Meningitis cases in Gaza rise to 35 during Israel’s aid blockade

The number of confirmed meningitis cases among children in the besieged enclave is now 35, Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza says.

Meningitis is the inflammation of the protective membranes and tissues that cover the spinal cord and brain, and is caused by various species of bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses.

Doctors and aid workers have warned of epidemics given the dire humanitarian situation, and with the enclave’s health system on its knees. The UN has reported rising cases of severe acute malnutrition, chickenpox, jaundice and upper respiratory tract infections.

Israel continues to heavily restrict medicine and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces kill 27 across Gaza, including aid seekers

Among the dead are 10 Palestinians searching for food who were killed in an Israeli air strike at an aid distribution warehouse in Gaza City. The Israeli attack hit the warehouse in the Zeitoun neighbourhood in southern Gaza City, sources at al-Ahli Hospital told Al Jazeera.

Two aid seekers were also killed by Israeli fire near an aid distribution centre in southern Rafah, sources at Nasser Medical Complex said.

No painkillers to treat Gaza children for ‘extremely painful injuries’

Hospitals in Gaza are “completely overwhelmed; there’s not enough beds; there’s not enough staff to treat them; patients are on the floor”, Hannah Grace Pan, a paediatric nurse volunteer from the UK, tells Al Jazeera.

She said many patients and small children are being treated for “extremely painful, explosive injuries and burns with no pain treatment at all because it’s not available”.

Grace Pan used the example of a three-year-old child brought to the hospital last week – the only survivor after his entire family was killed in an air attack. But there was no burn specialist to treat him, and with insufficient fluids and no food, his wounds would take much longer to heal.

One of the most shocking cases she witnessed was a 30-week pregnant woman hit in her tent by shrapnel from an Israeli attack that pierced her chest and cut through her abdomen.

When medical staff removed the baby from her abdomen, they discovered it had been killed by the flying metal, Grace Pan said.

13 aid seekers killed in Khan Younis

The Palestinians seeking food have been killed by an Israeli air strike in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, sources at Nasser Medical Complex tell Al Jazeera. Fifty people have been wounded in the attack.

At least 48 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since morning, sources at hospitals across Gaza said.

At least 60,000 children suffering acute malnutrition in Gaza

A spokesman for Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, Khalil Al-Daqran, spoke to Al Jazeera about the ongoing hunger crisis in the besieged enclave. Here’s a summary of his translated comments:

  • Israel systematically targets hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
  • At least 60,000 children are suffering from malnutrition because of a lack of food.
  • Israel is subjecting the children of Gaza to a policy of starvation.
  • Currently, there is not a single carton of milk available for children in the Gaza Strip.

Israel attacks Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza

About an hour ago, the Israeli military targeted the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Hospital. There was a huge explosion. The army didn’t issue any warnings before it struck tents housing displaced people. Rescue operations are taking place by Civil Defence workers.

The site of the attack is about 10 metres [33ft] from our broadcast point. This is not the first time the hospital’s courtyard has been attacked. At least 10 times this facility has been squarely targeted by Israeli forces.

The hospital’s administrative office was also hit by three grenades dropped by Israeli quadcopter drones. It’s a staggering concentration of attacks on medical facilities, adding further burden on barely functioning hospitals.

Israel’s attack on northern Gaza intensifies with civilians trapped

Israel’s military action in northern Gaza is escalating after it threatened residents to flee “for your safety”.

Israeli tanks pushed into the eastern areas of the Zeitoun suburb in Gaza City and shelled several districts in the north, as aircraft bombed at least four schools after ordering thousands of Palestinians sheltering inside to leave.

“Explosions never stopped; they bombed schools and homes. It felt like earthquakes,” said Salah, 60, a father of five, from Gaza City. “In the news, we hear a ceasefire is near. On the ground, we see death and we hear explosions.”

More than 80 percent of Gaza is now an Israeli-militarised zone or under forced displacement orders, according to the UN.

Latest Israeli attack on Gaza hospital a ‘systematic crime’

We’ve been reporting on Israeli raids on Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza. The Government Media Office condemned the attack, calling it a “systematic crime” against the Palestinian enclave’s health system.

“Its warplanes bombed a tent for the displaced inside the walls of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, resulting in injuries at the site of the bombing, material damage, and directly threatening the lives of dozens of patients,” it said.

It was the 12th time the hospital had been attacked since Israel launched its war on Gaza in 2023.

“We hold the Israeli occupation, along with the US administration and complicit countries, fully responsible for these systematic crimes, which are part of a clear policy to destroy the health infrastructure,” the office said.

Israeli forces demolishing homes in southern Gaza

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report Israeli forces are carrying out house demolitions in Khan Younis.

The demolitions are taking place as Israeli army artillery shells also target northern Gaza City. Forced evacuation orders were issued on Sunday and again on Monday for areas of northern Gaza as a new ground invasion is expected.

Surge in Israeli attacks across Gaza, port area targeted

There has been a noticeable surge in attacks despite the ongoing talks and political buzz suggesting a possible end to this genocide.

In the last couple of hours, a crowd gathered in the southeastern part of Khan Younis was targeted by heavy artillery, despite being positioned far from the distribution centre and even farther from Israeli tanks and armoured vehicles.

Witnesses confirm that the crowd posed no threat. People were simply waiting for food aid. Israeli jets also struck the heart of a displacement centre near the Gaza seaport.

This area serves as a refuge for many traumatised and displaced people, offering some relief from the oppressive heat of the tents.

So far, 21 people have been killed in this attack, including women, children and the elderly. Nearly double that number are severely wounded and have been rushed to hospitals.

However, conditions in these medical facilities are beyond dire due to insufficient medical staff and supplies.

Death toll of journalists from Israeli attacks in Gaza rises to 228

Gaza’s Government Media Office says photojournalist Ismail Abu Hatab has been killed.

Hatab worked as a photojournalist in Gaza with several media platforms and various outlets, the office said on Telegram, adding that he also organised several photo exhibitions outside Palestine to convey the catastrophic reality of Gaza.

Gaza aid site attacks: ‘They fired at us indiscriminately’

Israeli forces have killed at least 21 people and wounded 20 others while they were attempting to get desperately needed food aid in southern Gaza.

Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis said it received the bodies of 11 people shot while returning from an aid site associated with the Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Fund in southern Gaza.

The killings are part of a pattern that has killed nearly 600 Palestinians near the chaotic and controversial aid distribution programme’s sites over the past month.

Ten others were killed at a United Nations aid warehouse in northern Gaza, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Yousef Mahmoud Mokheimar was walking with dozens of others when he saw troops in vehicles and tanks racing towards them. “They fired at us indiscriminately,” he said, adding he was shot in the leg, and a man was also shot while attempting to rescue him.

In a rare admission, the Israeli army acknowledged that Palestinian civilians have been shot dead by soldiers at aid distribution centres in Gaza.

US approves $510m worth of arms sale to Israel

The US has approved a $510m arms sale to Israel, with the deal including thousands of bomb guidance kits, the Pentagon announced.

In a statement, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said the sale includes 3,845 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) guidance kits and additional guidance kits for the MK 82 bomb.

“The United States is committed to the security of Israel,” the DSCA said, adding the sale “is vital to U.S. national interests”.

The principal contractor will be Boeing, based in St Charles, Missouri.

The deal comes amid heightened international scrutiny of US military support for Israel, as civilian casualties in Gaza continue.

The head of the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU), Shaher Saad, has welcomed a powerful joint statement from more than 52 Arab and international trade union federations, which calls for an immediate end to Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Saad described the statement as “a rare document of solidarity that reflects the living conscience of the global labor movement”, warning that more than 507,000 Palestinian workers have lost their jobs during Israel’s war on Gaza.

The statement condemned the bombardment as “a continuing genocide targeting the very existence of a people”.

The cafe doubled as a shelter for war-displaced Palestinians and was also used by activists and journalists because of its wi-fi facility.

“The Israeli occupation bombed this place with its fighter jets. We found people torn apart,” survivor Yahya Sharif told Al Jazeera. “This place wasn’t affiliated with anyone, no politics and not a military association whatsoever. It was packed with people, including children [there] for a birthday party.”

‘Hundreds face death’: Al-Shifa Hospital halts services

The director of Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza has spoken to Al Jazeera about the dire situation at the Gaza City health facility. Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya said after running out of fuel the hospital suspended dialysis treatment, putting the lives of 350 patients at risk.

“At 12pm [10:00 GMT] our generators will stop and hundreds of patients could face death,” Abu Salmiya said. “Unfortunately, we have no options left to address the fuel shortage and will be forced to suspend our services.”

Al-Shifa was Gaza’s largest hospital before it was largely reduced to rubble by Israeli bombardment during the early months of the war. Israeli forces arrested and held Abu Salmiya in prison for seven months, accusing Hamas of using the medical facility as a military base.

At least 2 aid seekers killed in southern Gaza

A source at Nasser Hospital tells Al Jazeera three Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire near an aid distribution centre north of Rafah city. At least 11 aid seekers have been killed so far by Israeli forces across Gaza this morning. The death toll, which now stands at 24, continues to rise.

Israel’s ‘obliteration operations’ in Gaza continue

It has been a very tragic morning again. At Al-Aqsa Hospital, huge crowds of mourners are bidding farewell to loved ones killed in separate Israeli attacks on Gaza’s central area.

Last night, in al-Zawada town, a four-storey building was flattened, with six Palestinians confirmed killed in the attack. Rescue operations to pull victims out of the rubble are still taking place.

Elsewhere, near the Netzarim Corridor, the Israeli military opened fire on hungry crowds trying to approach aid supplies from the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 11 people were killed by Israeli gunfire. Dozens of wounded were brought to hospitals.

There’s absolutely no letup in Israeli attacks. The skies of southern Khan Younis city are covered with plumes of smoke from destroyed buildings during the obliteration operations by the military.

Gaza resident says Israeli forces demolishing homes across enclave

Health authorities say Israeli forces destroyed clusters of houses in Gaza City’s Shujayea and Zeitoun districts, east of Khan Younis and in Rafah, according to Reuters.

Ismail, a resident of the Sheikh Radwan suburb of Gaza City, told Reuters that newly displaced families were setting up tents on the road after fleeing from areas north and east of the city and finding no other space.

“We don’t sleep because of the sounds of explosions from tanks and planes. The occupation is destroying homes east of Gaza, in Jabaliya and other places around us,” he said via a text message, asking that his surname be withheld for his security.
