Forums - Nintendo - Interplay to become a major Nintendo publisher?

@Joelcool7

You are somewhat overly ambitious. Perhaps expecting far too much. I suspect they will market to the online services. No particular reason for exclusivity unless they are paid, and then market the exclusivity of a big project banking on that properties name recognition. In which case it is less likely it will be for the Wii. Microsoft or Sony may front the capitol which is what they probably want. Low risk high reward.

Never heard of them. Hope they do support the wii though. The more hardcore developers the better.

You've never heard of Interplay!? Clayfighter? Fallout? EARTHWORM JIM!?

"We're DOOMED, DOOMED I tell ya! DOOMED, from the middle english meaning 'condemned to ruination or death'! DOO-MED!!

That is the only one I heard of, and that wasn't until like a month ago.

Thanks for making me feel old.

Damn, a good Interplay Earthworm Jim game would make me either have to borrow or buy a Wii. I love those games! Even the N64 ones!

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Clayfighter... it was what SSB is to me now. I loved that game.

Awesome Earthworm Jim Wii would be freaking sweet, and if they did it right would have the potential to be pretty amazing. Why is it that I keep hearing about all these 3rd parties coming to the Wii...

(a little sarcasm, I know why)

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

they've made some of the most originals games ever .. like Earthworm Jim and Clay fighter .... total classics ... and a funny part of my SNES days ...

OK, about these games. I own Earthworm Jim for SNES. The art style was amazing back then but I found the game kind of hard. I never played the 1st Clay Fighter but I rented CF TE and CF2. They were fun rentals back then and CF2 is worth the $8 if you never played it or miss it (I know, it has not been announced). Interplay made another clay game which I used to own (bought used from Blockbuster many years ago), Claymates. It is a platformer that had good graphics and an interesting design at the time.

If CF2 or Claymates is released on VC, I'll get it but I think I'll pass on the 4 announced games.

 Am I?

Take a look at all the other small publishers Majesco , Atari , Global Star Software, DSI , Crave and then look at other publishers like CodeMasters who developes all of their Wii titles exclusively for Wii. Interplay has an over all networth of only 6-million USD.

Based on that information we know they do not have the budget to develope a PS3/360 multiplatform title. Its fiscally impossible with only 6-mill. Even if their games were LiveArcade/PSN/WiiWare it would still be difficult for them to support the PS3/360. That is if they plan to hit a massive market which they appear to be targetting.

Nintendo Wii titles are the cheapest by far to develope and if Interplay wanted they could develope up to three low budget Wii games. Considering a low budget game usually goes for about 2-mill on the Wii, a really low budget 360 title is also possible but porting it to the PS3 sounds pretty expensive.

Low risk, Nintendo's Wii has the largest market share of all the consoles and the highest success rate for independant studios and publishers.  If Interplay plans on capitalizing on its EarthWorm Jim franchise then a Wii title would make the most plausable sense. Maybe even a DS title to go along with the Wii version they could both be made for cheaper then a single 360 title.

In the end I see online systems like WiiWare/X-BoxLiveArcade/PSN as highly unlikely for the launch of a major franchise. If Interplay plans on reviving franchises like EarthWorm Jim then the Wii is most likely their first choice.

Lastly Interplays capabilities. In less then half a decade we have seen tons of new publishers immerge the likes of Ignition , Crave ...etc...etc... fact is these publishers have all over performed in my opinion based on the fact that they were non-existant only a few years ago. With its classic IP's going to sell well on VirtualConsole I think a stable flow of income can be expected. That stable flow of income could keep Interplay out of the red, also the company is going public with its stock meaning that funds should begin to pour in.

Once EarthWorm Jim and FallOut have both been used I think Interplay will have the capitol to make themselves a very real publisher again in the near future. I'd suspect sales of up to a million copies of EarthWorm Jim (Wii/DS) and I suspect FallOut will turn a profit too.  I bet Interplay will become a major player on the Wii because of its lower costing development proccess , large market share and low software failure rate.

Maybe Dodece meant something about Interplay's terrible track record in producing games (in recent years), managing money, or screwing over those that work for the company. 6 million is not a lot of money and Interplay's main goal seems to be to put 75+ million into an MMO. So far, the company has done nothing. Hopefully it makes some money off the 4 VC games so it can release better VC games and finally start to make new games.

Interplay can still make a Fallout MMO without paying Bethesda. If I recall everything exactly (without sifting through no mutants allowed forums), Bethesda payed for the rights to release Fallout 3, 4 and 5. Interplay kept the rights to releasing a Fallout MMO and should take control of the Fallout IP after Bethesda releases Fallout 5.

I loved the old SNES Earthworm Jim games, and yes they were some of the hardest platformers ever.
