Israeli forces attack Lebanon-Syria border crossing

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) is reporting that Israeli fighter jets struck the Jarmash Qald al-Sabaa crossing between eastern Hermel and Syria late on Saturday evening. The raid followed a day of attacks on the eastern Baalbek and Hermel regions which resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people there.

UN figures show some 473,000 people have crossed from Lebanon into Syria since September following the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israeli forces escalate attacks in southern Lebanon

The Lebanese National News Agency has provided an update on Israeli forces who escalated their attacks on Tyre and Bint Jbeil overnight:

  • Fifteen people were killed in a raid on the civil defence centre affiliated to the Islamic Mission Scouts Association in Derqim Ras al-Ain.
  • Five people were killed and many others were injured in an attack on a house in Hanawi.
  • A house was raided in Ain Baal, injuring five civilians who were taken to hospitals in Tyre.
  • Sarifa was raided after midnight, causing serious and moderate injuries to civilians being treated in Hiram Hospital in al-Abbassieh, and severely damaging the hospital’s equipment.
  • Seven raids were carried out on the Hosh area, destroying several buildings.
  • Israeli warplanes and drones destroyed homes in al-Abbassieh, Qasimiya, al-Barghaliya, al-Shubriha, Ain Baal, Batwolya, Chaqra, Serbia, Beit Lev, al-Samaiya Shama, and Hanine.
  • After midnight, the towns of Majdal Zoun, Tirarfa, Dhahira, the outskirts of Konin and the city of Bint Jbeil were subjected to direct Israeli artillery fire.
  • Most of the raids carried out by Israeli forces last night targeted civil defence centres of the Islamic Mission Scout Association and the Islamic Health Authority.

In Lebanon, ‘misleading’ and sporadic Israeli evacuation orders instil fear

Since mid-September, Israeli military strikes in Lebanon have intensified, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths. These strikes often occur without proper evacuation warnings, though warnings are sometimes issued, according to observers not always in good faith.

Two-year-old Ayham Ali Mohammad was injured in an air attack on October 22, which destroyed his home, killed his mother and brother, and left him with scars. Despite no warning of the attack, locals managed to rescue him.

Numerous buildings in regions such as Beirut’s southern suburbs, the Bekaa Valley, and southern Lebanon, have faced heavy bombings, leaving many injured.

Evacuation orders typically come late at night or early morning and are communicated through various means, such as maps and messages from the Israeli military’s Arabic spokesman, drawing criticism for seemingly legitimising bombings under the guise of targeting “terrorist” threats.

Rescuers searching for survivors from under the rubble after an Israeli air strike next to Rafic Hariri Hospital, Beirut

Civil defence rescues survivors in Lebanon’s Ras al-Ain, Nabatieh, Bekaa

Lebanon’s civil defence has given an update on rescue efforts after overnight Israeli attacks:

  • Fifteen bodies were recovered and two wounded people were rescued from the rubble in Ras al-Ain in southern Lebanon. Rescuers continue to search for more survivors.
  • Two injured survivors were pulled from under the rubble in Nabatieh city and transferred to a hospital.
  • A building fire was extinguished in Beirut’s southern suburb after it was exposed to an Israeli raid two days ago.
  • A fire in a food warehouse in Beirut’s Saint Therese, caused by an Israeli raid two days ago, was also extinguished.
  • A body was retrieved and three wounded survivors were rescued in Sahmar town in the western Bekaa district while civil defence extinguished a house fire in the same location.
  • It provided water to internally displaced people’s (IDP) shelters in many areas.

Lebanon state media report Israeli strike on Baalbek

Lebanese official media have reported an Israeli attack on a house in the main eastern city of Baalbek, which was not preceded by a forced displacement order from Israeli forces.

“Enemy aircraft launched a strike on a house in the al-Laqees neighbourhood” of the city, the National News Agency said.

Lebanon says at least 12 killed in Israeli strike north of Beirut

Lebanon’s Health Ministry says an Israeli strike has killed 12 people, including three children, in the village of Almat, north of Beirut. “The Israeli enemy strike on Almat in the Jbeil district killed 12 people, including three children, in a preliminary toll,” the ministry said in a statement.

Israeli attack kills 20 in Lebanon’s Jbeil: Ministry

At least 20 people, including three children, were killed and six others injured in an Israeli strike on Almat’s Jbeil district in the Mount Lebanon governorate, the Health Ministry says. Crews continue to remove rubble from the site, it added.

Three paramedics killed in Lebanon’s Sidon district: Ministry

An Israeli air raid on a centre affiliated with the Islamic Health Authority’s civil defence team in Adloun, in Lebanon’s Sidon district, killed three paramedics, the country’s Health Ministry has said.

It condemned the attack, calling the targeting of paramedics an “Israeli war crime”, which adds to the “violence and inhumanity” of the ongoing war.

Brunt of Israel’s war in Lebanon being borne by civilians

Jbeil is near the historic town of Byblos – northeast of Beirut. This is only the second time that it’s been attacked. Widespread devastation is taking place – 20 people killed, including at least three children.

And just about 40 minutes after that, an attack in Sidon, where three people were killed. This has been happening across Lebanon – not confined to the south or Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Southern Lebanon, in particular, continues to be pounded by Israeli artillery strikes from the north. It’s very clear now that the brunt of the devastation that has taken place, either in the south or across other parts of Lebanon, is being borne by civilians.

Death toll in Israeli raid on Lebanon’s Almat rises to 23

Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health says the Israeli raid on Almat in Lebanon’s Mount Lebanon governorate has killed 23 people, including seven children. The ministry added that the death toll is likely to climb. Another six people have been wounded in the attack.

Three people were also killed and two others wounded in an Israeli strike on Mashghara in the western part of Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley late on Saturday, while one person was killed and four others injured in a strike on Sahmar, also in western Bekaa, that occurred the same night, the health ministry said.

Hezbollah claims several attacks on Israeli targets

The Lebanese armed group says it targeted the Avital site – in the occupied Golan Heights in Syria – with missiles, describing it as “a technical and electronic reconnaissance centre”. Hezbollah said its fighters also targeted a gathering of Israeli forces in Kahil Heights on the eastern outskirts of the southern Lebanese town of Maroun al-Ras.

More than 50 killed in Lebanon in one day

At least 53 people were killed across Lebanon in Israeli attacks on Saturday, the country’s Health Ministry says. The death toll has now climbed to 3,186 with 14,078 wounded since attacks between Hezbollah and Israel started more than a year ago.

Israeli air raid tagets area near Damascus: SANA

Initial reports indicate an Israeli strike targeted an area south of Damascus, the official SANA news agency reports. The agency said that there is an unknown “number of dead and injured in the Israeli aggression on the Sayyida Zaynab area in the outskirts of Damascus”.

Syrian activists and local news outlets published footage on social media sites that was verified by Al Jazeera showing the explosion site.

War monitor says Israeli strike kills three south of Damascus: Report

The Israeli strike we reported on earlier that targeted an apartment has killed three people, a war monitor has said. “An Israeli air strike killed three people in the Sayyida Zeinab area,” Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP.

The watchdog said the apartment belonged “to the Lebanese Hezbollah group … in a stronghold of pro-Iran groups”.

US, UK forces raid Yemen’s capital

The Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV is reporting that US and UK forces have launched raids on the Yemeni capital Sanaa, the Amran governorate and other areas of the country.

US officials have confirmed launching the attacks.

They said that US forces carried out “multiple airstrikes” on “Houthi weapons storage facilities… that contained various advanced conventional weapons used to target military and civilian vessels navigating international waters throughout the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden”.

US and UK forces have been attacking Houthi positions in Yemen, in response to the rebel group’s assaults on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis, who control northern Yemen, say their attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

US ‘freezes’ bulldozer delivery to Israel: Report

The US has frozen the delivery of 130 bulldozers to Israel amid home demolitions in the Gaza Strip, according to a report by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The Israeli Defence Ministry had signed a contract to buy the D9 bulldozers, a type of heavy-duty construction equipment produced by Caterpillar, the daily reported.

According to it, the bulldozers were primarily intended for flattening structures in the Gaza Strip, which had led to significant internal criticism in the US, leading to intense pressure on President Joe Biden’s administration, resulting in a freeze on the deliveries.

Several existing D9 bulldozers currently employed by the Israeli army in Gaza need maintenance, the report said.

Amsterdam police say it will arrest people defying demonstration ban

Amsterdam police have instructed protesters to leave Dam Square, located in the city centre and said they would arrest people who refuse to leave, the city of Amsterdam said on the social media platform X.

Earlier today, a court in Amsterdam upheld a ban on demonstrations in the city that was imposed after Israeli football fans clashed with pro-Palestinian protesters.

Amsterdam football clashes fallout is polarising, dangerous

Police have surrounded protesters who have come out to vent their anger about the framing of the riots last Thursday night as anti-Semitic.

There is a ban for protesting imposed but people decided to appear anyway. These are student groups, Palestine Solidarity groups, anti-racism groups. Some people have been arrested. Police are trying to remove them from the square. I’ve also seen tourists from India questioned by police.

The mayor and the authorities in the Netherlands and also in Israel have only focused on the violence committed against the Israeli Maccabi football fans. This violence has led to fear among Jewish people in Amsterdam.

But this is not the only side of the story. What happened is that the Maccabi fans – hooligans – came to Amsterdam. They had racist songs glorifying the genocide in Gaza. They attacked people here as well.

More and more pictures are emerging, with these fans with iron poles and sticks also attacking people. And that side of the story is just simply not being told. And that’s why people here are very angry.

This is a protest ban which we also don’t know any history of in Amsterdam. The mayor has always said that protesting in the Netherlands is a fundamental right. So now this ban is very serious and people are very much worrying about what this could lead to, looking at freedom of speech.

There’s a lot of Islamophobic rhetoric also going around. The situation is very much polarised and increasingly dangerous.

Dozens arrested after defying Amsterdam protest ban

Dutch police have arrested dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters in Amsterdam after they defied a demonstration ban put in place in the wake of clashes between Israeli football fans and groups of youths.

Earlier in the day, the Amsterdam District Court upheld a decision by the mayor to ban protests in the city, three days after it was rocked by violence between Maccabi Tel Aviv football fans and men on scooters in several areas of the city.

But hundreds of protesters nevertheless gathered in the city’s Dam square, holding up placards that said “We want our streets back” and chanting “Free Palestine”, an AFP correspondent saw.

Police in riot gear moved in on the protesters in the afternoon, shortly after the court upheld the ban on protests.

Dutch activist Frank van der Linde applied for an urgent permit to demonstrate on the city’s famous Dam Square, despite a temporary ban on protests announced by mayor Femke Halsema on Friday.

Van der Linde wanted to protest on the Dam against the “genocide in Gaza, but also because our right to protest has been taken away,” Dutch national news agency ANP quoted him as saying.

I'm glad I moved to Canada. Dutch politics and racism have only been getting worse since I moved. (Not that Canada isn't racist but at least it's recognized here and is getting addressed https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/combatting-racism-discrimination/canada-anti-racism-strategy.html )

France bans Palestinian flags for match against Israel

The head of the police in the French capital announced a ban on Palestinian flags at the Stade de France during the upcoming match between the French national team and its Israeli counterpart as part of the UEFA Nations League.

In an interview with French media, Laurent Nunez said: “There cannot be any politically motivated messages in the stadiums, including Palestinian flags. Only French and Israeli flags will be present in the stadium.”

The Paris police chief said more than 4,000 security personnel will be deployed, including 2,500 to secure the perimeter of the Stade de France and ensure no security issues arise similar to those in Amsterdam.

Like the Israeli flags are not politically motivated... Banning the Palestinian flag is not going to solve any problems.

Haaretz says Israel is carrying out ethnic cleansing in north Gaza

https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/editorial/2024-11-10/ty-article-opinion/netanyahus-ethnic-cleansing-is-on-display-for-all-to-see/00000193-12ac-d3a2-a3d7-5bed1d8d0000

The Israeli daily Haaretz has published an editorial accusing Netanyahu and the military of “conducting an ethnic cleansing operation in the northern Gaza Strip”.

“The few Palestinians remaining in the area are being forcibly evacuated, homes and infrastructure have been destroyed, and wide roads in the area are being built and completing the separation of the communities in the northern Strip from the center of Gaza City,” it wrote.

The editorial echoes statements by Palestinian officials, witnesses and journalists who have said Israel is waging a campaign of ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza, where civilians under constant bombardment are being denied the right to their homes, food, water, medical support and safe travel. They reject the military claims that its push, which began in early October, is simply aimed at closing in on Hamas fighters in the area.

Qatar’s withdrawal from Israel-Hamas negotiations a ‘tactical’ move

Tamer Qarmout, an associate professor of public policy at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, says Qatar’s decision to withdraw as a key mediator in ceasefire talks is a “tactical” move to “put pressure” on Israel and Hamas while also signalling Qatar’s “concern” over the new US administration.

“The Qataris have been in a very delicate position,” Qarmout told Al Jazeera, adding Republicans in the US have become more vocally critical of Qatar’s involvement.

“I think Qatar is increasingly concerned about this particular angle – being blackmailed or intimidated, both by certain elements within the US administration and by Israel as well,” he said.

“But at the same time, it’s not the end of the game for [Qatar],” said Qarmout. “They’re freezing [the negotiations], but that doesn’t mean that if the parties seek out Qatar to be involved again, it won’t be there to do this mission.”

Egypt expected to ‘remain active’ in Israel-Hamas negotiations

Tamer Qarmout, the associate professor from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, says despite Qatar’s decision to withdraw from Israel-Hamas negotiations, Egypt is expected to “remain active” albeit with a “less visible” role.

“At the political level, they may follow Qatar at some point,” he told Al Jazeera. “But the reality on the ground is that they will still have some open channels with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, because they know them and because they share geography with them.”

Qarmout added that due to its geographic proximity, Egypt has a “unique” connection to Gaza.

“It has more direct ties with the people on the ground since Egypt shares a border with Gaza,” he said.

UAE and Kuwait leaders meet, call for a ceasefire in Gaza: Report

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has arrived in Kuwait for talks with Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, as the leaders called for “mobilising international efforts” to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, the Emirati state news agency WAM reported.

The pair underscored the importance of halting “hostilities in Gaza, with a priority on ensuring full protection for civilians in line with international humanitarian law”.

They also reaffirmed “the steadfast stance of both countries in preserving Lebanon’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and their commitment to standing by the Lebanese people in all circumstances,” the news agency added.

Arab and Muslim leaders convene in Saudi Arabia to discuss wars in Gaza and Lebanon

Arab and Muslim leaders have begun arriving in Saudi Arabia for a summit scheduled for Monday that will focus on Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon, according to Saudi state media.

The Saudi state-run Al-Ekhbariya news channel broadcast footage of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati landing in Riyadh.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are among those also scheduled to attend.

The Saudi foreign ministry announced the summit in late October during the first “international alliance” meeting, pushing for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Attendees will “discuss the continued Israeli aggression on the Palestinian territories and the Lebanese Republic and the current developments in the region,” the official Saudi Press Agency said.

The summit comes one year after a similar gathering in Riyadh of the Cairo-based Arab League and the Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), during which leaders condemned Israeli actions in Gaza as “barbaric”.

However, there was disagreement over measures like severing economic and diplomatic ties with Israel and disrupting its oil supplies.

Incoming Israeli defence minister sets eyes on Iran

Gideon Saar has said that thwarting Iran’s nuclear program and preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons “are the most important things we must do”. Saar made his comments during the ceremony of the ministerial change between himself and Israel Katz – who has taken over the ministry of foreign affairs.

“I take the position of defence minister while understanding the things that are required, and the goals are very clear: Thwarting the Iranian nuclear program and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons are the most important things,” he said.

That's worded in a confusing way, Katz is the new defense minister replacing Gallant (fired). Saar is the new foreign affairs minister.
It fits with Netanyahu's forever war strategy, Iran is next if he can get Trump onboard.

Netanyahu says has spoken with Trump three times in past few days

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he has spoken with US President-elect Donald Trump three times in the past few days aimed at tightening the strong alliance between Israel and the United States.

“These were good and very important conversations,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “We see eye to eye on the Iranian threat in all its components, and the danger posed by it. We also see the great opportunities before Israel, in the field of peace and its expansion, and in other fields.”

Israel has ‘defeated’ Hezbollah: Defence minister

Israel has “defeated” Hezbollah, the country’s defence chief says, and eliminating its leader Hassan Nasrallah was the “crowning” achievement. Israel’s plan now is to “change the security reality in the north”, new Defence Minister Israel Katz said.

“The blows we inflicted defeated Hezbollah and the elimination of Nasrallah is the crowning jewel,” he said.

Katz added of Israel’s attack on Gaza: “We managed to maintain legitimacy and prevent decisions by international bodies and countries that asked us to stop the war unconditionally.”

The comments come as Hezbollah continues to fire rockets into Israel and Israeli ground forces struggle to take territory in southern Lebanon.

‘Ruins of life’: Aid worker describes scenes of destruction in north Gaza

Philippa Greer, the head of legal affairs at the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), posted footage from northern Gaza City showing the scale of destruction wrought by Israel’s war on the enclave.

The video, taken from a moving vehicle and posted on X, showed destroyed roads and buildings flattened and reduced to rubble.

Greer described seeing Palestinians struggling to carry their belongings in the sun, including “a man carrying a white flag in front of his family” and “women about to collapse, dragging bags over the ground, walking backwards, stopping and closing their eyes”.

Greer also said she saw “a man on the ground in underwear, with soldiers near the checkpoint” and “a woman presumably crossing with him, stalled, distraught, in desperation”.

Witnesses recount Israel’s attack on Gaza’s Al-Aqsa Hospital

We’ve been covering a deadly Israeli attack on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians on the grounds of Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah. Survivors said they had taken refuge in the hospital’s grounds hoping they would be safe there, but that they had been wrong.

“This is the eighth attack since I came here,” said Om Mohammed Wadi, a displaced Palestinian. “My tent, together with a lot of other tents, was burned three weeks ago. We are defenceless civilians. We are not terrorists. We are displaced people who want nothing but security and safety.”

A tent sheltering Palestinian reporters was also hit, wounding several.

“We were a tent full of journalists,” said Moustafa Jaarour. “I had left to interview a young girl and all of a sudden, a helicopter launched a missile without any warning. The missile targeted all these tents. Several of us journalists were injured.”
