Pro-Palestinian protester group sprays London weapon manufacturer’s building red

The UK-based Palestine Action group of protesters has sprayed the London headquarters of the Leonardo company for manufacturing weapons used by Israel. “Leonardo supply the Israeli military with Apache fighter jets and parts for their F-35 stealth bombers,” the group said.

Palestine Action had on Friday sprayed and slashed a historical painting of Arthur Balfour, the British lord who as foreign minister signed the 1917 declaration of support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Palestinian city of Jericho names street after Aaron Bushnell

The occupied West Bank city has named a street after the US airman who set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington to protest against the war in Gaza, UK newspaper The Guardian reports. The Guardian quotes the mayor of Jericho, Abdul Karim Sidr, as saying that 25-year-old Aaron Bushnell, who died on February 25, “sacrificed everything” for Palestinians.

“We didn’t know him, and he didn’t know us. There were no social, economic or political ties between us. What we share is a love for freedom and a desire to stand against these attacks [on Gaza],” the mayor said as he unveiled the street sign with a small crowd.

Activists create massive pro-Palestine sign in San Francisco

Photographer Chris Mowgli, who goes by @modern_Mowgli on Instagram, has uploaded footage of a giant sign calling for an end to US foreign aid for Israel. According to the photographer, the action was taken by an anonymous group of activists.

The banner was visible to “thousands” of residents of the California city, as well as many taking off from San Francisco’s airport, the post claims.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has so far twice bypassed Congress to urgently send bombs and other munitions to Israel amid the war that has killed more than 31,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, and left tens of thousands more injured or missing.

Netanyahu orders prison preparations for ‘thousands’ of new arrests

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered his defence, national security and finance ministers to open up space in Israeli prisons in preparation for the arrests of “thousands” more Palestinians this year. T

he office of the prime minister said in a statement that the military and internal security agency Shin Bet have assessed that many more “terrorists” will be arrested in Gaza and Israel will run out of prison space if it doesn’t do something now.

Approximately 4,000 Palestinians have already been arrested since the October start of the war – mostly in Gaza – it said, prompting this “urgent” need for preparations. Israel holds thousands of Palestinians in administrative detention without judicial due process, and the United Nations and others have documented numerous instances of torture in Israeli prisons.

Israel taking captives’ families to UNSC meeting on October 7 attacks

A delegation led by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz to New York City will include “dozens” of family members of captives held in Gaza with a mission to get the United Nations to declare Hamas a “terrorist” organisation.

The delegation is departing for the US today, and will take part in Monday’s session of the UN Security Council that is being held at the request of the US, UK and France to discuss a UN review on sexual violence on October 7. The delegation met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before leaving Israel.

“The hostages’ families will stand beside me in order to remind the UN secretary-general and the entire world: The people of Israel will not tolerate what happened and will not relent until the UN declares Hamas a terrorist organisation,” Katz said.

Tell your MP: Vote for the NDP Motion on Palestine!

On March 18, Parliament will finally be voting on an important motion in support of Palestine. This the first opportunity since Oct. 7 that MPs will be asked to vote individually on questions related to Israel’s genocide in Gaza, so this is extremely significant.

The motion, introduced by the NDP, includes important proposals on how to respond to Israel’s current genocidal war on Gaza and the catastrophic humanitarian crisis that has ensued. These include an immediate ceasefire, an arms embargo, the resumption of aid funding for UNRWA, and more – items that CJPME and others have advocated for months. Please join CJPME in demanding that all MPs vote in support of the NDP motion on March 18.

Exhausted medical personnel starving in northern Gaza

The Ministry of Health in Gaza says exhausted medical personnel in the northern Strip continue to work around the clock but are under immense physical pressure as there is nothing to eat. More than 2,000 medical personnel working in northern Gaza will begin their Ramadan without having anything to eat for suhoor or iftar, it said.

“We call on international and relief institutions to provide ready-made meals to enable medical teams to carry out their work.”

Euro-Med Monitor: Gaza’s elderly dying at rapid rates

The Geneva-based Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor says as Israel continues to commit genocide in the Gaza Strip, the enclave’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The main causes are bombing, starvation, dehydration, malnutrition and lack of access to medical care.

The organisation said in a statement on Sunday that its team on the ground in Gaza “is recording nearly daily deaths among the elderly due to Israel’s systematic and pervasive crimes of starvation and treatment deprivation in the Gaza Strip, especially in Gaza City and the Strip’s northern regions”.

“The majority of these cases do not reach hospitals, which are only partially operational in northern Gaza because of the difficulty of access given the ongoing Israeli military attacks. Consequently, after dying at home, the elderly are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries.”

Israel claims 225 aid trucks sent to Gaza Strip today

Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) office says that 225 trucks carrying humanitarian aid were “inspected and transferred to Gaza today”. It said 134 of the trucks carried food, with the rest carrying water, medical supplies and shelter equipment.

“There is no limit to the amount of aid that can enter Gaza,” the organisation continues to claim despite condemnations by the UN and allies that Israel is not letting enough aid in. COGAT had said earlier that 120 aid trucks were coordinated to northern Gaza over the last week, where Israel has blocked most aid since the start of its war on Gaza.

A recent report by the humanitarian group Refugees International says that Israel has generated “famine-like conditions” in the Gaza Strip “while obstructing and undermining the humanitarian response”.

In addition, the Gaza Health Ministry has been reporting deaths from starvation in northern Gaza, the number of which stands at 25 after an infant and a young woman succumbed to malnutrition earlier today.

Every now and then Israel lets in 200+ trucks to boast about it. Here is the tracker for the real numbers. The average is going up again at least, but over 500 trucks a day are needed just to sustain the population, many more to reverse the conditions of starvation and malnutrition.

https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=eyJrIjoiZTVkYmEwNmMtZWYxNy00ODhlLWI2ZjctNjIzMzQ5OGQxNzY5IiwidCI6IjI2MmY2YTQxLTIwZTktNDE0MC04ZDNlLWZkZjVlZWNiNDE1NyIsImMiOjl9&pageName=ReportSection3306863add46319dc574

The tracking site only lists 109 trucks entering Gaza today but likely not all updated yet.

Where is the ground fighting happening in Gaza now?

Some of the places where ground fighting has raged in Gaza for weeks are still seeing intense battles every day, according to the latest report by the Critical Threats Project (CTP). It says Palestinian fighters fired mortars and small arms on Israeli forces in the Tal al-Hawa and Zeitoun neighbourhoods south of Gaza City in central Gaza.

The Nahal Brigade of the Israeli army continues its operations in central Gaza, while Israeli forces are still demolishing structures along the new road they are building that effectively splits the Gaza Strip into two.

In Khan Younis in the south, the Givati Brigade raided Hamas infrastructure and said it found weapons and engaged with Palestinian fighters in the area.

Hamas fighters detonated a building in the southern Gaza area with Israeli soldiers inside and targeted Israeli infantry operating in tunnels in Bani Suheila.

Netanyahu says 13,000 Palestinian fighters killed in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that at least 13,000 “terrorists” were among the Palestinians killed in Israel’s war on Gaza and pledged to press ahead with an offensive in the southern city of Rafah, where 1.4 million people are sheltering.

He made the comments on Sunday during an interview with German media company Axel Springer, which owns Politico as well as Germany’s Bild newspaper and broadcaster Welt TV. The Israeli leader did not provide details on the killings of Palestinian fighters.

He said that extending Israel’s offensive into Rafah in southern Gaza was key to defeating Hamas.

“We are very close to victory… Once we begin military action against the remaining terror battalions in Rafah, it is only a question of weeks” until the intensive phase of fighting is concluded, Bild quoted Netanyahu as saying.

Again Israel sees all men as terrorists. 72% of those killed are women and children, 28% of 39,000 (dead + missing) = 11,000. I guess male children are terrorists too to get to 13,000 terrorists.

Israel prevents Muslim worshippers from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque for Ramadan

Israeli forces have prevented hundreds of Muslim worshippers from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem for prayers to mark the start of Ramadan on Sunday evening, according to the Wafa news agency.

Israeli forces barred men and young women entering the mosque, and only allowing women over the age of 40 to pray, it said. Israeli forces have restricted entry to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third-holiest site, for several months.

Israeli raids have been reported elsewhere in the occupied West Bank in the following locations:

  • The city of Tulkarem
  • The Balata camp, east of Nablus
  • An Israeli military bulldozer was hit by a bomb in the Nour Shams camp in Tulkarem
  • Israeli forces have closed the entrances to the town of Tuqu’, southeast of Bethlehem

No increase in humanitarian aid as Ramadan begins

Ramadan is just a few hours away and the situation on the ground is desperate. The entire Gaza Strip is suffering from acute food insecurity and there are ongoing restrictions on aid deliveries. Until this moment, we have seen no developments in terms of increasing aid to help people cope with the aftermath of Israeli attacks.

The people in the north are suffering the most as they have been cut off from humanitarian assistance for months now. Officials say an immediate ceasefire is needed there to avoid famine. Already 25 people have died of dehydration and malnutrition there.

Children in Gaza celebrate the start of Ramadan

Despite a lack of food, water and shelter, and with Israeli bombs a constant threat to their safety, children in Gaza still celebrated the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Sunday evening.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Ramadan in Gaza this year will be “unlike the holy month in previous years or anywhere else in the world” in light of the destruction of all aspects of life in the besieged enclave, including dozens of mosques.

Israel’s war on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 12,300 children since October 7, according to statistics from Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Pro-Palestine protesters rally near Oscars ceremony

Director Jonathan Glazer condemns Israel’s war on Gaza in Oscars speech

Director Jonathan Glazer has addressed Israel’s war on Gaza in his acceptance speech at the 2024 Academy Awards. The British director’s Holocaust drama, The Zone of Interest, was awarded Best International Feature Film at the ceremony in Los Angeles, California on Sunday.

“Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,” he said during his speech. “Whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza. All the victims of this dehumanisation. How do we resist?” he added as the audience cheered.

Jewish filmmaker seeks end to ‘dehumanisation’ of victims in Gaza, Israel in Oscar speech

British director Jonathan Glazer has delivered a speech condemning Israel’s aggression on the Gaza Strip after winning best foreign feature film at the Academy Awards for The Zone of Interest.

“Our film shows where dehumanisation leads at its worst. … We stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza,” he said.

The film depicts the life of the family of the Nazi commandant of Auschwitz living outside the walls of the death camp during World War II.

Why did Hollywood stars wear red pin badges at the Oscars?

Celebrities, including musicians Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, Poor Things star Mark Ruffalo, and comedian Ramy Youssef, wore red pins at the 96th Academy Awards to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The red pins were distributed by Artists4Ceasefire, a group of celebrities and entertainment industry members who collectively signed a letter late in October asking United States President Joe Biden to demand a ceasefire as well as the safe release of captives in Gaza. The pin design shows a red glossy circle with a hand and a black heart.

“The pin symbolises collective support for an immediate and permanent cease-fire, the release of all of the hostages and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza,” Artists4Ceasefire said in a press release.

“Compassion must prevail,” it added. The more than 380 signatories include Cate Blanchett, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez and Bradley Cooper.

“We are asking for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” actor and comedian Ramy Youssef told US media. “We are asking for justice and peace for the Palestinian people and also you know, a really universal message, which is let’s just stop killing the children,” he added.

Prior to Sunday’s ceremony, the red pins were seen at the Grammys and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards in February. During that time, Ruffalo was also spotted wearing the pin. “We’re not going to bomb our way to peace, and all we’re saying is, what’s wrong with giving a ceasefire a chance?” Ruffalo said on the DGA red carpet.

Separately, during the Golden Globe Awards in January, some stars were spotted wearing a yellow ribbon that was used to show support for the captives being held by Hamas.

Not very effective if you need to explain it. Sounds more like 'too afraid to say something' but I'll wear a small pin.

Israeli forces launch attacks on Rafah, Nuseirat

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic say Israeli forces have launched attacks on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza and on the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central part of the enclave. The overnight attacks come as Palestinians in Gaza prepare to observe the first fast of Ramadan.

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are now saying that at least three people have been killed and several more wounded in that bombing.

Al-Mawasi, a ‘safe zone’ in Gaza, attacked for a third time by Israel

Despite widespread devastation and dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, attacks show no sign of easing, with every part of the besieged enclave hit in the last 24 hours. Of concern is Israel’s heavy bombardment of al-Mawasi evacuation zone, where residents were previously ordered to relocate by the Israeli army. Among the dead are at least eight Palestinians who were sheltering in a tent.

This assault on what was deemed a safe area has shattered any remaining sense of security for Gaza’s traumatised population.

Casualties reported as Israeli forces attack Gaza City

The Wafa news agency is reporting a number of casualties after Israeli forces launched new air attacks in and around Gaza City. The agency said several people were killed in an assault on the Zeitoun neighbourhood, while a number of others were wounded in an attack on the Sabra neighbourhood.

The assaults came after an earlier Israeli attack on Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood, which is also in Gaza City, killed at least 10 people.

Wafa also reported Israel shelling in the southern city of Khan Younis.

At least 16 killed after Israeli military bombs home in Gaza City

The Israeli military has bombed a home in the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens more, the Wafa news agency reports. Most of those killed were women and children, according to the report.

Two more children in northern Gaza die from starvation

Local sources say that two more children have died due to severe malnutrition and dehydration at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza. This brings the total number of mostly children who have starved to death to 27.

Northern Gaza in particular is on the brink of famine as Israel continues to block vital humanitarian and food assistance. At least one in six children in the north are malnourished, according to the World Health Organization.

Khan Younis city, Gaza City see surge in Israeli attacks

In the past few hours, there has been a surge in attacks in the eastern part of Khan Younis city and Gaza City. A residential home was attacked, with people from one family reported killed and multiple other injuries transferred to al-Najjar Hospital in central Rafah.

In Khan Younis, there is not only an intense bombing campaign, but there is an ongoing systematic, controlled demolition of residential homes, to the point that entire areas in the eastern part of Khan Younis have been completely cleared from all physical structures of residential homes or infrastructure.

Gaza death toll rises

At least 31,112 people in Gaza have been killed and 72,760 wounded by Israeli attacks on the enclave since October 7, according to the Health Ministry. In the past 24 hours, 67 Palestinians have been killed and 106 wounded in Israeli attacks.

Israeli forces storm Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camp

Israeli forces have stormed the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarem as well as the Nur Shams refugee camp, destroying infrastructure amid confrontations with the Palestinians. According to Palestinian news agency Wafa, the raid on Tulkarem took place with more than 25 vehicles and four bulldozers deployed in its several streets.

Wafa reported that the Israeli military vehicles continued their way towards the Nur Shams refugee camp, east of Tulkarem, where, for the second time in two days, bulldozers destroyed infrastructure in the vicinity of the Saif Abu Lebda Roundabout at the western entrance to the camp.

Dozens arrested in Israeli raids on occupied West Bank

The Israeli army has arrested at least 25 Palestinians, including former prisoners and children, in multiple raids overnight across several cities in the occupied West Bank.

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, this brings the total number of Palestinians arrested since October 7 to 7,530.

The raids were concentrated in the governorates of Ramallah and el-Bireh, Qalqilya, Salfit and Bethlehem.

Palestinian official slams Netanyahu’s plans to build more detention centres

Qaddoura Fares, head of the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, has condemned Netanyahu’s decision to provide more detention holding centres. “Netanyahu’s mind is crowded with hateful, aggressive plans, and the decision he made to equip and prepare new detention places categorically confirms his decision to continue the war against the Palestinian people for as long as possible,” Fares said in a statement.

On Sunday, Netanyahu met several of his ministers, including far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and instructed them to carry out his decision.

“This means that the series of arrests will continue in an upward curve against our defenceless people,” Fares said.

A Ramadan in Gaza like no other

Overshadowed by Israel’s war and hunger, Palestinians in Gaza are set to experience a Ramadan like no other. Half of the enclave’s 2.3 million people are squeezed into the southern city of Rafah, with many living in plastic tents and facing severe shortages of food.

Despite the hardship, some tried to find cheer by decorating their tents with lights and lanterns.

Ramadan in Gaza – Overshadowed by Israel’s war and hunger

Palestinians in Gaza made preparations to observe the Muslim holy month of Ramadan under the shadow of an Israeli siege that has severely restricted food to millions in the besieged enclave.

Ramadan ‘will add to the tragedies’ of Palestinians in Gaza

As Muslims across the world welcome Ramadan, the holy month is received differently by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. With at least 1.7 million people displaced, more than 31,000 killed, and famine in northern Gaza, families have little food or water to break their fasts with.

“This year’s Ramadan is different from previous years,” said Emad al-Najjar, a displaced Palestinian from northern Gaza. “We are far away from our loved ones, our families, relatives and friends in the north. Everything is different.”

As Israel continues to block enough aid from entering Gaza, the little food available in markets is unaffordable. “I came here to buy but I can’t find anything to buy,” Sufian al-Yazji said. “There’s nothing, no dates or milk, or anything. One can’t find anything for their children. All these canned goods are full of germs that infect the stomach. We need vegetables and fruits to feed our children because they’ve weakened and will die from hunger.”

Difficult Ramadan due to food shortages and displacement

It is a very difficult time given that if we think of the overcrowded southern parts of Gaza, mainly in Rafah, the markets are either almost depleted of basic supplies or are at a very high price. People are still grieving and the fact that their families are torn apart, with some family members remaining in the northern part facing this acute famine, just makes them less excited about this holy month.

Everyone we’ve known has lost a family member or loved one or someone they knew from their networks, which makes it very difficult for people. People used to prepare and start the first day of Ramadan with festivities, decorations, lights and lanterns in the streets, markets and mosques, the vast majority of those are now destroyed.

Ramadan in Gaza: ‘Every family is sad, has a martyr’

As we’ve been reporting, Palestinians began fasting for Ramadan with no end in sight to Israeli attacks and worsening hunger. During the Muslim holy month, families would ordinarily break the daily fast with feasts but amid the war, even where food is available, there is little beyond canned goods and the prices are too high for many.

“You don’t see anyone with joy in their eyes,” Sabah al-Hendi told AP in the southernmost city of Rafah. “Every family is sad. Every family has a martyr.”

Awni al-Kayyal, a 50-year-old displaced Palestinian in Gaza, says the beginning of Ramadan “has been sad and covered in darkness, with the taste and stench of blood everywhere”. “We do not have any food for our iftar table,” he told AFP, referring to the fast-breaking evening meal, saying that Israel does not want Gaza residents “to have any joy during Ramadan”.

Gaza receives Ramadan with ‘grief, starvation and blood’: Imam in Rafah

Nader Abu Sharekh, an Islamic preacher, has told Al Jazeera from Rafah that “the whole world has forsaken” Gaza. “We address Muslims in every corner of the world. How can you accept seeing Gaza people suffer in this holy month,” he said. Abu Sharekh said Gaza’s residents are “forsaken, left with nothing, not even potable water”, adding that “people in the north of Gaza are forced to eat animal fodder”.

“Israel is slaughtering our people, innocent women and children … There is not a single house that is not mourning the loss of loved ones. And above all, we are starving to death,” he said. “The Gaza people are receiving Ramadan, the holy month, with grief, sadness, starvation and blood,” he concluded.

A sad Ramadan for people in Gaza amid Israel’s continued attacks

in Deir el-Balah, as Israeli bombing continues and the list of civilians being killed gets longer by the day, there is little to indicate that the festivities are on the doorstep. “This year’s Ramadan is starkly different,” said Atia Harb, 38, who had some old Ramadan decorations laid out in his market stall and was playing festive tunes, trying his best to attract customers despite the grim conditions.

“There is non-stop noise of bombs and racing ambulances.”

Families in Deir el-Balah can’t afford first Iftar meal

Gaza’s central city of Deir el-Balah, where more than half a million are taking shelter, does not have enough food in the markets for families on the first day of Ramadan. “I have now been working all day, selling wood since sunrise, but I haven’t earned enough to provide my family with an Iftar meal. It’s utterly heartbreaking,” Mohammed Jebril, a father of four children, told Al Jazeera.

The 40-year-old said he hoped the truce negotiations would lead to a deal soon. “My family is sick of canned food. They’re asking me for red meat or chicken; however, these are not available or are too expensive to buy. As a father, it’s too painful to not be able to provide what little my children are asking for,” he added.

Many residents of Gaza fear attending Ramadan evening prayers as Israel targets mosques

Mahmoud Al-Qeshwi, an English teacher in Rafah, has told Al Jazeera that the first day of Ramadan is “difficult” as finding food is still an obstacle, and it is being priced at about “10 times” the amount before the war. He said that he is working at a free volunteer food kitchen that provides hot meals to “tens of thousands” of displaced families.

As many Palestinians in Gaza attended Ramadan evening prayers, Al-Qeshwi explained that while there are still some mosques for people to pray at, “a lot of people are afraid to go”.

“You know that a lot of mosques are attacked, so it’s a difficult to go pray, and you know that they may attack. A lot of rockets may destroy everything around, so some prayers we pray at home,” he said.

Displaced Gaza residents extend well-wishes for Ramadan despite ‘deep wounds, bitter grief and heavy sorrows’

‘Very sad’ Ramadan begins in Gaza without ceasefire

Sami Al-Arian, director of the Centre for Islamic and Global Affairs, has told Al Jazeera that it is a “very sad moment” in Gaza as Ramadan begins without a ceasefire and for many on the brink of famine.

“Unfortunately, Israel does not see the Palestinians as human beings; they say they are ‘human animals’. They do not see the human side to Palestinians – they have been violating their rights left and right,” he said.

“Even US President Biden has been trying to tell them, ‘Please stop for six weeks at least, let Ramadan be a peaceful month this time around,’ and they [Israel] continue to say no.”

Palestinians in occupied West Bank welcome sombre Ramadan

Palestinians in the West Bank are taking part in a more sombre Ramadan this year, in light of the Israeli war on Gaza, shunning decorations and focusing more on prayer and religious customs, says Ahmed Sharaf, lecturer at the College of Science and Islamic Studies at An-Najah University.

“Ramadan came this year as Palestinians face economic hardships as a result of tightening Israeli closures of Palestinian cities and towns and the prevention of Palestinian workers from working inside Israel,” he told Al Jazeera.

“It also came as Palestinians in Gaza are on the verge of famine, and many are dying of malnutrition and dehydration. Muslims all over the world should do whatever they can to support them whether through providing aid or through supplication to God to lift the calamity from our people.”

Extremely tense scenes in Jerusalem as Ramadan begins

Footage seems to indicate that people are not being allowed through certain entrances towards al-Aqsa Mosque inside Jerusalem’s Old City. The Old City is not being decorated this year in light of events in Gaza, and the security presence last night across Jerusalem was extremely intense with a large number of vehicles on the streets in occupied East Jerusalem.

Palestinians have been saying that they’ve been fasting for five months, it’s not something that will begin with Ramadan this year.

A lot of that optimism about a ceasefire before Ramadan came from President Biden but he’s had to walk back on that. Israel has not commented on whether its officials will be travelling to Cairo for another round of talks. And a member of Hamas I spoke to said that they have not yet been invited by the Egyptians to continue negotiations.

Palestinians blocked from praying at Al-Aqsa on eve of Ramadan

Security of Al-Aqsa Mosque moved from Ben-Gvir to Netanyahu

Mahjoob Zweiri, a professor at Qatar University, says after pressure from the US and European countries, there was a debate within the Israeli government which made the far-right security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, no longer in charge of Al-Aqsa Mosque and gave Netanyahu full responsibility.

“This happened last night after two to three weeks of discussion behind closed doors between the Americans, the Europeans and the Israelis about this particular issue because Americans have no interest in seeing the West Bank as basically another Gaza,” Zweiri told Al Jazeera. “If the Israelis do not listen to the Americans, [the] West Bank is likely to become another Gaza in a matter of months.”

He added that the security assessment that Netanyahu backed, shared by the Israeli security service Shin Bet and intelligence service Mossad, found that the more Palestinians are allowed into Al-Aqsa Mosque, the less “confrontational situation”, which was convincing in part due to the pressure from the US.

Israel’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound restrictions push towards ‘explosion’: Jordan

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has said restrictions imposed by Israel on Muslim worshippers’ access to Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the Muslim fasting month was pushing the situation towards an “explosion”.

In remarks on state media, Safadi said his country rejected Israel’s announced move to limit access to the holy site during Ramadan, citing security needs with war raging in Gaza. Jordan echoes the Palestinian view that such restrictions were an attack on freedom of worship, he said.

Gallant says Israel ‘respects the freedom of worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque’

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant says in a video address that his country “respects the freedom of worship at Al-Aqsa [Mosque complex] and all the holy places”.

This comes after Israel limited access to Islam’s third holiest site to Muslim worshippers during Ramadan, citing security needs with war raging in Gaza.
