Turkey slams Israeli ground offensive in south Lebanon

The Turkish Foreign Ministry says Israel’s ground offensive in Lebanon violates the country’s territorial sovereignty. The move is an illegal occupation attempt by Israel, a statement said, adding the operation must immediately end with Israeli forces withdrawing from Lebanon.

The UN Security Council must “do what is necessary” in line with international law, it said. It condemned Israel’s ground offensive in Lebanon as an “unlawful invasion attempt”.

“This attack must end as soon as possible and Israeli soldiers must withdraw from Lebanese territory,” the statement said.

Israeli forces tell residents of 25 villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate

The Israeli army has issued an “urgent” warning to residents of 25 villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate their homes immediately.

“The IDF [Israeli army] does not want to harm you, and for your own safety you must evacuate your homes immediately,” the statement posted on X said. “Any home used by Hezbollah for its military needs is expected to be targeted.”

It added that residents should immediately head north of the Awali River, some 60km (36 miles) from the border and much farther than the Litani River, which marks the northern edge of a UN-declared zone that was intended to serve as a buffer between Israel and Hezbollah after their war in 2006.

“Be careful, you are not allowed to go south. Going south could put your life in danger,” it said. “We will let you know when it is safe to return home.”

TV channel HQ in south Beirut destroyed in Israeli attack

Israeli fighter jets have attacked a television channel’s headquarters in Beirut, in what is described as the first targeting of a Lebanese media institution during the conflict. The late Monday attack levelled the building of the pro-Hezbollah As-Sirat TV channel in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Shortly before the attack, the Israeli army ordered staffers to leave, claiming the site was being used for producing “combat means”, according to Anadolu news agency. Hezbollah denied storing weapons inside civilian buildings, including the As-Sirat office.

No casualties were reported in the attack.

UNIFIL says Israel informed it before attacks, peacekeepers ‘in position’

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon says the Israeli army notified it of its intention to undertake a limited ground offensive into the country.

UNIFIL said in a statement that despite the developments, peacekeepers remain in position. It urged all actors to step back from escalatory acts.

“Any crossing into Lebanon is in violation of Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a violation of resolution 1701,” UNIFIL said.

UNSC’s Resolution 1701 ended the monthlong war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006 and called for a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, allowing the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers as the only armed forces south of the Litani River.

Peacekeepers have failed miserably. UNIFIL is useless.

Hezbollah denies Israeli troops crossed into Lebanon

Hezbollah has denied that Israeli forces crossed into southern Lebanon after Israel said its forces were carrying out “limited” raids there. “All Zionist claims that [Israeli] occupation forces have entered Lebanon are false,” Hezbollah media relations official Muhammad Afif told Al Jazeera.

He added there had “not yet been any direct ground clashes between [Hezbollah] resistance fighters and occupation forces”.

“Our fighters are ready to confront enemy forces that dare or attempt to enter Lebanon,” he said.

Israel, Lebanon telling ‘their versions of truth’ about ground offensive

Ori Goldberg, an Israeli political commentator and lecturer at Reichman University, says he doesn’t believe that Israel is lying about sending ground troops into Lebanon despite Hezbollah’s denial.

“It’s a grey area,” he told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv. “This isn’t an invasion force. This isn’t an expeditionary force. There are no tanks. There are no infantry troops. These are mostly commando units.”

Goldberg said it is possible that Israeli forces are likely focusing on known Hezbollah installations or similar targets.

“So, in that sense, if Hezbollah was expecting an invasion, then Hezbollah’s statements are correct. Israel, however, has been exactly saying that this is what the force is,” he said. “So both sides are telling their version of the truth.”

Israel defence minister briefs Pentagon chief on Lebanon assault

Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant says he spoke overnight with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on its ground offensive in southern Lebanon.

“We agreed on the importance of dismantling attack infrastructure along the northern border to prevent attacks by Hezbollah against Israeli citizens. I briefed the Secretary on the localized and targeted raids … against Hezbollah targets,” said Gallant.

“We also discussed ongoing threats posed by Iran and its proxies in Iraq, Yemen and Syria. Emphasized the importance of US force posture and the interoperability of US and Israeli defensive capabilities.”

Unleashed ‘monster’ must be stopped, Qatari minister says

Lolwah Alkhater, Qatar’s minister for international cooperation, has sharply criticised Israel’s attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.

“A monster has been unleashed in our region. A monster that uses prohibited weapons and methods that target civilians indiscriminately,” she wrote on X, referring to Israel.

She added that the “monster … didn’t adhere to a single decision by the Security Council” and violates international law daily.

“And yet, it continues to receive not only the blessings of some international actors, but also their weapons and taxpayers money. The Israeli Occupation EXCEPTIONALISM above international law MUST STOP,” she wrote.

“Unless we stand united to stop it, this military and political bullying will destroy the entire region.”

UN warns against ‘large-scale ground invasion’ in Lebanon

Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the UN rights office, has warned against a “large-scale ground invasion” of Lebanon.

“With armed violence between Israel and Hezbollah boiling over, the consequences for civilians have already been terrible,” she told reporters in Geneva. “We fear a large-scale ground invasion by Israel into Lebanon would only result in greater suffering,” Throssell said.

Before the ground assault, Israel’s escalating strikes on Lebanon reportedly killed more than 1,000 people in just two weeks, she added.

Spain insists Israel halt ground offensive into Lebanon

Israel should not conduct ground raids in southern Lebanon to avoid an escalation of the conflict, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares says.

“We insist that the ground incursion should be halted, as we’re receiving very worrying information,” Albares said, adding that it was “necessary to reach a truce in Lebanon and a ceasefire in Gaza”.

Albares also condemned Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israeli territory. He said the only way to achieve peace was if belligerents complied with international humanitarian law and respected the protections accorded to civilians.

Since February 2022, Spain has commanded the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and deployed 650 troops along the southern Lebanese border with Israel.

Israeli forces met ‘fierce resistance’ during late-night ground offensive

Ali Rizk, a security and political affairs analyst based in Beirut, says Israeli troops attempted to “overwhelm” Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon late last night but were repelled and forced to withdraw.

“What the Israeli side might be doing is a propaganda war when they speak about successfully entering Lebanese territory.  So this might be part of an Israeli psychological war, which wouldn’t be the first time they resort to such tactics,” Rizk told Al Jazeera.

“We’ll have to see how the ground invasion unfolds. But – according to a source with ties to Hezbollah –  the Israelis did meet fierce resistance in the late hours of last night. It does appear this is not going to be an easy battle for Israel, even if Hezbollah has lost its leader and senior military commanders. That still leaves Hezbollah to be a formidable foe to inflict heavy costs on the Israelis in their ground invasion.”

UK’s Lammy says Israel must avoid getting ‘bogged down’ in Lebanon

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has said that nobody wants a return to the past with Israel fighting in southern Lebanon over a long period, adding the price of a regional Middle Eastern war would be “huge”.

“None of us want to return to the years in which Israel found itself bogged down in a quagmire in southern Lebanon,” Lammy told broadcasters. “None of us want to see a regional war. The price would be huge for the Middle East and it would have a significant effect on the global economy.”

Hezbollah slams attack on Lebanese television channel

The group’s media relations office condemned the attack on the headquarters of as-Sirat TV channel in Beirut’s southern suburbs as “barbaric and destructive”. “We express our full solidarity with the institution, its management and its employees,” a statement on Telegram said.

Israel continues “its barbarism and aggression against all media institutions, starting with targeting journalists in Gaza and Lebanon”, it added. Hezbollah said Israel has acted “without any deterrent and without any regard for international laws and conventions”.

News reports earlier said the attack levelled the building, claiming it was used by Hezbollah for “combat means”. No casualties were reported. Hezbollah denies storing weapons inside civilian buildings.

Lebanon parliament speaker calls for UN air bridge for aid

Lebanon’s powerful parliament speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, called for a United Nations air bridge to expedite aid deliveries for almost one million people displaced by Israeli attacks.

Berri called on the UN to establish an “air bridge to ensure the delivery of relief supplies”, a statement issued by his office said. It also urged the international and Lebanese Red Cross to “carry out their duties in delivering relief and medical supplies to south Lebanon”.

Israeli army says dozens of rockets fired at northern areas from Lebanon

About 30 rockets were launched from Lebanon at northern Israel in the last few hours, an Israeli military statement says.

Some 15 were fired at the Upper Galilee region and sparked blazes after falling in open areas, it said, adding that firefighters were working to extinguish them.

Approximately 15 others were launched at the Western Galilee, also landing in open areas, the statement said.

There were no reports of casualties.

The army also said it conducted air raids on several buildings in Lebanon where it claimed Hezbollah stored weapons. Hezbollah denies storing weapons in civilian buildings.

Hundreds flee to southern Lebanon monastery to seek refuge from Israeli attacks

Local residents have told Reuters that at least 600 people sought refuge in a monastery on the Israel-Lebanon border after the Israeli army warned them to flee their Christian village of Ain Ebl.

The villagers went to the monastery in the town of Rmeish, which did not receive an Israeli warning, and were waiting for an army convoy to escort them to Beirut, the residents told the news agency.

An Israeli military spokesperson had earlier warned residents of Ain Ebl and at least 20 other towns to evacuate their homes immediately because the military said it would target homes that Hezbollah was allegedly using. The group denies using civilian facilities.

Israeli forces have carried out raids in Lebanon for months, military says

Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari says forces have been carrying out raids into southern Lebanon for months, uncovering Hezbollah tunnels and weapon caches under homes and uncovering invasion plans by the group.

Hagari said the details were being declassified, hours after Israel announced a ground operation against the Hezbollah movement in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has denied that Israel had started a ground operation.

Hagari said that the findings and evidence discovered under homes in villages in southern Lebanon during the raids will be presented to the international community.

They have better surveillance on Gaza and there all the 'evidence' turned out to be nonsense, like claiming a Calendar with the names of the days in Arabic in a school was a Hamas guard roster. Or that animation of Hamas HQ under Al Shifa which was never found.

I guess they learned from the best, "WMD in Iraq"

China ‘opposes infringements on Lebanon’s sovereignty’

China denounced “infringements on Lebanon’s sovereignty” after Israel said it launched a ground offensive against its neighbour.

“China … opposes infringements on Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, and opposes any actions that exacerbate conflicts and lead to a further escalation of the regional situation,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Israeli military calls up more reserve brigades

Israeli military says it was calling up four additional reserve brigades for operational missions on the northern border with Lebanon.

“This will enable the continuation of operational activity against the Hezbollah terrorist organisation and the achievement of operational goals, including the safe return of residents of northern Israel to their homes,” the military said in a statement.

Israel hits anti-aircraft radar stations in southern Syria: Report

Israel has struck at least three anti-aircraft radar stations in southern Syria, two unnamed Syrian military sources told the Reuters news agency.

The drone strikes hit two radar stations west of the city of Sweida, including one at an airbase in the area. Another hit a radar facility in the adjoining Deraa province.

They are part of the Syrian army’s air defences in the southern region, one of the sources added.

Is bombing self-defense equipment still self-defense? Israel is just striking out at everything around them.

‘Israel stuck in Gaza – same might happen now in Lebanon’

Israeli columnist Gideon Levy says Israel is at the first stage of its ground operation in Lebanon.

“Israel called more and more villages to be evacuated quite far from the border. It is clear that Israel is preparing a ground operation,” Levy said, but added it isn’t clear how far or how long it will take place.

Levy said Israel’s operation could become “complicated”.

“Look at Gaza. Israel is stuck in Gaza without any clue how and when it will get out of Gaza,” he said. “The same might happen now in Lebanon.”

‘World is passive, so Israel feels it can go on’

Gideon Levy reminded that Israel, in its two major wars it fought previously inside Lebanon, “always started in a very limited way, very limited scale”.

“I’m very afraid that it will repeat itself now, and that [the situation in] Gaza will happen in Lebanon,” Levy told Al Jazeera.

He said Israel is motivated by its recent military successes, such as the assassination of Hezbollah leaders including Hassan Nasrallah and the explosions of pagers and walkie-talkies.

“The world is totally passive, so Israel feels that it can go on,” Levy warned. “I think nothing is going to stop Israel from going on and this will cost the lives of many people, obviously.”

Air raid reported on southern Beirut

We’re getting reports of a new air attack on the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut.

Israeli air attacks on Lebanon ‘more extensive and intensive’

Just a short while ago, there was another Israeli air strike near Dahiyeh, the southern suburb of Beirut. It’s still unclear what the target was and if this was another assassination of a Hezbollah commander. But what is clear is that this is not stopping.

Israel continues to attack various points within the country, not just in the southern parts of the capital. And these kinds of Israeli attacks are becoming more extensive and intensive across Lebanon.

Israeli air raid hits near Beirut hospital

We have some more information on the latest air attack on the Lebanese capital.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) said the Israeli air raids hit two areas of south Beirut. NNA reported a “violent enemy strike” that targeted a building in Jnah, near the Zahraa Hospital in the Dahiyeh neighbourhood and fewer than 500 metres (1,640 feet) from a shelter housing thousands of displaced people.

Minutes later, Israeli fighter jets hit a building near the Kuwaiti Embassy. The Israeli military said it conducted “a precise strike in Beirut”, without immediately offering further details.

KLM suspends Israel flights until year-end

The Dutch national carrier has extended a suspension of flights to Israel until the end of the year, citing the deteriorating situation in the region. “Given the situation in the region we’ve decided to extend a suspension of flights to Tel Aviv until the end of the year,” KLM spokesperson Elvira van der Vis said.

Air France, Flydubai, Emirates, Iran Air, Air Algerie and Turkish Airlines are some other airlines that have temporarily suspended flights to the region.

Erdogan says Turkey will stand by Lebanon

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey would support Lebanon with all its means after Israel launched raids as part of a “limited” ground incursion.

“We will never leave our Lebanese brothers on their own in these difficult days and will support them with all our means,” Erdogan said in a speech at the reopening of the Turkish parliament following its summer recess.

US Embassy in Israel tells staff, families ‘to shelter in place’

The United States Embassy in Israel has just issued a statement directing all US “government employees and their family members to shelter in place until further notice”.

The security alert came after a White House official said that the US had indications that Iran was preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel.

‘Reckless’ Biden administration gave Israel ‘blank check to light region on fire’: US NGO

Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), a non-profit organisation based in Washington, DC, has called Israel’s ground attack on Lebanon “the entirely predictable consequence of the Biden administration’s ceaseless coddling and resupply of weapons to Israel”.

In a statement, Sarah Leah Whitson, DAWN’s executive director, said that the administration of US President Joe Biden “has acted recklessly in giving Israel a blank check to light the entire region on fire”.

The group said that the US should be using its leverage to advance diplomatic solutions that prioritise civilian lives “over endless conflict”.

“A ceasefire in Lebanon will be impossible without first securing a ceasefire in Gaza,” said Raed Jarrar, DAWN’s advocacy director. “Hezbollah and other armed groups have explicitly tied their actions to the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza,” said Jarrar, “so there is no hope of de-escalating the situation in Lebanon while allowing Israel to continue its atrocities in Gaza.”

Belgian foreign ministry says citizens should leave Lebanon: Report

Belgian citizens should leave Lebanon as soon as possible, the Belgian foreign ministry told Belga news agency.

“We still advise Belgian citizens to register on TravellersOnline or at the embassy in Beirut, and to leave Lebanon as soon as possible,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said earlier today.

However, by this afternoon, Belga news agency reported, it was clear that no tickets were available for these flights.

Turkey working with 20 countries in Lebanon evacuation preparations

Ankara is ready to carry out a possible evacuation of Turks from Lebanon via air and sea, according to a Foreign Ministry statement. The ministry also said the country is working with about 20 countries on preparing for a possible evacuation of foreign nationals via Turkey.

It said the security conditions in Lebanon could deteriorate, as Israel launched a ground incursion into south Lebanon. The ministry added a coordination centre had been set up to handle evacuation requests in line with the plans made by Turkish institutions.

US has indications Iran preparing imminent missile attack on Israel: White House official

A senior White House official has told Al Jazeera that the United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel. “We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack,” the official said.

“A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran.”

The official did not immediately offer any evidence backing the claim. Iran has promised to avenge the killing of Nasrallah and Abbas Nilforoushan, a top commander of its Quds Force, who was killed alongside the Hezbollah leader on Friday.

Iran ‘unaffected by all the noise’

The Iranian embassy in Lebanon has issued a statement addressing the events in Lebanon.

“The Lebanese people are aware and can fully distinguish between their friends who stood by them in the darkest of circumstances, and those who provide cover for their enemy to besiege and target them,” it said.

“We heard allegations about Iran abandoning support for the resistance before during the July 2006 war and they were buried at the time after the facts and data were revealed.

“This time as well, the influential role of Iran will become more and more clear to the world when the star of victory over Zionist terrorism shines,” it added.

“It is enough to review Netanyahu’s statements, especially at the United Nations, and his mention of Iran dozens of times, to realise its fundamental role in protecting and supporting the resistance,” the statement continued.

“Iran is continuing its approach steadfastly, unaffected by all the noise that is happening.”

Israeli army spokesperson says an Iran attack would have repercussions

Daniel Hagari says Israel and its allies are in a high state of readiness and any attack from Iran would have repercussions.

His statement came shortly after a senior White House official warned that the US had indications that Iran was preparing to launch an imminent ballistic missile attack against Israel.

Hagari said Israeli air defence systems are fully prepared for any attack from Iran but no threat has been identified at present.

Israel preparing after White House warning of possible Iran attack

There are preparations being made in Israel. The Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said that they received a message from their American counterparts, but that they didn’t detect any aerial threats or preparations from the Iranians just yet based on their own intelligence.

But Hagari did go on to say that if Iran were to attack Israel similarly to how they attacked in April when they launched nearly 350 ballistic cruise missiles and drones into Israeli territorial air space, they say they are prepared with their air defences and that there would be consequences.

At the same time,  Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant is currently meeting with the army chief of staff, according to reports from Israeli media, [and] they’re discussing this threat – how to combat it, and other measures to put in place.

There have been new Home Front Command guidelines that have been issued by the military and the government, putting restrictions on gatherings. Staff at the US embassy have been ordered to shelter in place, and politicians are speaking about unity at a time like this.

Missile lands near Tel Aviv

Israeli Army Radio is reporting that a “missile launched from Lebanon” exploded in an open area near Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv.

Segments of Israeli public, media raised the idea of attacking Iran

The Israeli public has been “drunk on euphoria” over the success of recent intelligence and military operations in Lebanon, including the explosion of thousands of pagers, Menachem Klein, of the Department of Political Science at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, told Al Jazeera.

That, he said, has led to some segments of the public and the media discussing whether Israel should “seize the moment” and raise the option of attacking “the Iranian nuclear project”.

However, he added that the state of emergency that has been declared in the country may have tempered that euphoria, adding that public movement in Israel will be limited just as the country heads into the start of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

It’s a move that Klein assumes the Israeli government and the military would not have taken during a religious holiday without a very good reason.

Israeli army says potential Iranian attack to be on wide scale

We have some more comments from Daniel Hagari, the Israeli army spokesperson, who says a possible missile attack from Iran is likely to be on a wide scale. Speaking to reporters, he said Israel is following the threat “seriously” and asked the public to follow the guidelines of the Home Front Command.
