Gaza is being ‘deliberately asphyxiated by Israeli forces’

Doctors Without Borders, known by its French acronym MSF, says Israel is allowing an insufficient amount of aid into Gaza as “a smokescreen to pretend” that its siege is over, while subjecting hospitals and clinics in the enclave to “intensive attacks”, and forcing them out of service.

“The Israeli authorities’ decision to allow a ridiculously inadequate amount of aid into Gaza after months of an air-tight siege signals their intention to avoid the accusation of starving people in Gaza, while in fact keeping them barely surviving,” said Pascale Coissard, MSF’s emergency coordinator in Khan Younis.

“This plan is a way to instrumentalise aid, making it a tool to further Israeli forces’ military objectives,” he said.

MSF said that at least 20 medical facilities in Gaza have been “damaged, or forced partially or completely out of service in the past week by advancing Israeli ground operations, intensified airstrikes, and widespread evacuation orders”.

It said its teams in Khan Younis reported hearing almost one Israeli strike per minute between 6am and 6.30am on May 19, including one that hit the Nasser Hospital. The strike was the third time that the hospital had been struck in two months, and it damaged medical stocks, it added.

Earlier, an MSF staff member in central Deir el-Balah told Al Jazeera that the group has yet to see any aid distributed from the first batch of nine trucks Israel cleared for entry on Monday.

Claire Manera also said she is seeing “women and children who look like they haven’t eaten for weeks”, and that malnourished people are flooding into clinics for help.

Ms Rachel implores world leaders to save babies in Gaza

Children’s educator and YouTube star Ms Rachel has issued an emotional plea to world leaders, urging them to act on the UN’s warning that thousands of babies could die in Gaza within the next 48 hours if Israel’s blockade continues.

“You can’t be about to let 14,000 children starve,” she said in a post on Instagram.

“Whatever is keeping you from standing up for these kids, who don’t have food and medical care and who have had amputations without anaesthesia, whatever is keeping you from saying it, it’s not greater than your humanity,” she said.

Ms Rachel, whose educational videos have had more than 10 billion views on YouTube, has continued to be outspoken on children in Gaza, despite facing backlash for her views.

Her real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso.

Netanyahu says Canada, U.K., France offering ‘huge prize’ to Hamas with Gaza letter

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/netanyahu-says-canada-u-k-france-offering-huge-prize-to-hamas-with-gaza-letter/article_68564a5e-9e60-5bf4-96cd-a44296fb71fc.html

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Canada, the United Kingdom and France of giving Hamas “a huge prize” by threatening to take action against Israel over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

...

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the Canadian government stance, saying in a social media post it is wrong to threaten sanctions against a country “while a terrorist group on their borders holds their citizens hostage.”

“When terrorist groups like Hamas say your actions are a ‘significant step in the right direction,’ that means they are not,” Poilievre said.

“This war can end tomorrow if Hamas hands over the remaining hostages, lays down their weapons and surrenders. Conservatives will always stand for Israel’s right to exist and to defend itself.”

That's an outright lie. It's not about the hostages nor Hamas, it's about numbers, population numbers that is and land grabs. Plus surrendering to occupation? Remember residential schools Pierre?

https://nctr.ca/education/teaching-resources/residential-school-history/

For a period of more than 150 years (see the Residential School Timeline) , First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation children were taken from their families and communities to attend schools which were often located far from their homes. More than 150,000 children attended Indian Residential Schools. Many never returned.

That's what colonization leads to.

The joint statement from Carney, Macron and Starmer came after Netanyahu said Monday that Israel plans on “taking control of all of Gaza” and will encourage what he described as voluntary emigration to other countries — a proposal the Palestinians have rejected.

The hostages and Hamas are just an excuse for the real goal, ethnic cleansing.

Australia urged to impose sanctions on Ben-Gvir, Smotrich

The Australian Centre for International Justice (ACIJ) is calling on the Australian government to impose sanctions on the far-right Israeli cabinet ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

Rawan Arraf, ACIJ’s executive director, said that a recent joint statement from Canada, France and the UK shows that “it’s not too late” for Australia “to take concrete actions” over Israeli human rights violations, including through sanctions and an arms embargo.

“If Australia were to take its obligations seriously it would open criminal investigations into Smotrich’s alarming remarks on annihilating the Gaza Strip,” said Arraf.

“Sanctions are a bare minimum opportunity to deter and punish such severe violations,” she said.

Australia should also impose a “two-way arms embargo on Israel,” she added.

“Ongoing military trade and cooperation only serve to reinforce Israel’s unlawful occupation and empower its military apparatus.”

Australia’s foreign minister decries ‘horrifying’ reports of babies starving in Gaza

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has released a statement saying “the Israeli Government cannot allow the suffering to continue” after the UN’s aid chief said thousands of babies are at risk of dying if they do not receive food imminently.

“Australia joins international partners in calling on Israel to allow a full and immediate resumption of aid to Gaza,” Wong said in a post on X. “We condemn the abhorrent and outrageous comments made by members of the Netanyahu Government about these people in crisis.”

Wong stopped short of outlining any measures Australia might take to encourage Israel to ensure enough aid reaches those in need, as the UK, France and Canada said they would do, in a recent joint statement.

Cambridge college to divest from arms companies after pro-Palestine protests

King’s College at the University of Cambridge says it has decided to divest from companies that produce military and nuclear weapons, as well as those involved in illegal activities, such as occupation.

The move comes after students at the college staged protests, including setting up a protest camp, urging the institution to cut ties with groups that are “complicit in Israel’s genocide” in Gaza.

In a statement, the college said its new policy is the culmination of many months of work and wide-ranging discussions about the relationship between its investments and its values, prompted by the occupation of Ukraine and Palestinian territory.

It also noted that, in the past, it committed to removing all exposure to fossil fuel investments by 2030.

Corbyn calls for independent inquiry into UK’s role in Israel’s war on Gaza

Former Labour leader and British MP Jeremy Corbyn has announced he will introduce a bill calling for an independent public inquiry into the UK’s involvement in Israel’s war on Gaza.

“The government must decide: will it support this inquiry, or will it block our efforts to establish the truth?” Corbyn posted on X.

The move comes one day after the Labour-led UK government suspended trade talks with Israel over the deteriorating conditions in Gaza amid Israel’s 11-week blockade of the territory, preventing much-needed aid from getting in.

Italy urges Israel to halt Gaza attacks, open crossings for humanitarian aid

Italy has renewed its call for Israel to stop attacks on Gaza and allow humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian enclave.

“I once again called on Israel to halt military operations involving civilians and to immediately open all crossings to allow humanitarian aid to enter,” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani posted on X. “We want a ceasefire and the release of the hostages: the war in Gaza must end.”

Tajani also announced that 52 Palestinians, relatives of those who were evacuated from Gaza to Italy for medical treatment, were transferred to Jordan, adding they would eventually be brought to Italy.

Pope urges Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza

The newly selected head of the Catholic Church called the situation in the Palestinian enclave “yet more worrying and saddening”.

“I renew my appeal… to allow for the entry of fair humanitarian help and to bring to an end the hostilities, the high price of which is paid by children, the elderly and the sick,” the pope said during his weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square.

French Foreign Ministry says considering expanding sanctions on Israel

A French Foreign Ministry spokesperson has condemned Israel’s expanding military operation in Gaza as “horrific” and repeated warnings of potential sanctions as a result.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, the official said France is looking into a range of options to pressure Israel to halt its operations in Gaza and allow sufficient aid into the enclave. It also stressed the need for a two-state solution that takes both Israeli and Palestinian interests into account.

The remarks follow a joint statement by the leaders of France, the UK and Canada on Monday threatening sanctions against Israel.

Spain’s Catalonia region closes trade office in Tel Aviv

The government of the Spanish region of Catalonia has announced it will be shutting down its trade and investment office in Tel Aviv in response to Israel’s renewed offensive on Gaza.

The office, opened 10 years ago, will cease operations immediately and is expected to be nonoperational by the end of the day, the government said in a statement.

The move is largely symbolic since the office suspended all promotional and business missions in the region after attacks on Gaza began. It had continued to function in a limited capacity without any political representation.

‘Barbaric’: Ireland’s Harris slams Israel’s actions in Gaza

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris delivered a powerful statement in parliament earlier today, sharply criticising Israel’s actions in Gaza.

  • Harris called Israel’s actions in Gaza “barbaric” and a violation of human dignity.
  • He said Israel is targeting medics, journalists and children, calling the situation “difficult to witness day and night”.
  • He described Israel’s blockade of aid as a “blatant violation of international law”.
  • He warned that up to 15,000 children could die in Gaza if conditions persist.
  • He condemned Israeli practices in the occupied West Bank as well.
  • He reiterated Ireland’s support for a two-state solution.
  • He announced plans to pursue legislation to ban products from Israeli settlements.

Mixed reaction in the West Bank as UK sanctions Israeli settlers

We’ve been speaking to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on the UK’s decision to impose sanctions against Israeli settlers in the territory, as well as its move to suspend trade talks with Israel over its war on Gaza.

“This is a serious and tangible change in the British position. We hope that this would be the start of more steps towards imposing sanctions on the state of Israel,” one man told Al Jazeera on video.

“We are already witnessing changes worldwide: in the Netherlands, Norway and others. We hope that these positions gain momentum worldwide and lead towards a boycott of Israel as a protest from its genocide and occupation,” he added.

Another man said that the UK helped create Israel, “so it won’t abandon it in one day”.

“We haven’t seen serious actions by the UK despite all the massacres. We feel that we’ve been left alone by our own people: the Arabs. So I am not holding my breath that the UK will help us.”

A third person said the decision is for “media consumption”. “But they need to stop the war. The Arabs also: They need to threaten military action. Otherwise, it’s all talk. We feel abandoned,” he added.

UN experts slam Israeli attacks on schools in Gaza, East Jerusalem

A group of 22 human rights experts have denounced Israel’s deadly assault on a UNRWA-run school-turned-shelter in the Gaza Strip on May 7, as well as its forcible closure of all six schools run by the agency in occupied East Jerusalem on May 8.

The experts said, “Attacks on schools are an assault on children.”

They are “also an assault on the right to safe education and a blatant violation of international law, all the more in the context of an unlawful occupation,” the experts added.

The attack on the UNRWA-run school in Gaza involved two strikes on a building that was sheltering 2,000 displaced Palestinians. At least 30 civilians, including women and children, were killed.

In the attacks on occupied East Jerusalem, heavily armed Israeli forces stormed three UNRWA schools in the Shu’fat refugee camp while classes were in session, violently evicting more than 550 Palestinian children, some as young as six, from their classrooms, the experts said. “By the end of the day, all six UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem had been evacuated,” they said.

“Israel has no authority to carry out these actions, when the International Court of Justice has determined that Israel is under an obligation to dismantle its occupation.”

‘We can’t bear what’s happening’

Palestinians in Gaza say they are desperate and the amount of aid Israel has promised to let in is not enough.

“Even the amount of aid they are speaking about and we hear of is not enough for anyone. It’s not enough for even one group of people. People would fight over it, even if it comes, people would fight over it,” an elderly woman in Gaza City said.

“We can’t bear what’s happening. We’re fed up. We want to go back to our cities, our homes and our lives. We want life to be back to normal as it was before.”

A Palestinian man in Gaza City said Israel is trying to deceive the world by saying aid trucks are entering Gaza.

“This is not useful for the people inside,” he said. “The displaced people in these areas all need food and have malnutrition. When we take children to the hospitals, doctors always say that this person has malnutrition and that vitamins, food and water are needed.”

Video shows supplies for Gaza held up due to Israeli blockade

UNRWA spokesperson Louise Wateridge says the agency has enough food in one of its warehouses in Jordan to feed “200,000 people alone for an entire month”.

“It’s been sitting here for weeks on end, ready to enter the Gaza Strip,” Wateridge said in a video taken at the warehouse, just a few hours’ drive from Gaza.

“Just this morning, I received footage from my colleagues in Gaza. They have absolutely nothing left. And yet, here, just a few hours away, there’s everything,” she said, adding that the supplies include food and medicine.

“We need this aid to enter now. It has to go to people who are desperate,” she added.

Israel’s approval of minimal aid serving as ‘smokescreen’

The few aid trucks let into Gaza are nowhere near sufficient to meet Gaza’s vast needs and instead serve as a “a smokescreen” for Israel to “pretend the siege is over”, according to medical charity Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF.

As we’ve been reporting, Israel has approved the entry of 100 aid trucks to cross into the enclave, but the UN says no aid has actually been distributed there yet due to Israeli restrictions.

Aid trucks still held up at border

The Israeli army, after three months of devastating blockade, has allowed 100 humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza.

But what we mean here by allowed is that the trucks have received military clearance to access the Palestinian side. They have not made their journey into the enclave. They are still stuck at the border crossing. Only five trucks have made it in.

This could be another sign of the systematic obstruction of aid in Gaza. Many critics say Israel is delaying the entry of aid trucks until the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation – an Israel-backed organisation to distribute aid – will start operating in Gaza, expected at the end of this month. Others say the Israeli government is profoundly divided over aid distribution.

Two killed in Nuseirat, today's death toll reaches 42

An Israeli attack has killed at least two people in central Gaza’s Nuseirat camp, report our colleagues on the ground. The casualties bring the total number of people killed in the enclave today to 42.

Doctors forced to reuse tools at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital

I’m at one of Gaza’s few functioning hospitals [Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital].

It is struggling to keep its doors open amid devastating medical shortages. Doctors here have started to reuse basic tools and are treating shrapnel wounds and burns with the most limited resources.

Medical teams are exhausted, as the hospital continues to receive many casualties daily. Many wounded people are lying in the hospital’s crowded hallways, without beds.

Medical teams in southern Gaza hospital struggle amid dwindling supplies

Ahmed al-Farra, director of paediatrics and obstetrics at al-Tahreer Maternity Hospital, part of the Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza, says medical teams are facing dire conditions after repeated Israeli strikes forced the evacuation of patients from the European Hospital, also in southern Gaza.

“Nasser Medical Complex is very, very crowded, as the European Hospital is completely destroyed, and no one can be treated there,” he told Al Jazeera. “But we have to continue. We are obligated to continue. This is our duty.”

Treating critical patients, especially children, as resources dwindle has become increasingly challenging, he said.

“No medical supplies arrived at the hospital … Gaza needs nearly 500 trucks every day to solve the problem. We are talking about a lot of diseases due to severe malnutrition, because of lack of food, lack of milk, lack of medical supplies,” al-Farra stressed, adding that the situation was unsustainable and deadly for children in Gaza.

Doctors forced to prioritise amid Israeli attacks, blockade

Speaking from Nasser Hospital, Palestinian physician Ahmed al-Farra says medical staff at the health facility are consistently forced to choose which patient’s life to prioritise amid the ongoing Israeli attacks and lack of resources.

“My doctor in the paediatric ICU asked me what to do in this situation. I told her, please try to prioritise those with the best chance of survival,” he noted. “If someone can survive, we try to help them. For others, we simply can’t do anything.”

Al-Farra also condemned the use of hunger as the “worst weapon” against Palestinians. “When we are talking about malnutrition, we are talking about shutdown of the body’s mechanisms. Children will be unable to survive.”

Eight killed in Gaza City

An Israeli air attack has hit a parking area in Gaza City’s Jabalia neighbourhood, killing at least eight people, according to a Health Ministry update cited by our colleagues on the ground. Dozens more people are wounded.
