UN demands probe into Global Sumud Flotilla attacks

The UN has called for an independent probe into the attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla saying anyone behind the “violations” should face accountability.

“There must be an independent, impartial and thorough investigation into the reported attacks and harassment by drones and other objects,” UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Thameen al-Kheetan said in a statement.

As we reported earlier, organisers of the Gaza-bound flotilla reported suffering a series of overnight drone attacks with sound bombs and chemical agents dropped.

Italian PM says flotilla to Gaza a ‘dangerous, irresponsible’ initiative

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says the humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza is a “dangerous, irresponsible” initiative, hours after her government’s defence minister said an Italian navy ship had been redirected towards the convoy for possible assistance.

“There is no need to risk one’s own safety. It is not necessary to go to a warzone to deliver aid to Gaza, which the Italian government and the competent authorities could have delivered in a few hours,” Meloni told Italian media in New York before giving a speech at the UN General Assembly.

The prime minister said her government had proposed handing over the flotilla’s aid to Cyprus and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem instead.

The flotilla, which currently numbers 51 vessels, aims to break an Israeli siege that has been allowing only a trickle of aid into Gaza.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has repeatedly said the spread of starvation in Gaza is a direct result of the Israeli government’s policy of blocking humanitarian aid. In August, a UN-backed global hunger monitor declared a famine in the enclave and called it “man-made”.

Meloni is complicit. The 'competent' authorities have failed to deliver and keep supporting the man made famine.

Spain to send navy ship to assist Gaza aid flotilla

Spain will send a navy ship to assist a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said, after several boats were targeted by drones off Greece.

“We are concerned, and that is why we will be deploying a ship to ensure that, if necessary, our citizens can be rescued and brought back to Spain,” Sanchez told a new conference in New York, adding that the ship would depart on Thursday.

Italy announced earlier that it had sent a navy frigate to assist the flotilla.

Top Norwegian diplomat says discussions on Gaza’s day after taking place at UNGA

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide tells Al Jazeera that conversations are taking place behind closed doors on ending the war in Gaza, building upon a roadmap put forward in the so-called New York Declaration in July that has been endorsed by 142 member states.

“In order to move forward with stopping the war, we also need to see what is going to happen on the day after,” he said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“Just turning the clock back to October 6, 2023, is not a solution. Who is going to run Gaza? To what extent is this connected to the Palestinian Authority? Who will back it up? All of these things are being discussed right now.”

“Those of us who are closest to the Israeli position are beginning to understand that we cannot just continue with this endless, senseless war, and that includes the United States,” he added.

Oh the Witkoff record player is still stuck on repeat

US envoy Witkoff confident of ‘some sort of breakthrough’ on Gaza in coming days

The United States is “hopeful … even confident that in the coming days we’ll be able to announce some sort of breakthrough” on the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, US special envoy Steve Witkoff says.

He said President Donald Trump’s 21-point peace plan had been presented to some leaders on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Netanyahu says Palestinian state will not be established

Israel’s prime minister has warned once again that “a Palestinian state will not be established” as a flurry of countries recognise Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly.

“The shameful surrender of some leaders to Palestinian terrorism will not bind Israel in any way,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.

Netanyahu also said any attack on Israeli cities will be met “with a painful blow to the Houthi regime”, hours after a drone attack claimed by the Yemeni group struck the southern city of Eilat.

The prime minister said he has asked the army to consider ways to respond to the air threats.

Israeli protesters gather at airport as Netanyahu leaves for New York

Hundreds of protesters have gathered at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport to demonstrate against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he takes off for the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Demonstrators have been blaming the government for the failure to reach a deal that guarantees the release of the captives still held in Gaza.

They also held signs decrying Netanyahu’s nomination of David Zini as head of the Shin Bet security service, amid concerns that he is ideologically close to Netanyahu and would not serve as an independent gatekeeper.

How a US prisoner gave his entire $17.74 paycheque to Gaza

At 17, Hamzah’s life changed forever with a tragic accident that led to a 15-years-to-life sentence in California. During his incarceration, he found faith and resilience, inspired by Malcolm X and his conversion to Islam.

After Israel’s war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023, and it imposed a siege on Gaza that has cut off food, water and electricity to the enclave, Hamzah donated his entire month’s paycheque of $17.74, earned at 13 cents an hour, to support aid efforts in Gaza.

$17.74 is a short documentary about loss, redemption and the unexpected connections made beyond bars and borders.

Photographers from Gaza reveal horrors of war

An exhibition of photographs taken by Palestinians in Gaza has opened in London.

Winners of the Photo Humanity Grant, Against Erasure, is a collection of works by 11 photographers and artists that capture the realities of their daily lives under conflict and famine.

Desperate Palestinians set up tents near feared Israeli army base

Thousands of people have fled besieged Gaza City on the coastal al-Rashid Street during the early hours, trying to move to the south of the Strip with whatever transportation they can find.

But some families do not know where to go. That’s why they have set up makeshift tents here, close to the Netzarim Corridor, just 1km (0.6 miles) away from a major Israeli military presence.

These families spent the night in the open, without access to water or toilets, and in many cases, unable to get their hands on any food to feed their children.

This is how desperate the humanitarian situation is for Palestinians from northern Gaza who have been forcibly displaced by the Israeli army’s expulsion orders.

Overnight Israeli attacks kill at least 15 in Gaza with many buried in the debris

Israel’s overnight and early morning attacks in Gaza have killed at least 15 people, sources tell Al Jazeera.

The victims include:

  • Eleven people – including children – killed in a family home sheltering displaced people in central Gaza’s al-Zawayda area.
  • Four people killed in a house in southern Khan Younis city.
  • Many others were wounded in both attacks.

Several of the 11 people killed in Israel’s overnight attack on a house in central Gaza’s az-Zawayda area are children, the civil defence agency tells AFP news agency. The bodies of the child victims have been brought to a nearby hospital, according to the emergency service.

Israeli soldier killed in Gaza City as ground fighting intensifies

An Israeli soldier has been killed by a Palestinian sniper in encircled Gaza City, according to the military. He was identified as a 21-year-old staff sergeant from the Nahal Brigade.

Israeli forces kill two aid seekers in central, southern Gaza

Israeli forces have fired at and killed two people seeking aid in separate attacks in central and southern Gaza, according to a local ambulance source cited by our colleagues on the ground. Other people were wounded in the attacks, they report.

Woman, children killed after phone calls from under the rubble

A Palestinian woman managed to call several relatives and friends from under the rubble of her bombed home in Gaza City’s southwestern Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood. But she and her two children died after Israel bombed them again and delayed the rescue.

Ghada Rabah first called for help on Monday afternoon, saying she was trapped and needed immediate rescue. Her brother had been killed by an Israeli bomb a day earlier.

Palestinian Civil Defence teams were denied an initial request to the Israeli army to head to the area, but were finally allowed a short mission on Tuesday. They found the home had been destroyed after it was hit by a second Israeli strike.

According to local media, the area of the attacks is close to where Hind Rajab and her family were killed by Israeli forces last year.

Israeli air strike slams into Gaza City electricity company

Footage verified by Al Jazeera shows an Israeli air strike hitting a building in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood. Grey smoke engulfs the structure, home to a local electricity firm, as cries from nearby residents echo in the background.

Remaining Gaza City residents ‘afraid of what might come next’

I’ve spoken with families here who decided to stay despite Israel’s intensifying ground invasion. They told me they’re staying because of the high cost of relocating and the fact that they have no place to go, as well as the harsh reality that nowhere in Gaza is beyond the reach of Israeli attacks.

The people remaining here are living in a completely desperate situation. They are struggling to access drinking water because most of the desalination plants have been transferred to southern Gaza.

Meanwhile, attacks are intensifying and Israeli tanks are stationed close to where we are outside al-Shifa Hospital. People are afraid of what might come next.

Smoke rises over southern Gaza City after repeated Israeli air raids

The Israeli military continues to heavily bombard the southern areas of Gaza City as its ground forces push deeper into the besieged area.

Air raids and artillery fire are being used in the relentless attacks as Israel tries to capture the main urban centre, still home to hundreds of thousands of war-weary Palestinian civilians.

People ‘trapped’ in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood

The Israeli military is stationed in three axes here in Gaza City: the northwestern axis in the Shati refugee camp and the Nassr neighbourhood; the northeastern axis by the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood; and the southern axis near Tal al-Hawa.

Significant ground assaults have taken place in Tal al-Hawa. We continue to hear artillery shelling taking place there.

Reports indicate there are many people still trapped in the city’s Sabra neighbourhood. They are stuck there because if they decide to go out, they could end up being targeted by Israeli forces. Scenes of Palestinians being targeted and residential homes flattened over residents’ heads are repeating.

Israel bombs Gaza 170 times over 24 hours

The Israeli military says its warplanes struck 170 “terrorist targets” across the Gaza Strip over the past day and will continue its attacks.

Three divisions of the army continue to advance during a ground invasion of Gaza City and its northern areas, where the Israeli military claimed Palestinian fighters were killed and a weapons warehouse was destroyed, without providing any evidence.

Seven more health facilities forced out of service in Gaza City

Seven hospitals and health facilities in besieged Gaza City have been forced to close in recent days as Israel’s ground assault and bombardment intensify.

Among those shut down are al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital and the International Eye Hospital – the only public eye care centre. Both, located in the Nassr neighbourhood of northern Gaza City, were closed after Israeli bombardment nearby, the Health Ministry said.

Al-Quds Hospital is partially operational after its oxygen station was damaged in an attack, leaving it reliant on cylinders that could run out within days, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) warned.

Other medical facilities – including al-Shifa Hospital, al-Ahli Arab Hospital, and a PRCS field hospital – are still providing limited services.

Israeli army expands ground invasion of southern Gaza

Three Israeli military divisions are pushing deep into Gaza City and the north but more Israeli troops continue to advance in the southern part of the Palestinian enclave as well.

The Israeli army said commandos with its Etzioni Brigade have been operating across the ruins of Rafah in recent weeks, and have “attacked and killed dozens of terrorists” and destroyed what remains of infrastructure in the area.

After combing through Rafah, “the forces immediately moved on to continue operations in the Khan Younis area”, also in southern Gaza, which has been separated by a military corridor from Rafah.

‘No single space for anyone’: Forced evacuation zone packed with people

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are fleeing besieged Gaza City as Israel escalates its assault to seize the Strip’s largest urban area. But many do not know where to go and have to pay high prices in new locations to set up tents.

“We have arrived in this remote area with no tents, no facilities. We cannot get water supplies. Kids cannot find anything to eat because we are far from everyone else,” said Ahlam Aqel, a displaced woman from Gaza City.

Ahmed Salama, a man forced from his home in northern Gaza, said his future is unclear. “We are going to central Gaza and we do not know where we are going to stay. The al-Mawasi evacuation zone is overcrowded with displaced people. There is no single space for anyone to move there.”

Gaza’s death toll rises to 65,502

The Health Ministry reports 83 bodies were brought to hospitals across Gaza over the past 24 hours, along with 216 wounded Palestinians.

This brings the death toll from Israeli attacks since October 2023 to 65,502, and 167,376 others wounded. Since Israel broke the ceasefire with Hamas on March 18, at least 12,939 people have been killed and 55,335 wounded.

Over the past day, seven aid seekers have been killed and 50 wounded, bringing the total to 2,538 Palestinians killed while searching for food and 18,581 wounded.

Conditions deteriorating fast for displaced Palestinians in Gaza

The Government Media Office says hundreds of thousands of Palestinians across Gaza are now forcibly displaced again by Israel, and the central and southern governorates, particularly the al-Mawasi area, are full.

“There are no longer any empty or safe spaces to absorb more displaced people,” the office said in a statement, adding that makeshift tents have sprung up alongside unsafe roads “in conditions that lack the minimum requirements of a dignified life”.

The press office said the Israeli military continues to prevent donated tents from getting inside Gaza, so the few remaining in marketplaces are extremely expensive, leaving many people without any sort of shelter from worsening weather.

This is a result of a “systematic policy” by Israel that is backed by the United States, it said.

Israeli forces kill 2 Palestinians in clashes in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces engaged in a deadly clash with Palestinians during an overnight raid on the town of Tammun, near Tubas, in the occupied West Bank, reports the Wafa news agency.

Israeli troops surrounded a home in the town and fired at it for hours, killing two young men. Local sources told Al Jazeera the dead men’s names are Mohammad Qassem and Alaa Joudat.

PIJ confirms 2 members killed in Tammun gun battle

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) has now confirmed that they were members of its armed wing, identifying them as a commander and a fighter in the Tammun company of Tubas Battalion. Al-Quds Brigades said its fighters remain committed to “resistance until liberation and return”.

The Israeli military said it worked with security agency Shin Bet to kill the “terrorists” who “planned to carry out an attack imminently”. It confirmed that Israeli soldiers fired machineguns and a grenade launcher at the house.

Israeli settler raid and army arrests in occupied West Bank

Israeli settlers descended on the Masafer Yatta area in Hebron, a Palestinian community repeatedly targeted. They tried to intimidate a gathering of Shi’b al-Butm, people of a small herding hamlet in the South Hebron Hills.

Elsewhere in Hebron, Israeli soldiers launched multiple incursions, including on the town of Sa’ir and the Fawwar refugee camp, arresting at least five people.

Wafa reported at least six more were arrested in Ramallah, with another raid taking place in Qalqilya.

Mayor, journalist, ex-prisoner among West Bank Palestinians detained

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office has confirmed a journalist was arrested by Israeli soldiers during the storming of the town of Sa’ir, north of Hebron, in the occupied West Bank.

Another man, a former prisoner who had been recently released, was arrested again during an incursion in the town of Halhul near Hebron.

In Salfit, the Wafa news agency said Israeli authorities detained the mayor of Bruqin town along with the representative of Fatah and his deputy after raiding their homes. They were later released.

Another incursion took place in the village of Marda in Salfit, where a young man was arrested.
