Qatar wants to reach a ‘full deal to end the war’ on Gaza

As we’ve been reporting, Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani says his country is still working with mediators to reach an end to the war on Gaza.

Hamas delegation heads to Cairo for truce talks: Reports

The Reuters and AFP news agencies are reporting that a Hamas delegation is heading to the Egyptian capital, Cairo, for a new round of discussions aimed at securing the release of captives and ending Israel’s war on Gaza.

The truce effort has been deadlocked, with Hamas insisting on a permanent ceasefire. Israel has so far only offered temporary truces and wants Hamas to disarm, something the group rejects.

According to Reuters, two sources familiar with the mediation effort said the delegation would discuss a new offer which would include a truce for five to seven years following the release of all captives and an end to fighting. The sources told the agency that Israel had yet to respond to a revamped long-term truce proposal.

Meanwhile, AFP quoted a Hamas official as saying that the delegation, led by the chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, “will meet with Egyptian officials to discuss new ideas aimed at reaching a ceasefire”.

The group is yet to comment publicly on the reports.

Germany, France, UK say Israel legally obligated to allow aid into Gaza

The foreign ministers of Germany, France and the UK have jointly called on Israel to adhere to international law by allowing the unhindered passage of humanitarian aid into Gaza, in a statement released today.

“Humanitarian aid must never be used as a political tool and Palestinian territory must not be reduced nor subjected to any demographic change,” the ministers said.

Israel has enforced a total blockade on Gaza since March 2, refusing to allow the passage of any supplies, including food, medicine, fuel and commercial goods, into the Gaza Strip. It has explicitly said it is using the denial of life-sustaining materials to pressure Hamas into accepting its terms for a deal to release the remaining Israeli captives in Gaza.
