US has indications Iran preparing imminent missile attack on Israel: White House official
A senior White House official has told Al Jazeera that the United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel. “We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack,” the official said.
“A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran.”
The official did not immediately offer any evidence backing the claim. Iran has promised to avenge the killing of Nasrallah and Abbas Nilforoushan, a top commander of its Quds Force, who was killed alongside the Hezbollah leader on Friday.
Iran ‘unaffected by all the noise’
The Iranian embassy in Lebanon has issued a statement addressing the events in Lebanon.
“The Lebanese people are aware and can fully distinguish between their friends who stood by them in the darkest of circumstances, and those who provide cover for their enemy to besiege and target them,” it said.
“We heard allegations about Iran abandoning support for the resistance before during the July 2006 war and they were buried at the time after the facts and data were revealed.
“This time as well, the influential role of Iran will become more and more clear to the world when the star of victory over Zionist terrorism shines,” it added.
“It is enough to review Netanyahu’s statements, especially at the United Nations, and his mention of Iran dozens of times, to realise its fundamental role in protecting and supporting the resistance,” the statement continued.
“Iran is continuing its approach steadfastly, unaffected by all the noise that is happening.”
Israeli army spokesperson says an Iran attack would have repercussions
Daniel Hagari says Israel and its allies are in a high state of readiness and any attack from Iran would have repercussions.
His statement came shortly after a senior White House official warned that the US had indications that Iran was preparing to launch an imminent ballistic missile attack against Israel.
Hagari said Israeli air defence systems are fully prepared for any attack from Iran but no threat has been identified at present.
