Forums - Politics - Israel-Hamas war, Gaza genocide

Main events on September 8th

  • Israeli forces killed dozens more Palestinians in Gaza and continued to destroy infrastructure in Gaza City, with Prime Minister Netanyahu issuing a direct threat to residents of the city, telling them to “leave now” and that they have been warned.
  • Hamas said in a statement that Netanyahu’s boasting about the continued destruction of residential high-rise buildings in Gaza City, most recently the as-Salam tower, represents “one of the most heinous images of sadism and criminality”.
  • A shooting attack in occupied East Jerusalem killed at least six people. In response, Israeli forces carried out violent raids across the occupied West Bank, killing two 14-year-old Palestinian boys and wounding others.

Israel bombs vehicle in Lebanon

A vehicle has been hit in the Iqlim al-Kharroub region of Lebanon. According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, the vehicle was struck by a drone, but no casualties were reported.

The Israeli army has not commented, but it regularly bombs Lebanon ostensibly to target Hezbollah, with air raids on Monday killing at least five people.

Israeli forces destroy house of Palestinian detainee in West Bank

Israeli forces have blown up the house of a Palestinian detainee who was accused of carrying out an attack last December that killed an Israeli and wounded others, according to media reports.

Israeli forces demolished the house of Thabet Masalma in Beit Awwa, west of Hebron in the occupied West Bank. The Wafa news agency reported that Israeli forces raided the village, cordoned off the home and placed explosives inside before detonating them.

It said the demolition raid prompted fighting with residents, with Israeli forces firing ammunition and tear gas, injuring two Palestinians.

The demolition comes as Israeli government ministers have threatened a tough response in the wake of yesterday’s shooting attack that killed six people, including collective punishment such as demolishing suspects’ family homes and deporting family members.

Two Palestinians arrested in occupied West Bank raids

Israeli forces have arrested two Palestinians from Hebron governorate in the occupied West Bank.

The Wafa news agency is reporting that one of the men was arrested in a village west of the city of Dura, southwest of Hebron, while the other was arrested in the town of Bani Na’im, east of Hebron, after Israeli forces searched their homes.

Israeli forces also set up checkpoints and closed roads in the Hebron area.

Israel imposing collective punishment, ‘civil sanctions’ after Jerusalem shooting

A day after the shooting attack in Jerusalem, collective punishment is in full swing in the occupied West Bank.

There has been a complete siege and lockdown of areas where Palestinian gunmen came from. The areas are closed off, with barriers put in the streets. Israeli forces are also mapping out their homes for demolition.

Israel’s defence minister says there will be more, far-reaching and severe consequences.

We’ve already seen some of that this morning. He said he is revoking all work permits for everyone in those towns, meaning at least 750 permits will be revoked for Palestinians who want to go into Israel to work, because the economy in the West Bank is in a dire situation.

Israel is also imposing “civil sanctions” on the family members of the attackers, even though they were not involved. Yesterday, we also saw the arrests of some of the family members of the attackers, including the father and uncle of one of them.

Deaths, injuries after Israel bombs Shati refugee camp

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that several people have been killed and wounded in an Israeli attack on a house in Shati camp, west of Gaza City.

At least 25 people are missing.

Israeli army issues another evacuation threat for Gaza City

The Israeli army has issued another threat to all Gaza City residents, warning them to evacuate south or risk being killed. The army released a map online, saying everyone must leave via al-Rashid Street to reach the so-called “humanitarian” area in al-Mawasi.

Israel drops leaflets over Gaza City

Footage shared online from Gaza City shows the Israeli army has once again dropped leaflets with forced evacuation orders for the entire area.

Israel bombed 30 multistorey Gaza buildings

Israel’s defence minister has threatened more destruction for Gaza City after saying the army bombed 30 multistorey buildings.

Israel Katz said if Hamas did not lay down its weapons and release all captives held in Gaza, “they will be destroyed and Gaza will be ruined.”

Six more Palestinians die of Israeli-induced famine

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that six more Palestinians died of Israeli-induced starvation over the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of deaths from starvation to 399 people, including 140 children.

Since the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declared famine in major parts of Gaza in late August, at least 121 deaths have been recorded, including those of 25 children.

‘People alive under the rubble’ after Gaza City bombing

The Civil Defence rescue force in Gaza reports that its first responders are working with their bare hands to rescue people trapped under the rubble of homes in several neighbourhoods of Gaza City that were bombed by Israel.

Up to 25 people are missing, some still “alive under the rubble and others missing” in the Shati area of western Gaza City, the organisation said while calling the widespread targeting of residential buildings a “crime”.

Israel destroyed more than 200 residential apartment units in Gaza City in 72 hours

Gaza’s Civil Defence says five high-rise buildings, each with more than seven floors, have been bombed by the Israeli army over the past three days.

Together, they contained 209 apartment units, each sheltering at least 20 people during the state of emergency, meaning more than 4,100 Palestinians, many of them children, were left homeless.

More than 350 tents were also reportedly destroyed, each sheltering 10 people.

The rescue organisation said this means that several thousand people are “now living in the open, deprived of the most basic necessities of life, struggling against death, hunger, and unbearable heat in a catastrophic scene beyond description”.

“The world watches in silence, while Gaza City cries out for rescue before it’s too late. An urgent appeal to all humanitarian organisations and to the world: Act now to save the lives of thousands of innocent civilians.”

We’ve become completely trapped: Gaza City residents

Palestinians say Israel’s goal in the war on Gaza is “displacement” following more forced evacuation threats in Gaza City.

“The primary goal of the occupation is displacement… but there’s no place left, not in the south, nor the north, nothing,” said Bajees al-Khalidi, a displaced Palestinian. “We’ve become completely trapped. They either want to push us out of the Gaza Strip or move us to another place, but there’s nowhere left.”

Another displaced Palestinian and cancer patient, Umm Ghassan, called on the international community for help. “We received a message to evacuate Israa Tower. It’s located near a cancer treatment facility. At that moment, the fear among the women and children was immense,” she said. “We call on the international community – it’s enough. Nothing remains. Our homes have been destroyed.”

Palestinians demonstrate against Gaza City evacuation threats

A number of Palestinians organised a protest this morning to reject the Israeli evacuation threats. The footage below, verified by Al Jazeera, shows dozens of people participating in the demonstration.

Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary said Palestinians at the demonstration stressed their refusal to leave their homes, holding banners reading “We will not leave” and “Not going out”.

Most Gaza City residents refusing to leave: Gaza authorities

Gaza’s Government Media Office says more than 1.3 million people remain in Gaza City and areas north of the enclave’s most populous city as the Israeli army “attempts to carry out the crime of forced displacement in violation of all international laws”.

It said in a statement that some people who left Gaza City for al-Mawasi in the south were forced to return due to worsening living conditions in the south.

About 800,000 people live in the al-Mawasi areas of the Khan Younis and Rafah governorates, according to the office. Israel has designated it as a “safe zone” but, according to the Government Media Office, has attacked it at least 109 times, killing more than 2,000 people.

Gaza’s death toll rises to 64,605 people

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that 83 bodies and 223 wounded Palestinians were brought to hospitals across Gaza over the past 24 hours.

This brings the total casualty toll since the start of the war to 64,605 people killed and 163,319 wounded. That includes 14 aid seekers killed and 37 wounded over the past 24 hours, with 2,444 aid seekers killed and 17,831 injured in total.

Since breaking the ceasefire on March 18, Israel has killed at least 12,059 people and wounded 51,278 in Gaza.

Israel intent on ethnically cleansing Gaza: Analyst

Israel is intent on ethnically cleansing Gaza, according to Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Washington-based Institute for Policy Studies.

“Netanyahu shows no signs of changing his demand that Hamas simply surrender as the only answer he would accept, or he will otherwise go ahead with more devastation of Gaza City, and the destruction one by one of high-rise buildings, regardless of who’s in them,” she told Al Jazeera.

Bennis pointed out that more than one million Palestinians living in Gaza City, many of them living in tents among the rubble of homes, have now been told to leave.

“This is about ethnic cleansing. This is about creating conditions that make impossible the survival of a group. That’s the language of Article III of the Genocide Convention, the third of five acts of violence, that along with intention, constitute genocide.

“Israel has been carrying out that genocide by creating conditions that make it impossible for Palestinians to survive in Gaza.”

UN renews call for ceasefire as high-rise attacks displace Palestinians

The UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says dozens of Palestinian families have been displaced as a result of Israel’s latest attacks on high-rise buildings in Gaza City.

Israel’s defence minister said 30 buildings have been levelled and threatened more destruction.

‘We are heading into the unknown’: Medical NGO in Gaza

A medical NGO operating in Gaza says it is highly concerned about the humanitarian sector’s ability to respond to the wave of people displaced by Israel’s offensive on Gaza City.

Speaking from Deir el-Balah, Mai el-Awawda, communications officer at Medical Aid for Palestinians, said support to meet the needs of Palestinians was already inadequate.

But with the latest flow of people from Gaza City, “we are heading into the unknown”, she said.

Al-Mawasi was already overcrowded ”with hundreds of thousands of people with almost no basic life needs – no water nor enough food”, she said. “There is no contingency plan that will be able to [address] the needs we are … to witness in the upcoming days.”

‘Gaza is being obliterated, reduced to a wasteland’: Lazzarini

The head of UNRWA says the Gaza Strip is being emptied of its forcibly starved population, which is forced to move into the so-called “humanitarian” area in al-Mawasi.

“There is no safe place in Gaza, let alone a humanitarian zone. It is a large and growing camp concentrating hungry Palestinians in despair,” Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement.

“Warnings of famine have fallen on deaf ears,” he said, asking whether the same fate awaits the deepening catastrophe in Gaza City.

“End the impunity before atrocities become the new norm.”

Hundreds of pro-Palestine demonstrators rally outside London arms show

They gathered outside a major arms fair in London as it opened without the presence of Israeli government officials because of tension between the UK and Israel over the Gaza conflict.

Police watched as some 300 protesters waved Palestinian flags and held up placards, including one reading “UK: Stop arming Israel. Stop the Gaza Genocide.”

The UK government excluded the officials from the four-day event, but 51 Israeli defence companies are set to attend, including arms manufacturer Elbit.

Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries, both government-owned, will also have exhibitions, making Israel the fifth-largest national contingent at the fair at the Excel London exhibition centre.

The Israeli companies “should be investigated for crimes against humanity, not invited to profit from the unspeakable devastation they have caused in Gaza”, Campaign Against Arms Trade spokesperson Emily Apple said in a statement.

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog is due in London on Tuesday for a three-day official visit.

What has been happening already in Doha is that the Hamas delegation has been meeting to discuss the latest US proposal to bring a cessation of hostilities, as the Israeli forces have been pushing forward a plan to seize Gaza City. And we can say, by many people who are observing, that this is yet another Israeli attempt to thwart any plan, any suggestion, any proposal to bring a cessation of hostilities.

(4) Updates LIVE: Israel targets Hamas leadership in attack on Qatar’s Doha

Israel targeting a delegation that is trying to discuss ceasefire proposals. Very obviously trying to scuttle the ceasefire discussions but also now bombing Qatar, I'm sick of "Hamas is there" being used an excuse for Israel to just bomb whatever country it likes with zero consequences. Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Iran, and now Qatar. What country HASN'T Israel bombed? There is no country in the Middle-East safe from Israel.

Loud explosions heard in Qatar’s Doha

Loud explosions have been heard in Qatar’s capital, Doha.

The Israel Broadcasting Authority, citing a senior Israeli official, has reported that the explosions were the result of an attack against senior Hamas officials.

A senior Hamas source has told Al Jazeera that leaders of the group have been targeted in Doha while was discussing US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Israeli military confirms attack in Doha, says target was Hamas leaders

The Israeli military has confirmed that in cooperation with Israel’s domestic security agency Shin Bet, its air force has carried out an assassination attempt on top Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital.

It claimed the unnamed Hamas members who were attacked led the organisation’s activities for years, adding that it will continue to act to “defeat the Hamas terrorist organisation”.

The attack comes days after Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir threatened to assassinate Hamas leaders living abroad and hours after Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel has accepted a Gaza ceasefire proposal offered by the US.

Attack comes as Hamas delegation was meeting to consider recent US proposal

What has been happening already in Doha is that the Hamas delegation has been meeting to discuss the latest US proposal to bring a cessation of hostilities, as the Israeli forces have been pushing forward a plan to seize Gaza City.

We’ve been seeing this morning how the Israeli army has been asking people to leave, issuing evacuation threats and orders against Palestinians living inside Gaza asking them to move south. And we can say, by many people who are observing, that this is yet another Israeli attempt to thwart any plan, any suggestion, any proposal to bring a cessation of hostilities.

Qatar slams ‘cowardly’ Israeli attack on Hamas in Doha

Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s FM, says in a statement that the country “condemns in the strongest terms” the attack, which he said was carried out on residential buildings housing several members of the Hamas political bureau.

“This criminal attack constitutes a flagrant violation of all international laws and norms and a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents of Qatar,” the statement reads.

“While strongly condemning this attack, the State of Qatar affirms that it will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behavior and its continued tampering with regional security, as well as any action targeting its security and sovereignty. Investigations are underway at the highest level, and further details will be announced as soon as they become available.”

Targeted site in Doha ‘very close to residential buildings’

Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Suhaib Al-Assa reports the site that was targeted by Israel in Doha is close to a residential neighbourhood – not an isolated area.

Al-Assa cited security officials as saying that their priority is to secure the scene and locate damage and casualties.

“The security procedures are very complex because we are talking about an extremely sensitive site – a site that is very close to residential buildings and people’s homes,” he said.
