Delta, American Airlines extend suspension of flights to Israel

Delta Air Lines has extended the suspension of its flights between cities in the US and Israel by another month, through October 31, citing “the evolving security environment” as the war on Gaza grinds on.

The announcement came after American Airlines also extended the suspension of its flights between the US and Israel’s Tel Aviv through March 29 of next year.

Both airlines said customers with tickets on flights that will now be cancelled can rebook, generally at no extra charge, or cancel their trip and get a refund.

China urges citizens to leave Lebanon

China has urged its citizens in Lebanon to leave “as soon as possible” after an Israeli attack killed a senior leader of Palestinian group Fatah in the city of Sidon on Wednesday morning.

“Recently, the situation on the Lebanese-Israeli border has continued to be tense, and security circumstances in Lebanon are severe and complex,” China’s embassy in Beirut said.

The statement advised Chinese citizens in Lebanon to “take the opportunity while commercial flights are still running to return to China or leave the country as soon as possible”.

Multiple countries have already advised their citizens to leave the country amid rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.

Rashida Tlaib says Palestinians ‘deserve to be heard’ at DNC

The Palestinian-American member of Congress made the remark amid reports that families of Israeli captives would be addressing the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago from its main stage.

“Why are you saying that Israeli children are more valuable than Palestinian children? Where is our shared humanity?” Tlaib, a Democrat, wrote in a post tagging the DNC.

“Stop erasing Palestinians. We exist. We deserve to be heard,” she added.

Tlaib was quoting a post from the Uncommitted National Movement, which said it had learned that the families of Israeli captives will be speaking at the DNC.

“We strongly support that decision and also strongly hope that we will also be hearing from Palestinians who’ve endured the largest civilian death toll since 1948,” the movement said.

Seven-year-old Baraa Haj Sulman, who was injured in Rafah and lost his father and grandfather, joined a protest in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention [DNC] in Chicago on Wednesday

People have protested against the Democratic Party leadership’s support and funding for Israel’s war on Gaza, both inside and outside the DNC all week.

Democrats reject request for Palestinian-American speaker at convention

Abbas Alawieh, an “Uncommitted” delegate from Michigan, has called on the Democratic Party to reconsider its decision to bar Palestinian-Americans from speaking at its ongoing convention in Chicago.

The decision on Wednesday came even as the parents of Israeli-American captive, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, addressed delegates from the convention’s main stage.

Alawieh said he was moved by the words of Goldberg-Polin’s parents, who called for a ceasefire to return the Israeli captives held by Hamas in Gaza, and said the movement’s main goal remained organising for a truce.

“It’s very simple: You stop sending bombs, the bombs stop dropping,” he told reporters.

The Uncommitted movement’s request to have their voice heard at the DNC attracted high-profile supporters, including actor Mark Ruffalo and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, who penned an article in Vanity Fair questioning why there was no room for Palestinian-American voices in the Democrat’s so-called “big tent”.

‘There’s nothing to celebrate’: Gaza protests continue around DNC

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/8/22/theres-nothing-to-celebrate-gaza-protests-continue-around-dnc

“Just like 1968, there’s nothing to celebrate.”

Palestinian rights protesters see plenty of parallels between the current Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the last time the gathering was held in the Windy City amid a violent crackdown on anti-Vietnam War protesters.

Just as Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey lost the 1968 race to Richard Nixon, the demonstrators are warning Kamala Harris that they will not support her unless she ends the United States’s unconditional support for Israel.

Wednesday was the third day of the convention and the third day of the Gaza protests. “DNC your hands are red, over 40,000 dead,” the protesters chanted as they waved Palestinian flags while marching in the streets.

Protests in support of Palestinians in Gaza continued for a third day outside the DNC on Wednesday

Third day of demonstrations against war on Gaza in Chicago

As we’ve been reporting, hundreds of pro-Palestine activists protested in Chicago on the third day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), calling for the party to push for an end to the war in Gaza.

Democratic loyalists, including several party delegates, shared their message.

“We need meaningful policy change,” said June Rose, a DNC delegate, at a Wednesday news conference. “We need an immediate and permanent ceasefire, and an arms embargo, which means not one more bomb will be provided from the United States to kill children and families in Gaza.”

Pro-Palestine protesters call out Harris outside Chicago hotel

Pro-Palestine activists have staged a late-night protest outside a Chicago hotel where they believe Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is staying.

Footage posted to social media, verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency, shows dozens of the protesters congregating on the streets of Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, holding signs and shouting slogans denouncing Harris for her stance on the Gaza war.

“Killer Kamala, shame on you” and “Free, free Palestine”, chanted the protesters, before police can be seen pushing them away from the hotel.

Harris, who currently serves as vice president, is set to deliver an acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for president today to close out the Democratic National Convention.

During the event, as we’ve reported, hundreds of pro-Palestine activists have held demonstrations, demanding the party push for an end to the Gaza war and for the US to stop arming Israel.

Gaza protesters in Chicago blocked on day 3 of DNC

Pro-Palestine protesters kept up the pressure on day three of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Wednesday, even as the police blocked their path outside the United Center venue.

Families of Israeli captives slam Netanyahu’s handling of truce talks

“The full and direct responsibility for the fate of the negotiations is on the prime minister. His incessant attempts to blame the negotiation teams, the mediators, the press, the hostages’ families and even the hostages themselves – these all throw sand in the eyes of the public and the entire world.

“The prime minister is the authority and therefore he is responsible. If he is so successful at conducting negotiations, as he describes himself to be, he should fly out himself and act to return the hostages that were abandoned on his watch and for ten months since.”

Haaretz editor says Netanyahu’s goal is ‘creeping occupation’ of Gaza

Aluf Benn said in an editorial that the Israeli prime minister is “torpedoing” ceasefire negotiations because he ultimately wants a “prolonged occupation of the Gaza Strip”.

“Caravan after caravan, outpost after outpost” Netanyahu is planning a “creeping occupation” of Gaza, Benn said, adding that the Israeli prime minister’s recent insistence on maintaining Israeli control of “defense and strategic assets”, such as the Philadelphi and Netzarim corridors illustrates his intentions.

The editorial came as the families of Israeli captives held in Gaza criticised Netanyahu’s handling of the truce talks, saying the “full and direct responsibility for the fate of the negotiations is on the prime minister”.

Next ’48 hours’ important for ceasefire deal, says former Egyptian official

Hussein Haridi, former Egyptian assistant foreign minister and former ambassador, says that “in principle,” all parties are in agreement on the ceasefire deal, but “differences in opinion remain”.

“There are some disagreements definitely between the Israelis and Hamas’s people, but we believe these differences are reachable. So we are waiting for the next 48 hours to see whether the technical teams negotiating the details would succeed in bringing to fruition and bringing to the finish line this agreement,” Haridi told Al Jazeera.

He added that Netanyahu realises that the US is in the midst of presidential elections and “is making the most of it to score gains with his ruling coalition”.

“As a matter of fact, the statements that come out, either of his office or the statements he makes, are for these far-right extremists … in his ruling coalition,” Haridi said.

Biden and Harris need ceasefire deal to secure ‘public opinion’, says Haridi

Hussein Haridi, former Egyptian assistant foreign minister, says Israel is “losing economically (and) financially” and the Palestinians are “suffering”, so it’s in the interest of everyone to secure a ceasefire deal.

“We all hope that the negotiating teams can reach an agreement, but … I guess the American administration would keep pushing for a deal for two reasons. The first one, of course, the (President Joe) Biden administration and (Vice President) Kamala Harris need a ceasefire agreement in place in Gaza in order to sell it to the American public opinion,” Haridi told Al Jazeera.

He added that the second reason why the US needs a ceasefire deal to be agreed upon is due to a fear that if it’s not approved, it could “open the door for the retaliation (on Israel from) Iran and Hezbollah”.

US aircraft carrier group arrives in the Middle East

The US Central Command said the USS Abraham Lincoln Aircraft Carrier Strike Group, which is equipped with F-35 fighter jets and a destroyer squadron, has arrived in its area of responsibility.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the carrier strike group to hasten its journey to the Middle East earlier in August as tensions rose in the region as Iran threatened to launch a retaliatory attack against Israel over the assassination of Hamas’s political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

At the time, Austin said the carrier strike group would be adding to the capabilities already provided by the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.

He also announced the deployment of a guided missile submarine to the region.

This is a deeply complex issue that speaks to the long-standing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, which elicits strong emotions on both sides. Rashida Tlaib's remarks reflect the frustration that many Palestinians and their supporters feel about being underrepresented or overlooked in conversations about the conflict, particularly in political settings such as the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

Her message highlights a call for equal recognition of suffering, emphasizing that the lives and voices of Palestinian civilians, especially children, should also be acknowledged alongside those of Israelis. This sentiment is rooted in a desire for shared humanity and the need to ensure that all perspectives and experiences, particularly from communities facing significant loss, are heard.

While addressing the suffering of Israeli captives is important, Tlaib's argument is that Palestinian civilians—who have also experienced tremendous loss, especially in recent years—should not be erased from the narrative. By advocating for their inclusion at the DNC, she is asking for a more balanced and equitable approach to how these issues are represented on the world stage.

This is a sensitive and controversial topic, and Tlaib's words will undoubtedly resonate differently with various individuals based on their perspectives on the conflict. However, her core message appears to be a call for broader empathy and inclusivity when discussing such deeply personal and painful experiences.

Widespread destruction in Tulkarem as Israeli raid continues

The Israeli raid on the Tulkarem refugee camp in the occupied West Bank has resulted in widespread destruction to infrastructure and private property, Wafa reports, quoting local sources.

Faisal Salama, head of the Popular Committee for Tulkarem Refugee Camp Services, told Wafa that the situation in the camp is dire with extensive damage to streets and infrastructure, including sewage systems, water, electricity and communications.

Salama added that Israeli forces have cut off the camp from its surroundings by blocking entrances and bulldozing streets.

Israeli forces also demolished the wall of a health clinic operated by the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency and the perimeter wall of al-Awda Hall .

At the same time, the Palestine Red Crescent Society’s director of emergency medical services in Tulkarem reported that the ongoing obstructions had forced its medical personnel to remain at the camp’s edges despite receiving reports of injuries from inside the camp.

Three Palestinians killed in Israeli strike on Tulkarem camp

Three Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli air attack on a house in the Tulkarem refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Ministry of Health says.

The aerial attack today came as the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, said fighters from its Tulkarem Battalion clashed with Israeli soldiers in the camp and detonated explosive devices targeting military vehicles.

Reporting from Tulkarem, Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim said on Thursday that the raid was ongoing 12 hours later in the congested area, with sounds of explosives and gunfire heard and drones flying above.

Israeli army wraps up 14-hour raid on Tulkarem, occupied West Bank

The Israeli army says it killed three “terrorists” and destroyed two weapons manufacturing workshops in its raid on the camp. Earlier, we reported on an Israeli air strike on the camp that killed three Palestinians.

It also claimed that the army, border police and Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic intelligence service, arrested more than 40 “wanted individuals” this week.

Attacks in the West Bank have surged since October 7, with Israeli forces killing more than 600 Palestinians in the occupied territory, including 144 children, while more than 10,000 Palestinians have been arrested.

Two people killed in Israeli attack on Deir el-Balah school

An Al Jazeera correspondent reports that the two Palestinians have been killed by an Israeli drone that targeted a school sheltering displaced people near the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah.

Israel’s military offensive on the city in central Gaza continues to rage.

One person killed in Israeli attack on Gaza City

Gaza’s Civil Defence says a Palestinian has been killed on as-Sikka Street, east of the Zeitoun neighbourhood in Gaza City. It said a group of people was shelled by Israeli artillery.

Israeli army announces new evacuation order in south

The Israeli spokesperson for Arabic language media has announced a new evacuation order for the Gaza Strip.

Residents were warned to evacuate several areas in Khan Younis governorate in southern Gaza, including Bani Suheila, Sheikh Nasser, Barbakh and as-Satr al-Gharbi, Avichay Adraee posted on X.

The order comes after thousands of Palestinians fled parts of Deir el-Balah as the Israeli military issued an evacuation order and its forces advanced deeper into the overcrowded central Gaza city.

The Israeli military has targeted areas it had designated as safe zones on several occasions previously, killing Palestinians taking refuge there.

Translation: To all those present in the Bani Suheila area and the Sheikh Nasser, Barbakh, as-Satr, Maan, city centre, station and battalion neighborhoods in blocks 41, 42, 44, 45, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 103, 104, 105, 218, 219, 220.

For your own safety, evacuate immediately and move to the humanitarian zone.

Palestinians fleeing Deir el-Balah as Israeli forces attack

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum says residents of Deir el-Balah are now looking for new areas to flee to after Israeli forces pushed deeper into the city in central Gaza.

“The Israeli army is starting a new military incursion in the eastern areas, with residents in certain blocks asked to flee to the western parts,” he reported.

“We have seen families since yesterday morning until now who are fleeing from these areas. The cars are loaded with basic furniture … and they are looking for any empty space of land in order to set up their tents, despite the lack of any humanitarian aid, including food and water.”

Moreover, Abu Azzoum said, Israeli army operations were not only taking place in central Gaza but continued “to expand to the northern and southern parts” of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli raid in central Gaza leads to casualties: Civil defence

An unknown number of people have been injured as a result of an Israeli attack on a barracks belonging to the al-Zaq family on Salah al-Din Street, east of Nuseirat camp.

The attack comes after thousands of Palestinians fled parts of Deir el-Balah following a new evacuation order, as the Israeli military advanced deeper into the overcrowded central Gaza city.

Israeli soldier killed in southern Gaza

The Israeli military has announced the death of 19-year-old Ori Ashkenazi Nechemya, who it said was killed in battle in southern Gaza. Nechemya, from Ashkelon, was a soldier in the 401st Brigade’s 46th Battalion, and was killed by an anti-tank missile.

Israel has acknowledged the death of more than 330 of its soldiers since its ground invasion of Gaza began on October 27.

Hamas and other Palestinian groups have retained the capability to attack Israeli forces, despite several months of Israeli bombing that has decimated the Gaza Strip.

US envoy tells UN Security Council Gaza ceasefire drawing closer

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield tells the Security Council that a ceasefire and captive release deal “now is in sight” as she urges the 15-member body to press Hamas to accept a bridging proposal.

“It’s a decisive moment for ceasefire talks and for the region, and so every member of this council should continue to send strong messages to other actors in the region to avoid actions that would move us away from finalising this deal,” she said.

Parents of captive urge DNC to push for a ceasefire in Gaza

The parents of an Israeli captive held by Hamas have called for a deal to return all the captives in Gaza during a speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in the US on Wednesday.

John and Rachel Goldberg, the parents of Hersh Goldberg, spoke of their son being taken by Hamas from the Nova Music Festival on October 7.

In her speech, Rachel Goldberg urged Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris and other US officials to finalise a ceasefire to stop the war and return the captives.

“This is a political agreement, but the need for our only son and all the dear hostages to return home is not a political issue. It is a humanitarian issue,” she told the DNC in Chicago.

John Goldberg reiterated the call for a deal and said, “Hersch, if you can hear us, we love you, stay strong and keep you alive.”

Israeli delegation arrives in Cairo for ceasefire talks: Report

That’s according to the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation. The US Secretary of State had confirmed that the talks would resume today, after a US “bridging proposal” was reportedly agreed to by Israel at talks in Doha last week.

Hamas has not directly participated in the talks and has urged the adoption of a previous ceasefire proposal announced by US President Joe Biden at the end of May. The Palestinian group has said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not serious about an end to the war and the release of captives held in Gaza.

Cairo talks to focus on Egypt-Gaza border: Report

The talks between Egyptian, Israeli and US officials will focus on the border as Israel demands that it maintain a military presence in the Philadelphi Corridor – the name used for the stretch of land along the border, the US news website Axios reports.

Egypt has rejected any long-term Israeli presence there, seeing it as a security threat. Hamas has also demanded the Israelis withdraw from the area, which Israeli forces captured in late May. The Palestinian group has insisted that a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza – including the Philadelphi Corridor – be part of any ceasefire deal.

The issue is a major sticking point, and Axios reports that Biden urged Netanyahu to be “flexible” on the issue during the talks.

War will continue, even with a deal: Israeli official

An Israeli official told The Times of Israel that a ceasefire deal would not mean the end of the war in Gaza.

“So long as Hamas doesn’t agree to a deal, we will continue fighting,” the official was quoted as saying. “Even if they do, the war will continue. Of course, if there is a deal, there will be a lull in the fighting in the first stage. But we will continue fighting until we achieve all of our war aims.”

The insistence on the war continuing echoes the words of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has himself insisted that any ceasefire deal still allow the Israelis to continue to attack Gaza, despite the US insistence that a deal would lead to an end to the war.

Hamas has repeatedly stated that any deal to secure the release of captives held in Gaza lead to a lasting ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the enclave.

Netanyahu denies agreeing to international force along Egypt-Gaza border

“Prime Minister Netanyahu insists on the principle that Israel will control the Philadelphi Corridor to prevent the rearmament of Hamas, which would allow them to repeat the atrocities of Oct[ober] 7,” a statement from Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has said.

Reports had suggested that Israel had agreed to the presence of an international force in the area. The Israelis are insistent that its forces retain a presence on the border, despite opposition from Egypt and Hamas.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield is flat out lying to the UNSC, a deal is not anywhere near close. Israel continues to make sure a deal only gets further out of reach. All the US is doing is propaganda, trying to make it about Hamas that stands in the way of a deal, while Netanyahu is actively undermining even those efforts. The bridging proposal is a non starter, nothing like Biden's ceasefire proposal he claimed Israel accepted.

I don't get what the US is playing at. Even if Hamas caves in to a humanitarian pause, exchange some Israeli hostages for Palestinian hostages (who will just be rounded up again) and very much needed Polio vaccinations, the war will be on again well before November.

More evidence of war crimes will come out as well during a pause. The only 'win' for Biden and Harris would be a permanent ceasefire which is pretty much written out of the bridging proposal.

Head of Israeli domestic intelligence clashes with far-right Minister Ben-Gvir over ‘Jewish terror’ in West Bank

Israeli media outlet Channel 12 reports that the head of the Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, has sent a letter to Netanyahu accusing National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and other members of his coalition government of directly and indirectly encouraging attacks by ultranationalist Jews on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Bar warned that recent attacks, such as on the village of Jit on Friday that killed one Palestinian, has left the country on the brink of disaster.

The Shin Bet director used the term “Jewish terror” in his letter, referring to the phenomenon of attacks being carried out openly by large groups. Ben-Gvir is reported to have reacted angrily to the letter, demanding during a meeting that Bar be dismissed before leaving angrily.

The minister is a former follower of the far-right ideologue Meir Kahane and has a history of supporting the supremacy of Jewish people over Palestinians.

PA security forces detain former Palestinian prisoner: Reports

Palestinian media outlets have reported that Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces have detained Ayham Aqel in Nablus. Aqel was previously a prisoner held by Israel. It’s unclear why he has been detained by the PA.

Israel’s Channel 12 had previously reported that PA security forces have been carrying out a campaign to remove explosive devices planted by Palestinian fighters in the occupied West Bank over the past few days, destroying 15 in Jenin alone.

As part of the Oslo Accords agreed between Israel and the Palestinians in the 1990s, the PA participates in “security coordination” with the Israelis, which involves arresting Palestinians considered to be security threats. The PA is heavily criticised by many Palestinians for this cooperation with Israel.

Israeli troops storm area near occupied East Jerusalem

We are getting reports from our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues that Israeli troops have stormed the Kafr Aqab neighbourhood located just north of the occupied East Jerusalem.

Several military vehicles were seen entering the area.

The latest operation came shortly after the Israeli military wrapped up a 14-hour raid in the West Bank city of Tulkarem, during which three Palestinians were killed in a drone strike.

Released Gaza captive declines Netanyahu ‘PR’ meeting

Margalit Moses, a 77-year-old Israeli who was freed from captivity in Gaza in November, has declined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s invitation to meet him today, saying she believes it would be a publicity stunt.

“Thank you for the invitation, but I will not take part in the meeting for photography and public relations purposes while my friends are languishing in the Hamas tunnels in Gaza,” she wrote in a public statement.

“In light of the reports of another [hostage-ceasefire] deal being thwarted on your part to release the abductees, I see no reason to come to a meeting with someone who proves by his actions that releasing the hostages is not top of mind and abandons them to their deaths,” she added.

Moses was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz along with her ex-husband Gadi Moshe Moses during the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7. Gadi remains in captivity in Gaza.

Pro-Palestine protester says won’t vote for Kamala Harris if election held today

One protester and “uncommitted” voter at the protest in Chicago, Sidney Larier, says he is disillusioned with the Democratic Party’s stance on Israel’s war on Gaza, adding that he would not vote for Vice President Kamala Harris if the election were held today.

“I want to be clear, though I am persuadable. I do recognise the reality of two-party politics in America, and I do want to defeat Donald Trump. I clearly see what that threat represents,” Larier, who is from Pennsylvania, told Al Jazeera.

“But again, I cannot prioritise the needs of myself when I see what is being carried out in our name, with our tax dollars.” Larier said Harris should publicly endorse a ceasefire, and especially an arms embargo on Israel.

“If they won’t see the moral argument, at least see the electoral argument – that they can and will win this election in a landslide if they’re able to pull off a ceasefire. If they cannot, I’m very sceptical of what they might be able to accomplish in November.”

Deaths, injuries as Israeli military continues assault on Gaza

The Wafa news agency reports several Israeli military attacks across the Gaza Strip in recent hours. They include:

  • Three bodies, including one of a child, have arrived at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, following an Israeli strike on a gathering in the town of Abasan, east of Khan Younis.
  • Several people were injured following Israeli artillery shelling at the Bani Suheila roundabout, east of Khan Younis.
  • One person was killed following Israeli shelling targeting the Mufti area north of the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza.
  • Israeli forces shot and injured a child in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza.
  • One person was killed and a number of others injured following an Israeli air strike on a gathering east of the Zeitoun neighbourhood in Gaza City, northern Gaza.
  • Several people were also injured after the Israeli military bombed a house in the al-Shimaa area in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza.

Israeli artillery shelling reported in Khan Younis and Nuseirat

We are getting reports from our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues in Gaza of a new round of Israeli artillery shelling in the central area of the city of Khan Younis in the southern part of the Palestinian territory. Israeli artillery shelling was also reported on the northern side of the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza.

Child among those killed in overnight Israeli strike in southern Gaza: Report

At least four Palestinians, including a child, were killed and several others injured overnight following one of several Israeli air attacks on two civilian gatherings in southern Gaza.

Citing medical sources at Nasser Hospital, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the bodies of three victims, including a child, were brought to the facility after a gathering in the town of Abasan was hit.

In addition, one person was killed and others injured in a separate Israeli air attack on the Zeitoun neighbourhood in Gaza City.

Car struck in Khan Younis, killing 4

An Israeli attack has hit a car in the southeastern part of Khan Younis, killing at least four people, report our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic and the Palestinian Civil Defence in Gaza.

Meanwhile, people have been injured from artillery strikes to the north of Nuseirat refugee camp, they report.

Casualties reported in Israeli strike on Nuseirat refugee camp

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic, citing medical sources, report that four people have been killed and many others injured in an attack on a residential home in Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

Fast facts: Nuseirat refugee camp

It was established in the aftermath of the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1948 that led to the creation of Israel. Before Israel’s war on Gaza, it had been densely populated, home to 85,409 Palestine refugees registered with UNRWA.

The camp has been the target of Israeli raids and attacks since the start of the war. Here are just some:

  • On October 18, the Grand Nuseirat Mosque was mostly destroyed.
  • On March 17, 36 members of the Tabatibi family were killed in an Israeli air strike.
  • On April 11, the Israeli army launched its first ground operation into the camp, attacking two mosques, a UN-run school and the Malaysian school, killing at least four people.
  • On April 12, Sami Shehadeh, a journalist with Turkish broadcaster TRT, had his foot amputated after being wounded in an Israeli attack there.
  • On June 6, the mayor of Nuseirat, Iyad al-Maghari, was killed in an Israeli raid, and 40 people were killed in the Israeli air attack on a UN-run school in Nuseirat, according to the director of Gaza’s Government Media Office.
  • On June 8, the Nuseirat massacre took place when Israeli forces killed at least 274 Palestinians to free four Israeli captives.
  • On June 18, Local media reported at least 17 deaths in the Nuseirat refugee camp following a night of heavy Israeli bombardment.
  • On July 14, Israeli forces killed at least 17 people after it struck the UN-run Abu Oraiban school sheltering displaced Palestinians in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

Fighting ‘rages’ between Israeli forces, Hamas in Deir el-Balah

Israeli forces are now in Deir el-Balah city. They are operating in the eastern area, while Palestinian families are trapped in the western side.

Horrific bombardment took place overnight and into the early hours of the morning. We continue to hear loud explosions now and then. We also hear the sound of Israeli drones every hour. The fighting is really raging between Hamas fighters and Israeli forces in eastern areas of the city.

We’ve also heard that the Israeli army is now operating in the city of Khan Younis, 19 blocks of which have been told to evacuate. Their residents are now heading to the western side of Khan Younis, close to al-Mawasi.

Everyone is exhausted, trapped in a very small patch of land. They have a growing sense of frustration each day as the fighting continues.

Soldier killed in southern Gaza: Israeli military

It said that Ashkenazi Nechemya, 19, from Ashkelon, was killed in the south of the Palestinian enclave, bringing the total number of Israeli soldiers killed on or since October 7 to 695.

The figure includes 332 soldiers who the Israeli military claims have been killed since it began ground operations in the Gaza Strip on October 27.

Over a dozen injured, 1 killed in Israeli strike on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians: PRCS

The Palestine Red Crescent (PRCS) has posted a video on X of its emergency service crews operating in the al-Mawasi area of al-Qarara, west of Khan Younis, after Israeli forces targeted tents sheltering displaced people.

It says that its crews transported 17 injured people and the body of one person killed in the attack.
