One killed, five wounded in Israeli drone attack on al-Mawasi

Our colleagues on the ground are reporting at least one person was killed and five others wounded in an Israeli drone strike on a tent in the al-Mawasi camp in southern Gaza.

The camp, previously designed as a “safe zone” by the Israelis and home to hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians, has come under repeated attack in recent days. Dozens have been killed.

Teacher says children in Gaza face ‘dangerous, harsh situation’

Tarek al-Farra, an English teacher in Khan Younis, says children in Gaza are desperate to attend classes despite Israel’s relentless destruction of Gaza.

“The situation here is very dangerous for us as teachers and for the students,” he told Al Jazeera. “But there are still many students who keep coming to class even under dangerous and harsh situations. They want to show that education means something for them.”

“Education is a symbol of resilience and hope for the students,” he added.

Since Israel’s war began in October 2023, Israeli forces have destroyed nearly all of Gaza’s schools, affecting the education of some 660,000 children.

60,000 Gaza children show signs of malnutrition

Tens of thousands of children are now showing symptoms of malnutrition as Israel has been blocking food and medical supplies from entering the enclave for nearly two months, Gaza Health Ministry spokesperson Khalil Deqran has said.

Since March 2, the Israeli military has imposed the blockade on the Strip, insisting it is a tool to pressure Hamas into releasing all the remaining captives. It also resumed its offensive on Gaza on March 18.

Since the blockade began, all 25 UN-supplied bakeries making bread have been shut, with aid agencies warning that the population is on the precipice of starvation and mass disease.

Israeli attack on children’s hospital causes ‘significant damage’

We have more on the Israeli attack on the Moh El Dorra Pediatric Hospital in Gaza City overnight. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza says the bombing caused “significant damage” to the hospital’s intensive care unit as well as its solar panel system.

The ministry condemned the attack, called for global action and said, “The occupation does not stop at preventing medicine and food from reaching the children of Gaza, and is also depriving them of life.”

Sirens blare in Israel as military intercepts missile from Yemen

The Israeli military says a missile fired from Yemen has set off air raid sirens in northern Israel, including Haifa, Kiryat Ata and the Western Galilee.

It said it activated air defences and that the missile was “apparently successfully intercepted”.

The Houthi rebels, who control most of Yemen, have claimed several missile attacks on Israel, including on the main Ben Gurion international airport, in a campaign it says is in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

US forces continue to bomb Yemen

The Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV is reporting more US raids on Yemen.

It said there were three attacks on the central province of Marib and four in the southwestern province of Taiz targeting the communications network in the al-Barh area of Maqbanah district. Earlier in the morning, the channel reported four raids on the international airport in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah and four on the northern Saada province.

The US launched the bombing campaign in Yemen on March 16 after the Houthis, who control most of the impoverished country, threatened to resume attacks on Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea. The US attacks have killed hundreds of Yemenis, including women and children.

Houthis claim attack on Israel

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Yemeni rebel group says that its fighters launched a ballistic missile and a drone at the areas of Haifa and Jaffa in Israel.

“We will not back down from our duties to support the Palestinians until the aggression on Gaza stops and the siege is lifted,” the Houthi spokesperson said.

Israeli drone returns to the skies of Beirut

The threatening buzz of an Israeli surveillance drone could be heard by residents of the Lebanese capital this morning.

Israeli drones have made several appearances over Beirut in the past week, and yesterday, a drone attack killed a member of al-Jamaa al-Islamiya’s armed wing in Baawerta, about 20km (12.5 miles) south of Beirut.

Israeli forces arrest 16 Palestinians in occupied West Bank

Al Jazeera Arabic is reporting that Israeli forces rounded up 16 people following a raid in the village of Kobar, north of Ramallah.

Those arrested include former prisoner Hanan Barghouti.

The 59-year-old is the sister of the longest-held Palestinian prisoner, Nael Barghouti, who was released after 44 years in an Israeli jail and exiled to Egypt in February. She spent nine months in administrative detention, without any charges, last year.

Israeli forces also reportedly carried out arrests in ad-Dhahiriya, south of Hebron.

Israeli army levels Palestinian land in northern occupied West Bank: Report

Wafa news agency reports that Israeli bulldozers were razing land belonging to Palestinians earlier this morning between the towns of Kifl Haris and Haris, northwest of Salfit in the occupied West Bank.

The report cited Omar Samara, a local authority figure, who said that Israeli troops started levelling large areas of agricultural land owned by residents of Haris, intending to annexe more land for illegal settlements in the area.

Israeli authorities have been stepping up land-grabbing operations, land destruction and house demolition across the Palestinian territory since the establishment of Israel’s government, the most right wing in its history, which counts settlers themselves among its ministers.

In 2024, Israel illegally claimed 24.7sq km (9.54sq miles) of Palestinian land, exceeding the total land seized over the past 20 years combined.

Israeli forces conduct large-scale arrest campaign in occupied West Bank

At least 50 Palestinians, including minors, women and previously released prisoners, have been detained by Israeli forces in the past 24 hours, our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report.

Sources told Al Jazeera the arrest campaign was concentrated in the town of Kobar, north of Ramallah, where at least 24 people were arrested. Approximately 16 of these were identified, including former prisoner Hanan Barghouti and other former prisoners.

The home of Nael Barghouti – the longest-serving Palestinian inmate in an Israeli prison, who was released in late February and deported to Egypt – was turned into military barracks and an interrogation centre for dozens of Palestinians, they said.

Israeli forces also stormed the city of ad-Dhahiriya, south of Hebron, at dawn today, searching Palestinian homes and arresting 10 Palestinians, including three members of the municipal council.

Among other locations, arrests took place in the cities of Azzun and Bethlehem, and the town of Beit Furik, east of Nablus. As of April this year, Israel had imprisoned about 9,792 Palestinians, 3,498 of whom are detained without charges.

Qatar wants to reach a ‘full deal to end the war’ on Gaza

As we’ve been reporting, Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani says his country is still working with mediators to reach an end to the war on Gaza.

Hamas delegation heads to Cairo for truce talks: Reports

The Reuters and AFP news agencies are reporting that a Hamas delegation is heading to the Egyptian capital, Cairo, for a new round of discussions aimed at securing the release of captives and ending Israel’s war on Gaza.

The truce effort has been deadlocked, with Hamas insisting on a permanent ceasefire. Israel has so far only offered temporary truces and wants Hamas to disarm, something the group rejects.

According to Reuters, two sources familiar with the mediation effort said the delegation would discuss a new offer which would include a truce for five to seven years following the release of all captives and an end to fighting. The sources told the agency that Israel had yet to respond to a revamped long-term truce proposal.

Meanwhile, AFP quoted a Hamas official as saying that the delegation, led by the chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, “will meet with Egyptian officials to discuss new ideas aimed at reaching a ceasefire”.

The group is yet to comment publicly on the reports.

Germany, France, UK say Israel legally obligated to allow aid into Gaza

The foreign ministers of Germany, France and the UK have jointly called on Israel to adhere to international law by allowing the unhindered passage of humanitarian aid into Gaza, in a statement released today.

“Humanitarian aid must never be used as a political tool and Palestinian territory must not be reduced nor subjected to any demographic change,” the ministers said.

Israel has enforced a total blockade on Gaza since March 2, refusing to allow the passage of any supplies, including food, medicine, fuel and commercial goods, into the Gaza Strip. It has explicitly said it is using the denial of life-sustaining materials to pressure Hamas into accepting its terms for a deal to release the remaining Israeli captives in Gaza.

Israel cabinet meeting erupts into heated debate over Gaza aid distribution: Report

According to Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan, sharp words were exchanged between far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Defence Minister Israel Katz, military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.

At the meeting, Katz had proposed that the distribution of aid in Gaza would be carried out by either the Israeli army or by American soldiers, adding that previous methods of distribution only strengthened Hamas.

The military’s Zamir, however, objected, saying the soldiers “will not distribute humanitarian aid, and we will not starve the Gaza Strip”, to which Smotrich reportedly replied that the military “doesn’t choose its own missions”.

“If you’re saying you’re incapable of appointing someone, then you can be replaced,” Smotrich was quoted as saying.

At one point during the cabinet meeting, Smotrich also walked out while Shin Bet’s Bar was speaking. Bar is currently entangled in a political feud with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had ordered his dismissal. The order, however, was temporarily halted by the court.

Smotrich had refused to attend an earlier cabinet meeting, saying that he would not be involved in a discussion with Bar present, saying the latter had been fired from the government.

Of course Zamir doesn't want their soldiers to distribute aid. He doesn't want his soldiers to see Palestinians as human.

Getting up close to 2 million people suffering from starvation, half of them children, many disfigured from 15 months of relentless bombing, will only strengthen the opposition to further military actions. Keep them operating drones and fire shells / bombs from a distance instead of seeing the aftermath.

Lapid says Israeli government incapable of ‘winning’ war in Gaza

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has issued a sharp condemnation of the Netanyahu-led government’s handling of the ongoing war.

“It’s time to recognize the facts: this government is incapable of winning the war,” Lapid said in a post on X. “They had a year and a half, received full support from the Americans, full support from the opposition, and the excuses are over.”

Gaza Civil Defence unable to recover victims after Israel destroyed rescue machinery

The Gaza Strip is witnessing more Israeli escalation. In fact, this has been ongoing since dawn today as Palestinian towns and villages have come under very extensive Israeli bombardment.

The concentration has been on targeting civilian gatherings. Elsewhere, it’s pretty much focused on targeting schools and residential homes.

There are growing challenges faced by Gaza’s civil defence crews in order to deal with these attacks and recover victims from underneath the areas that have been widely destroyed.

This is due to chronic shortages of civil equipment and the destruction of heavy machinery that has been destroyed in the latest Israeli barrage of attacks on the Strip.

All calculated by Israel. The official death toll only counts bodies that get delivered at hospitals. Since Israel ran out of hospitals and ambulances to bomb while new 'collection points' keep popping up with field hospitals, destroy the rescue equipment instead. Bodies that remain under the rubble can't be counted...

Gaza’s children at ‘most severe stages of malnutrition’: Hospital director

That warning was issued by Dr Ahmed al-Farra, director of the al-Tahrir Hospital in the Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza, who said medical treatment of children in Gaza “experiencing the most severe stages of malnutrition” is hampered by a shortage of medicine and infant formula.

A Gaza Health Ministry statement on the hospital director’s warning also featured photographs of an emaciated Palestinian child, Osama al-Raqab, who the ministry said “epitomises the suffering of children in Gaza due to the lack of proper nutrition and drinking water”.

“The Gaza Strip is experiencing stage five of malnutrition, the most severe stage according to the World Health Organization,” the ministry said. “The lack of adequate nutrition and medications for pregnant mothers seriously impacts newborns, especially premature babies,” it said.

Israel’s “continued blockade of food and medicine supplies indicates that children in the Gaza Strip are facing a dangerous and catastrophic situation”, the ministry added.

Israeli military escalation as Gaza’s humanitarian crisis reaches ‘catastrophic proportions’

The Gaza Strip is witnessing a clear military escalation and a soaring humanitarian crisis that has resulted from Israel’s ongoing ban on all sorts of humanitarian aid to the Strip.

The United Nations has stated that the Gaza Strip has been witnessing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis since October 2023. And now, especially, after more than 50 days with no food [or] water, no medical supplies entering the territory, raising serious alarms about the serious repercussions that will emerge in light of the high rates of malnutrition among children.

[There are] ongoing calls by European leaders and international actors to allow aid access for the Strip, in order to alleviate this aggravating crisis with its catastrophic proportions.

Journalist among those killed by recent Israeli strikes

As we have been reporting, the Israeli military has carried out a series of deadly attacks across the Gaza Strip over recent hours, striking schools serving as shelters and tents housing displaced Palestinians.

Citing medical sources in Gaza, our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues now report that among those killed is Al-Aqsa Radio journalist Saeed Abu Hassanein.

The reporter was killed along with his wife and daughter after their tent was bombed in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza.

At least 6 dead after Israeli military bombs home in Gaza City

Israeli fighter jets have bombed a home north of Gaza City, killing at least six people, an Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent reports. A woman and four children were killed in the attack, which struck the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, the correspondent reports.

Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip have now killed at least 45 people since dawn on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera correspondents.

Woman killed, several wounded in Khan Younis; two killed in central Gaza

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report that the woman was killed in an Israeli strike on the al-Attar area located west of Khan Younis in Gaza’s south. Women and children were among several others wounded, Al Jazeera Arabic reports.

Local Palestinian media also report that two people were killed and several were injured in an Israeli attack on a tent shelter belonging to the Farajallah family in the as-Sawarha area, west of Nuseirat in central Gaza.

There are also reports of heavy artillery shelling in the north of Gaza.

Israeli army shoots two during Tubas raid, settlers wound five in Jordan Valley

Israeli forces have opened fire during a raid on the occupied West Bank town of Ein al-Beida in Tubas governorate, wounding two people, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.

Israeli settlers have also shot and wounded five Palestinians in a separate incident in the village of Bardala in the northern Jordan Valley, local sources have told Al Jazeera Arabic.

West Bank funeral held for 12-year-old shot dead by Israeli military

A funeral procession set off on Wednesday evening from the Jenin government hospital heading towards the occupied West Bank town of al-Yamoun, where Israeli forces shot Mahmoud Abu al-Haija, the Wafa news agency reports.

The 12-year-old boy was standing in the street with a group of children earlier on Wednesday when Israeli forces opened fire and fatally wounded him in the thigh and abdomen, according to Wafa.

Israeli settlers torch Palestinian homes, land in second attack on village in one week

Israeli human rights group Yesh Din has shared photos and a video clip of Israeli settlers attacking and burning Palestinian homes and agricultural trees in the village of Sinjil, located in the northeast of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Yesh Din, which works on rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territory, said settlers have attacked the village twice – so far – this week.

Israeli forces also assisted an earlier attack by firing tear gas canisters at locals trying to put out the fires started by the settlers, the rights group said, adding that one resident of the village was killed.

“The military enables this and prevents emergency services from accessing the area,” Yesh Din said, adding the violence corresponds with the establishment of a new settler “farm outpost” near the Palestinian village.

Israeli forces carry out raids, arrests in the occupied West Bank

We reported a little earlier that Israeli forces are demolishing a Palestinian home in Zaatar village, east of Bethlehem. Israeli military operations are reported to be ongoing elsewhere in the occupied West Bank, including:

  • A Palestinian was arrested in Husan town, west of Bethlehem.
  • Israeli forces arrested a second Palestinian at the iron gates installed at the entrance to Khirbet Qalqas, south of Hebron city.
  • A raid has also taken place on the town of Qusra, south of Nablus.
  • Several houses were searched during a military raid on the Qalandiya refugee camp, north of Jerusalem.
  • Troops have also descended on Turmus Aya town, north of Ramallah, and a checkpoint has been set up on the road leading to Hizma village, located to the north of occupied East Jerusalem.

Chilling video said to show Israel’s systematic destruction of Gaza refugee camp

The Palestinian Authority’s government communication centre has shared a chilling video clip of the Israeli military’s systematic destruction of Palestinian homes and property in Gaza.

“No pause. No mercy. No humanity,” the PA’s communication centre says in a post with video footage shot from a moving Israeli tank inside what is said to be the remains of Shaboura refugee camp in southern Gaza.

“In Shaboura refugee camp, as in every other corner in Gaza, the devastation never ends,” the centre said.

ICJ to hold hearings on Israel’s UNRWA ban, restrictions on Gaza aid

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has published an itinerary for public hearings it will hold in The Hague next week to discuss Israel’s legal obligations around allowing UN, NGO and neutral state activity in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The UN has asked the ICJ to provide a legal opinion on Israel’s right to limit or bar UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) operations, as well as Israel’s weeks-long ban on humanitarian aid entering Gaza.

Some 45 countries and international organisations have submitted written statements before the hearings, which will start on April 28.

Israeli representatives are not expected to attend, but Israel’s Foreign Ministry has said it will submit a written statement to the court.
