Israel hits two Syria border crossings with Lebanon

Israeli air attacks hit two border crossings linking Lebanon with Syria, Lebanon’s Transport Minister Ali Hamieh has told the Reuters news agency.

The attacks early on Friday hit just across the border on the Syrian side of both the Arida crossing in northern Lebanon and the Jousieh crossing that links to eastern Lebanon, Hamieh said.

Both crossings are important access points to Syria’s Homs province, where opposition forces are seeking to advance against government forces after sweeping through northern Syria.

Israel says it hit Hezbollah ‘smuggling route’ on Syria-Lebanon border

Israel’s army says it has conducted air attacks on Hezbollah “weapon-smuggling routes” on the Syria-Lebanon border, just over a week into a fragile ceasefire in Lebanon.

The Israeli air force “conducted strikes on weapon-smuggling routes and terror infrastructure sites located near the Syrian regime’s crossings at the Syrian-Lebanese border”, the military said in a statement that included a map identifying the crossing as Arida.

Meanwhile, the Syrian state news agency (SANA) has reported that the Arida border crossing is out of service due to an Israeli attack.

Israeli soldiers destroy weapons in south Lebanon: Army

Troops in southwestern Lebanon located several rocket launchers, among other weapons, according to the military. An army statement said soldiers found and destroyed launchers, mortars, rockets, ammunition crates and assault rifles. The military operates in accordance with the understandings between Israel and Lebanon, while maintaining the terms of the ceasefire, it added.

Since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was brokered less than two weeks ago, Israel has continued to bomb sites across Lebanon, killing and wounding civilians.

Arida Lebanon-Syria border crossing destroyed by Israel

The Arida border crossing has been destroyed. The Israeli strikes hit early this morning, and it wasn’t the first time this crossing was hit in the past few days. The Israeli military is saying it hit this crossing because Hezbollah was using it to smuggle weapons, although it did not provide any evidence.

This is a main transit route for people and goods. We have to remember that Lebanon’s lifeline is Syria, in the sense that the other border is with Israel, and Lebanon and Israel are in a state of war.

Syria is Lebanon’s only route to reach Gulf Arab countries, for example, to export fruit and vegetables. And there are many links between people on both sides of the border.

The Syrian conflict has no doubt spilled over into Lebanon. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians had escaped into Lebanon since 2011, including those who had escaped persecution at the hands of the Syrian regime.

But others went to Lebanon as economic migrants looking for work and ways to survive, because although Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declared victory and managed to remain in power, he was not able to rebuild the country.

The economy is a shambles, there’s a humanitarian crisis, people live on international aid when it’s available – so many people could not go back for economic reasons. And many young Syrian men in Lebanon refused to go back because they didn’t want to join the Syrian army.

The outcome of these rapid developments in Syria will no doubt affect the situation here, because the political divisions in Syria are also reflected here in Lebanon.

Israeli army says it is bolstering forces around border with Syria

The military says the move is due to developments in the civil war in the neighbouring country.

It deployed soldiers to the occupied Golan Heights, saying it is “raising their readiness according to the various scenarios”.

Lebanese army says committee to supervise Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire to meet

The army says in a post on X that the five-member “supervisory committee” will meet early next week.

Members of the committee, it said, including high-ranking US and French military officers, toured the “South Litani Sector” of Lebanon by helicopter to see “the reality on the ground” in advance of the meeting.

The US insists that the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is holding despite dozens of what the French government has termed “violations” of the agreement by Israel.

These “violations” are in the form of daily attacks on Lebanese territory, and have led to the killing and wounding of civilians.

Palestine tables two draft resolutions at UN General Assembly

Palestine’s mission to the United Nations tabled two draft resolutions at the UN General Assembly on Thursday evening, which will be voted on December 11 when the Emergency Special Session on Palestine resumes.

The first draft resolution, among several statements, “demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza, as well as immediate access to “humanitarian assistance indispensable” to the survival of its population.

The second draft resolution focuses on the status of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), deploring Israel’s judicial and physical attacks on the agency and “underscores that UNRWA remains the backbone of humanitarian response in Gaza”.

Read the full text of both draft resolutions in the post below:

Western denials of Israel’s genocide ‘a case-study in political cynicism’: UN expert

Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, said facts of law are being ignored and prejudice and ideology has prevailed among Western politicians, who are protecting Israel as it perpetrates genocide in Gaza.

“One day the blunt denial of the Israeli genocide in Gaza by many Western politicians will be a case-study in political cynicism,” Albanese wrote in a post on social media.

The UN’s top expert on Palestine said she has written two reports this year alone that had analysed Israel’s “acts of genocide” and also placed the Israeli state’s “intent” to commit genocide against Palestinians in a historical context.

WHO chief says attacks on healthcare a ‘new normal’ in conflict

From Gaza, Lebanon and Ukraine to conflicts in Afghanistan, Haiti, Myanmar and Sudan, attacking healthcare centres has become a new worrying trend, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

So far in 2024, the WHO has confirmed more than 1,200 attacks on healthcare across multiple countries, Tedros said.

“Over the past three years we have seen an increase in the frequency, scale and impact of attacks on healthcare,” he added.

Since WHO started monitoring such incidents in 2018, there have been more than 7,600 attacks on healthcare verified in 21 countries and territories, with more than 2,600 health workers and patients killed and 5,400 injured.

Without accountability for such attacks, they will continue, Tedros warned.

“The best medicine is peace,” he added.

Protesters surround former Israeli defence minister’s hotel in New York

Protesters holding signs labelling Yoav Gallant a war criminal and chanting “shame!” have surrounded the Park Lane Hotel in Manhattan, where the former Israeli defence minister is staying.

Gallant, who was removed from his post by Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu in a controversial move in November, is currently in New York visiting with the city’s Jewish community in advance of meetings with senior Biden officials in Washington.

Gallant visited a Brooklyn synagogue on Thursday, where he spoke with supporters about Israel’s military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Gallant and Netanyahu – along with Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif – in November for allegedly carrying out war crimes as part of Israel’s war on Gaza since October 2023.

The White House, however, has said it “fundamentally rejects” the validity of the warrants and Gallant will not face arrest in the US.

The US harboring war criminals is nothing new :/

Exhibition by Palestinian photographers shines light on ‘crisis of humanity’ in Gaza

The photographic work of 14 Palestinian journalists in Gaza is being showcased in a new exhibition made available online by the UN.

“Gaza, Palestine: A crisis of humanity, a cry for justice”, documents the “massive violations committed by Israel in its punitive assault on Gaza following the 7 October attack on Israel”, the exhibition’s online brochure states.

“This collective photo essay, presents a small glimpse into this profoundly tragic reality and the suffering endured by the Palestinian people in Gaza today through the compelling images captured since October 2023,” it adds.

“Their stories bear witness to one catastrophic year of tragedy and survival that will forever stain our collective conscience, crying out for justice and for humanity to prevail.”

Hamas official says Gaza ceasefire talks have resumed after weeks-long hiatus

A Hamas official says international mediators have resumed negotiating with the Palestinian group and Israel over a ceasefire in Gaza, and that he was hopeful a deal to end the 14-month war was within reach.

Ceasefire negotiations were halted last month when Qatar suspended talks with mediators from Egypt and the United States because of frustration over a lack of progress between Israel and Hamas.

But there has been a “reactivation” of efforts in recent days to end the fighting, release captives from Gaza and free Palestinian prisoners in Israel, according to Basem Naim, an official in Hamas’s political bureau who spoke with The Associated Press news agency.

Israeli and German army commanders hold talks

Israeli army chief of staff Herzi Halevi has hosted his German counterpart, Carsten Breuer.

“The two discussed the latest operational events with an emphasis on the northern theatre, the increasingly strong cooperation between the armies, and preparedness for near and distant threats,” an Israeli army statement said, adding that the meeting took place yesterday.

It added: “The Chief of Staff expressed his appreciation to the German Chief of Staff for their shared commitment to strengthening regional stability and security in the Middle East.”

Germany rejects Amnesty’s accusation that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza

Asked for a response to Amnesty’s report that accused Israel of committing “genocide” against Palestinians in its war on Gaza, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer told reporters: “The question of genocide presupposes a clear intention to eradicate an ethnic group. I still do not recognise any such clear intention and therefore I cannot share the conclusions of the report.

“We take the accusations in the report very seriously and are currently analysing them,” he said. “We have repeatedly urged the Israeli government to adjust its military operations in Gaza and better fulfil its obligations to protect civilians,” Fischer said.

“However it is still our opinion that Israel is acting in defence against Hamas which sparked this conflict with its terror attacks,” he said.

On Thursday the London-based human rights group published a 300-page report on Israel’s offensive in Gaza, saying its findings were based on satellite images documenting devastation, fieldwork and ground reports from people in Gaza, as well as “dehumanising and genocidal statements by Israeli gover

Of course the countries complicit in genocide will deny its a genocide.

Video footage shows drone attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital, teenager in wheelchair killed

We have been reporting on the Israeli drone and quadcopter attacks on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya, which have targeted staff, patients and members of the public.

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic have obtained harrowing video footage showing the aftermath of one Israeli drone attack at the entrance to the hospital that killed a 16-year-old patient in a wheelchair and wounded at least 12 others people, including medical staff.

Palestine Red Crescent emergency medic shot, killed in Khan Younis

Another volunteer member of the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has been killed in Gaza, the organisation said.

Alaa al-Derawi, an emergency medical technician, died after being shot in the chest in the Khan Younis area in the south of the enclave while returning from a mission escorting patients to a Red Crescent field hospital in Rafah, the PRCS said on Thursday.

The PRCS, which has lost dozens of members of staff to Israeli military attacks, did not identify who had shot and killed al-Derawi.

“The Society strongly condemns this act and reiterates the critical importance of safeguarding and respecting the emblem and its bearers to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance,” the organisation said.

In October, the PRCS said that 34 staff members had been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023, including 19 who were directly targeted while performing Red Crescent duties.

Translation: The Palestine Red Crescent Society mourns the loss of its volunteer paramedic, Alaa al-Derawi, a martyr of humanitarian work who was killed today after being shot in the chest in the Khan Younis area while returning from a mission to transport patients to his workplace at the Red Crescent ambulance point set up in the Red Cross field hospital in Rafah …

Anguish, despair after Israeli air strike kills Palestinian toddler in Gaza

Palestinian fighters continue to battle in Rafah, Gaza City, Jabalia, lull reported in Beit Lahiya

Palestinian fighters with the National Resistance Brigades fired mortars at Israel armour in Rafah city, in the south of the Strip, on Thursday as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) detonated improvised explosive devices in Gaza City in the north, war monitors report.

PIJ and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades also attacked Israeli armour and ground forces in the north’s Jabalia refugee camp.

US-based security think tanks the Critical Threats Project (CTP) and the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said Israeli forces have not fought close-quarter battles with Palestinian fighters in northern Beit Lahiya in recent days, where a more than 60-day siege continues.

The lull in up-close street fighting by Palestinian groups in Beit Lahiya could indicate Israeli forces are “strengthening…operational control” in the area, the CTP/ISW report states.

According to the report, the Israeli army has indicated it will conclude ground operations in nearby Jabalia in the coming weeks, though Palestinian groups continue to launch attacks there.

Israeli forces storm Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital once again

Al Jazeera Arabic’s correspondent in Gaza has said Israeli forces have raided the medical facility in Beit Lahiya, north Gaza, and forced patients and wounded people to leave.

The Kamal Adwan Hospital has faced repeated Israeli military attacks over recent weeks, including a drone strike on Thursday that killed a 16-year-old boy in a wheelchair and wounded at least 12 other people. On November 29, an Israeli drone also killed Dr Ahmed al-Kahlout, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital’s intensive care unit, as he was passing through the facility’s entrance gate.

Israeli air attack in Rafah kills at least 3

Israeli fighter jets bombed a group of Palestinians in Khirbet al-Adas, north of Rafah in southern Gaza, killing at least three people, Al Jazeera Arabic reports.

Israeli attacks kill four staff members at Kamal Adwan Hospital, director says

The director of north Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital says four staff members were killed on Friday in Israeli attacks on the facility, one of the last functioning health centres in the area.

“There was a series of air strikes on the northern and western sides of the hospital, accompanied by intense and direct fire,” the AFP news agency quoted Hussam Abu Safia as saying.

At least 29 people killed in Israeli strike on Kamal Adwan Hospital

Israeli strikes around Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern city of Beit Lahiya have killed 29 people, Gaza’s civil defence agency said.

“There was a series of air strikes on the northern and western sides of the hospital, accompanied by intense and direct fire,” hospital director Hossam Abu Safieh told AFP, adding that four staff members were killed.

Mahmud Bassal, the civil defence agency’s spokesperson, added that “at least 29 people were killed and dozens were wounded … since dawn on Friday as a result of the continuing Israeli shelling around Kamal Adwan Hospital.”

Bassal said the Israeli army entered the hospital, evacuated patients and arrested several Palestinians. Abu Safieh added that no surgeons were left at the hospital following the raid.

Israeli forces, Palestinian fighters engaged in heavy clashes in Balata camp

A convoy of Israeli military vehicles has stormed the Balata camp, near Nablus in the occupied West Bank, Al Jazeera Arabic reports.

No casualties have been reported so far.

Palestinian ministry deplores theft of vehicle by ‘outlaws’ in occupied West Bank

The Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture has condemned the robbery of one of its vehicles by “Palestinian outlaws” in the occupied West Bank’s city of Jenin, as well as the robbery of another vehicle belonging to the Palestinian Authority (PA) military liaison service, and shooting at PA security services offices, the Wafa news agency reports.

The ministry said in a statement that its vehicles in Jenin have always been used to transport aid and assistance to Palestinian farmers and the residents of Jenin’s refugee camp.

The robbery of the vehicle was “a cowardly act alien to our Palestinian society, which certainly serves the occupation”, Wafa quoted the ministry as saying. The ministry also said that members of the PA’s security services, which came under attack overnight, were “our sons, brothers and protectors”.

“We support them and appreciate their role in preserving the security and safety of our country and our people,” the ministry said.

A video clip shared on social media earlier showed what was said to be armed clashes between Palestinian resistance fighters and the PA’s security forces around the Jenin refugee camp overnight.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened earlier / more often, as the PA is often referred to as merely a tool of the occupation.

‘Cannot rest even in death’: Israeli forces confiscate body of slain Palestinian teen

Defense for Children Palestine has accused Israel of again violating international humanitarian and human rights law by confiscating the body of a 15-year-old Palestinian youth who was shot dead by an “Israeli settler guard” in occupied East Jerusalem.

The child rights group said Omar Hussam Yaqoub Shuwaiki, 15, was shot and killed on Tuesday evening in the Silwan neighbourhood, southeast of the Old City of Jerusalem, by a settler employed as a guard by a private security firm.

The teenager was hit with three bullets, the organisation said, and his death was announced some hours later by Israeli authorities who continue to withhold the boy’s body from his family.

“Palestinian children cannot rest even in death as Israeli authorities continue confiscating children’s bodies and withholding them from their families indefinitely,” Defense for Children said in a statement.

Israeli soldiers and settlers have now killed 171 Palestinian children in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 2023, the group said.

Israel has withheld the bodies of Palestinian children from their families since 2016. After releasing six bodies to relatives, there are still 39 children whose remains are detained by Israeli authorities, in what their families say amounts to a practice of “collective punishment”.

Palestinian man killed by Israeli forces in raid on Balata camp

Four other journalists were briefly held. They were also subjected to abuse before being released, the report said.

Medical staff forced to leave Kamal Adwan Hospital after Israeli attacks

As we’ve been reporting, the Israeli army stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza under the cover of heavy artillery and machineguns. An ambulance was also targeted outside the facility while several patients were detained.

The hospital’s medical director described the situation in and around the hospital as catastrophic. On Thursday, Israeli drones shot and killed at least seven Palestinians inside the hospital.

A medical team from Indonesia was forced to evacuate the hospital after only recently having arrived there to provide assistance. “We just came from Kamal Adwan Hospital,” Faradina Sulistiyani, a general surgeon from the Medical Emergency Rescue Committee Indonesia, said. “There were two warnings for us to evacuate the hospital and they are heavily bombing the hospital now. There are a lot of medical staff and patients out there.”

Kamal Adwan Hospital completely evacuated

More disturbing reports are coming out from the vicinity of Kamal Adwan Hospital.

Among the many challenges is the heavy presence of the Israeli military, the armoured vehicles, tanks and quadcopters are a very visible presence monitoring the area and shooting at any moving object, whether within the area or inside the facility.

The entire facility has been completely evacuated by the Israeli military. In the early hours of today, the military ordered the director of the hospital to evacuate everyone from the hospital and go through a checkpoint leaving the area.

At that particular checkpoint, 70 people were detained and taken to unknown area for interrogation.

Israeli military denies targeting Kamal Adwan Hospital

As we’ve been reporting, attacks on Kamal Adwan Hospital this morning by Israeli forces killed at least 29 people, including hospital staff. The Israeli military has now come forward with a denial, saying it did not target or enter the northern Gaza hospital.

In a statement, the army said it would “continue to operate against terror infrastructure and terrorists” in northern Gaza, including “adjacent to” the hospital.

Back to flat out lies, it doesn't matter anyway. Even if they would admit the truth, the US will continue to protect the IDF with "concerns".

Six Palestinians killed by Israeli air strikes across Gaza

Five people killed in Israeli air strike on Nuseirat refugee camp

At least five people, including children, were killed during an Israeli air strike on a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.

The Wafa news agency reported that Israeli warplanes targeted a house that had been evacuated before the attack, which resulted in the killing of five people and wounding of several others in neighbouring homes.

Three of those who were killed were transported to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah.

Death toll in Israeli attack on Nuseirat camp rises

An Israeli attack on a house in Nuseirat refugee camp killed 14 people, including three children and two women, according to our colleagues on the ground.

The attack wounded at least 30 people.
