attacks continue

A source at al-Ahli Arab Hospital tells Al Jazeera that five Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli attack on the Remal neighbourhood, in the west of Gaza City.

Israeli forces arrest child in occupied West Bank raid

Israeli forces have arrested three Palestinians, including a child, during a raid on the village of al-Mazraa al-Gharbiya, located northwest of Ramallah, Wafa reports. According to security forces who spoke to Wafa, the child was 16 years old.

Israeli soldiers also stormed the Am’ari camp, located in the Ramallah and el-Bireh governorate, the agency reported.

Settlers damage agricultural facility in occupied West Bank

Israeli settlers have damaged an agricultural facility belonging to a Palestinian farmer on the outskirts of Kafr ad-Dik in Salfit province, Wafa news agency reports. Quoting witnesses, Wafa said the settlers damaged the door of the facility, smashed its windows and destroyed the contents.

Land grabs, settler violence in occupied West Bank ‘on the rise'

At the heart of the coalition agreement that brought about this right-wing government in Israel is the annexation of the occupied West Bank and expanding the illegal settlements.

We’ve seen over 70,000 Palestinians forcibly displaced from their homes since January because of the demolitions that are happening in the refugee camps in the northern West Bank as well as settler attacks across the territory.

So while Netanyahu is trying to get concessions from his government on Gaza for this temporary ceasefire while pledging that he is not committing to ending the war, the agenda on the West Bank is going on full steam ahead.

Demolitions, land grabs and settler violence and settler takeovers of land is on the rise while all eyes are on Gaza.

Palestinian killed, two wounded in raid near Nablus

One Palestinian was killed and several were wounded as Israeli forces stormed two homes in the town of Salem, east of Nablus, Wafa news agency is reporting.

Fighting broke out between residents and the Israeli army during the raid.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said a body was retrieved from one of the houses, but the identity has not yet been confirmed. Two other residents were wounded by live bullets. A 62-year-old man was taken to hospital by the PRCS, while the other resident was arrested by Israeli forces.

Second Palestinian reported killed in Nablus raid

The death toll from an Israeli raid in the West Bank village of Salem, east of Nablus, has risen to two, according to the Ministry of Health. One victim was identified as 37-year-old Wissam Ghassan Hasan Ishtiya. His body was taken by the Israeli army, the Wafa news agency reported, quoting the ministry.

A second victim – Qusay Nasser Mahmoud Nassar, 23 – was injured and arrested by the Israeli military. He was later transferred to Rafidia Hospital, but died of his wounds.

Hezbollah chief says no normalisation with Israel

Naim Qassem has delivered a speech on the ongoing tensions with Israel:

  • We are confronting the Israeli enemy in defence of our country and will continue even if the entire world unites to dissuade us.
  • Our goal is to keep the flame of resistance burning despite difficult circumstances.
  • We are ready for peace and for building Lebanon, but we are also prepared to confront and defend our country.
  • Once the first phase of the ceasefire agreement is achieved, we will discuss Lebanon’s defence strategy.
  • We will not be part of legitimising the occupation in Lebanon, and we will not accept normalisation.

Two IRGC members killed defusing explosives left by Israeli forces

Two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have been killed while trying to defuse explosives in an area of western Iran hit by Israeli strikes last month, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

Citing a statement from the IRGC, the report said: “Two members of the Guards were killed Sunday in Khorramabad while clearing the area of explosives left by the Zionist regime’s aggression.”

Israeli strikes during the 12-day war killed more than 900 people across Iran, its judiciary said.

UKMTO reports incident near Yemen’s Hodeidah

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations says it has received a report of an incident 51 nautical miles (94.5km) southwest of Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah.

In an update posted on X, the UKMTO said the vessel had been engaged by multiple small vessels that opened fire with small arms and self-propelled grenades.

It said an armed security team returned fire.

Houthis ‘obligated’ to confront US, Israel

Houthi leader Abdel-Malik al-Houthi said Israel, the US and their allies are considered a “serious threat for the Muslim ummah” who are trying to erase the religious identity of nations and belittle them through undermining their values and taking their resources.

“What the enemy is committing, including what it is doing in Palestine through genocide and all forms of injustice and crime, obligates us, as a matter of faith-based responsibility, to confront American and Israeli tyranny,” he said.

The Houthis had also organised another large rally on Friday, as part of weekly demonstrations to protest the war on Gaza and attacks on Yemen.

What do we know about the ship attack near Yemen and why does it matter?

An armed attack has damaged a ship in the Red Sea off the southwest coast of Yemen, in what could signal that the Houthis are preparing for renewed attacks as they defy Israel and the United States.

Maritime security sources identified the vessel as the Liberian-flagged and Greek-owned bulk carrier Magic Seas.

UKMTO and British security firm Ambrey said eight small boats first targeted the ship with gunfire and self-propelled grenades. Ambrey said four sea drones were launched at the ship as well, which damaged its port side and its cargo.

The ship has taken water, and the explosions resulted in a fire onboard, but no injuries have been reported among the crew so far, who are preparing to abandon ship.

The Houthis have launched many similar attacks since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, but the attacks had largely stopped after the group reached a ceasefire with the US in early May. The group launched a ballistic missile at Israel earlier today, which was intercepted.

The rare naval attack also comes shortly after the US-announced ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Tehran backs the Houthis, who are a member of its “axis of resistance” of armed groups across the region.

Amnesty chief says UK misusing antiterrorism laws amid ban on Palestine Action

Agnes Callamard says the UK government was abusing local antiterrorism laws following their banning of Palestine Action on Sunday.

“The UK government seems more bent on abusing terrorism laws to restrict protests rather than addressing the root cause behind these actions – livestreamed genocide in Gaza,” Callamard said during a speech at Amplify, Amnesty UK’s national conference.

The UK government announced last week that it planned to ban Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000 after activists from the group broke into an air force base in southern England.

‘We have (still) not received a response’ from Israel’s FM regarding allegations: UNRWA chief

Israel’s claims about UNRWA have put its staff at risk and harmed its reputation, the agency says in a post on X.

It quotes its Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini as saying he had sent a letter to the Israeli foreign minister last month, asking for evidence, but that there had been no response.

“In my letter, I also noted that the Government of Israel has not pursued any prosecutions within its criminal justice system, which would also require the presentation of credible evidence,” he is quoted as saying.

According to a UNRWA situation report, Israeli forces killed 272 staff members in Gaza and repeatedly attacked its buildings, including schools housing displaced people.

In October, Israel’s parliament passed two bills banning UNRWA operations, including occupied East Jerusalem, after accusing about a dozen agency staff of taking part in the October 7 attacks.
