Palestinians in Gaza call for their own ceasefire

With the war between Israel and Iran coming to a close, Palestinians in Gaza are calling on the international community to end the Israeli assault against them, which human rights groups have described as a genocide.

US Jewish group calls for ending Gaza war after Israel-Iran ceasefire

IfNotNow, a youth-led progressive Jewish group in the US, has welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Iran and mourned Palestinians, Iranians and Israelis killed during the “reckless war”.

“Right now, the Israeli military continues to massacre and starve Palestinians in Gaza,” IfNotNow said in a statement. “We need a ceasefire there now to end Israel’s genocidal assault and return the remaining living hostages.”

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed more than 56,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

‘Put a stop to this carnage’: UN denounces Israel’s war on Gaza

Dujarric added: “It is high time that leaders on both sides find the political courage to put a stop to this carnage.”

GCC calls for ceasefire in Gaza, denounces Iranian attack in Qatar

The Gulf Cooperation Council has condemned the Iranian attack on the Al Udeid Air Base hosting US forces in Qatar, calling it a “dangerous” violation of the UN Charter and principles of good neighbourly relations, “no matter the excuses”.

The bloc also renewed its calls for ending the Israeli assault on Gaza, saying Israel is killing civilians and preventing international agencies from delivering aid to people in the Palestinian territory.

“The council lauds the success of US President Donald Trump in securing a ceasefire between Iran and Israel and urges his excellency to exert efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” the GCC said in a statement.

US Arab advocate urges Trump to tell ‘Israelis to end genocide in Gaza’

Highlighting Donald Trump’s call for Israel to stop bombing Iran after the ceasefire came into effect, James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, has urged the US president to pressure the Israeli government to stop the war on Gaza.

After Trump’s public warnings to Israel against carrying out strikes in Tehran, Israel only launched a minor attack, allowing the ceasefire to take hold.

“President Trump: If this really happened as you said it did, then why not use your power to tell the Israelis to end the genocide in Gaza & their intensified oppression of Palestinians in the West Bank?” Zogby asked in a social media post.

“Just tell Israel to stop, turn around, & leave. Go for it!”

Israel says it will demolish home of Palestinian attacker

The Israeli military has announced plans to destroy the home of Abdul Rahim al-Haimoni in Hebron in the occupied West Bank. The army accused al-Haimoni of carrying out a deadly shooting attack in Tel Aviv in October of last year.

Rights groups have long criticised Israel’s policy of demolishing the family homes of Palestinian attackers as a form of collective punishment.

Main events on June 24th

  • The ceasefire between Israel and Iran, announced by US President Donald Trump, appears to be holding, despite an Iranian missile attack and an Israeli assault on Tehran after the truce came into effect.
  • This comes after Trump publicly scolded both sides for violations using a televised expletive, and ordered Israel to end its bombing operations and bring its fighter jets home.
  • Both Israel and Iran have claimed victory, with Iranians holding celebrations in Tehran and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claiming a triumph that will stand for generations.
  • Israel says its military focus will now return to Gaza, as its forces killed at least 86 Palestinians on Tuesday. Some 56 of the victims were aid seekers.
  • US media is reporting that the US bombings of Iran’s nuclear sites did not completely destroy the facilities and only set the programme back by a few months. The White House says the assessment is “flat-out wrong”.
  • The Gulf Cooperation Council has condemned Iran’s attack on the Al Udeid Air Base hosting US forces in Qatar and renewed its calls for the end of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Israeli forces kill 21 Palestinians in Gaza

Medical sources in Gaza say Israeli forces have killed at least 21 Palestinians in the Strip since the early hours today.

Among them are children as well as eight people who were waiting for rations near a distribution point for the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Seven Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza fighting: Military

Israel’s military has released the names of six soldiers who were killed in Gaza and is withholding the name of a seventh soldier until his death has been notified to his family.

The seven were all killed on Tuesday in Gaza, according to the military, and ranged in age from 19 to 21 years old. Those identified were all members of Israel’s 605th Combat Engineering Battalion.

An eight soldier from the same unit was also severely wounded on Tuesday night in Gaza and has been medically evacuated to Israel, the military said.

Iran criticises NATO chief’s praise for US bombardment

Iran has sharply criticised NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte after he appeared to praise US strikes on Iranian territory, calling his comments an endorsement of “a criminal act of aggression”.

“It is disgraceful, despicable and irresponsible for #NATO’s SG to congratulate a ‘truly extraordinary’ criminal act of aggression against a sovereign state,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei wrote on X.

“Who endorses an injustice lacks integrity. Who supports a crime is regarded as complicit.”

His comments were in response to a text message of praise Rutte sent to US President Donald Trump on Tuesday after the US attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Turkiye’s leader says peace with Israel impossible over Gaza attack

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ruled out a “peaceful” relationship with Israel as long as the country continues its war on Gaza.

Speaking at the end of a NATO summit, Erdogan criticised Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza, saying organisations such as the Red Cross are being obstructed.

“Peace and harmony between us is not possible as long as they [Israel] continue in this manner,” Erdogan said. “Israel cannot ensure the safety of its own people by destabilising the region.”

Turkiye and Israel were once close allies, but ties have soured under Erdogan’s two-decade-long rule. He has denounced Israel’s treatment of Palestinians while Israel objects to his support for Hamas.

Majority of Israelis want deal with Hamas: Poll

Walla, an online media company owned by the Jerusalem Post, has conducted a poll that found 62 percent of Israelis want their government to reach a deal that would see the release of the remaining captives held in Gaza.

Support for the Iran ceasefire, however, is a different matter, with just 33 percent of Israelis polled in support. The majority, 52 percent, are against the deal.

Israel tops UN child rights blacklist for second consecutive year

Once again, Gaza is at the top of the UN’s children’s rights blacklist report and Israel is named on this “list of shame” of countries that perpetrate grave violations of children.

The UN has been producing this report for 20 years now, and Israel has fought to stay off of this and not be named for many years. And now, it’s been listed two years running.

There are a lot of violations cited in the report against Israel for violations against children. This can be attributed, of course, to Israel’s continued war on Gaza. But also beyond is its increased violence against children in the occupied West Bank.

‘UNRWA has become an objective of this war,’ says agency chief

The head of the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency says UNRWA is being deliberately targeted in a broader effort to erase Palestinians’ human rights. “UNRWA has become an objective of this war, which aims to strip Palestinians of their refugee status,” said Philippe Lazzarini, the agency’s commissioner-general.

“Despite the extraordinary adverse and hostile environment, further compounded by the implementation of anti-UNRWA Israeli legislation, our activities continue.”

Lazzarini praised the “courage and determination” of Palestinian staff, “despite arrests, intimidation and harassment”, saying they continue to deliver essential healthcare and education to refugees.

Israel banned UNRWA from operating on its territory earlier this year. The ban also impacted the agency’s work in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Lazzarini warned on Tuesday that UNRWA may soon be forced to make an “unprecedented decision” about its services as it faces a $200m funding shortfall.

Israeli forces wreck Palestinian home near Jerusalem with no warning: Report

Israeli forces have begun to tear down a home in the Palestinian town of Hizma, near Jerusalem, according to the Jerusalem governorate.

Footage shared by the governorate and verified by Al Jazeera shows an Israeli bulldozer tearing into the home’s walls. The governorate says the owner received no prior warning.

Israeli forces shoot, kill elderly woman in West Bank: Report

During a raid in Shu’fat Camp near Jerusalem early this morning, Israeli forces fired shots that hit a 66-year-old woman in the head, killing her, according to the Wafa news agency. Wafa named the woman as Zahia Judah al-Obaidi.

Israel’s Ynet News site reports that Israeli police have launched a probe into the incident.

Israeli forces kill child during raid on West Bank

During a raid on al-Yamoun, west of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, Israeli soldiers shot a 13-year-old Palestinian boy in the neck. The boy, Rayan Tamer Housheh, later died of his wounds.

3 Palestinians killed during settler attack in the occupied West Bank

At least three Palestinians have been killed and seven others injured in a settler attack on the town of Kafr Malik, northeast of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.

Dozens of Israeli settlers attacked the town, burning vehicles and homes as residents of neighbouring villages attempted to confront them, local sources said. Israeli troops provided protection for the settlers and fired live rounds.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said it treated wounded Palestinians who suffered gunshot wounds, with some in serious condition.

The occupied West Bank is home to more than three million Palestinians who live under Israeli military rule, with the Palestinian Authority governing in limited areas. Israel has so far built more than 100 settlements across the West Bank, which are home to about 500,000 settlers – Israeli citizens living illegally on private Palestinian land in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.

Nine Palestinians queueing for aid killed in central Gaza

Sources at al-Awda and Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospitals are reporting that nine Palestinians were killed and several injured while waiting for aid near the Netzarim junction in the central Gaza Strip, our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic said.

The killings are the latest in a wave of daily carnage near aid distribution points established late last month by the controversial Israeli- and United States-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNWRA) has labelled a “death trap”.

Aftermath of an overnight Israeli strike in Gaza City

Palestinians search for casualties at the site of an overnight Israeli strike in Gaza City

Casualties mount in Gaza City, Deir el-Balah and Nuseirat

This past hour, the Civil Defence agency recovered more bodies from a bombed house in the east of Gaza City, bringing the number of those killed there from three to eight. They are all from the same family – including grandparents, parents and children.

Earlier this morning, more people were also killed inside a home in Deir el-Balah. Five family members were killed instantly by a bomb dropped there. Three other family members were killed in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

When we talk about people killed in these areas, we should keep in mind the aftermath: forced displacement for surviving family members and an overwhelming situation inside health facilities where injured people are pouring in.
