The problem with Install Base is that it's pretty much sales and only sales, which has its place, but the lack of actual game discussion means I don't go there much any more.

Famiboards is better, but it inherited a lot of political BS from Resetera where you're not even allowed to talk about some games and if you say anything that doesn't adhere to extreme political correctness, you're a goner.

Neogaf is quite active still, but it goes hard in the opposite direction with a lot of right wing culture warring, plus it's kind of a time capsule from the 2000s in that there's a pervasive attitude of "lol Nintendo is trash for little kids, real men play on Playstation/PC".

For all its problems, VGChartz still offers a more balanced environment than any of the alternatives, which is why I still come here despite it having shrunk to a fraction of its former size.

Completely agree on this.

Looking at Famiboards, its almost identical to ResetERA when it comes to discussions and viewpoints.

The only thing it has going imo superior to ResetERA is the UI on Famiboards is amazing. The "Like" buton actually has a sound too lol. Custom backgrounds like the Tears of the Kingdom style is really appealing to me.

VGChartz just needs a fresh coat of paint and a bit more activity and users - and all would be well.

Ironically if us awful ban happy Mods followed the rules to such a strict degree. “Backseat Moderating - You are not a moderator! Use the Report button or contact a moderator via PM if you see anything that needs attention.” You would have been banned multiple times over by now.

Actually, on that note, I’m curious: Why is “backseat moderating” reason to moderate somebody? It almost comes off to me as, “You are not allowed to voice your opinion against authority on this site. Otherwise, we have reason to ban you.” I feel like this is a good rule to have in place, but the wording is a little vague and thereby broad, creating the adverse effect of collecting people who I do not believe should be banned. (E.g. In a forum discussion problems and solutions for the forum, somebody questions the enforcement of a site rule, so as to potentially dig into a legitimate issue with the site.)

Also, FWIW while I do believe the mods can be a tad bit “ban happy” at times (e.g. When I stated how NS2 was showing up PS5, bursting out the gate with DKBananza and MKWorld), it is undeniable that the moderators here exercise a tremendous amount of self-control. With how I engaged in the political forums, for instance, it is shocking that I only ever received a temporary thread ban lol. We also have infamous users such as Hardstuck_Platinum who haven’t seen much any punishment despite being a crystal clear case of “trolling.” Now, do I think more people need be moderated? Well…with how small this site is, I’d say no. Unless you’re looking to accelerate the decline, I think mercy and grace should be exercised at all times. Plus, we are all human. We all make mistakes; sometimes we are just having a really bad day/week/month. I think forgiveness and second chances go a long way.

I couldn't say the original intentions since that rule has been here since I joined but I imagine it's along the lines of if we allowed it then people would go around publicly in the forms in an attempt to create witch-hunts against certain users, they'd be a lot of "This user should be banned!" in threads and attempt of public pressure instead of simply reporting it, it could be used in clique ways, it also encourages grandstanding. Then of course we also don't want threads dragged off topic by a single user or two complaining about a ban.

As for thread bans, that was my team who introduced those and we introduced those precisely so we didn't need to do full bans, if a user is only an issue in one area then a thread ban solves that issue without banning them from the site entirely, but still people complain as if they'd prefer for us to go back to full bans, Lol. There have been plenty of times I could have banned someone but opted for a thread ban instead. We can use it to remove Xbox trolls or Sony trolls or Nintendo trolls from one section of the site and then they can actually f*cking talk about what they enjoy instead of what they don't

Also, there should be an option to (i) add more voting options to polls (max 20), (ii) allow for rank-based voting, and (iii) multi-selection. I just created a thread for “Winningest GotY 2025?” and felt quite limited in my options. If possible, I think these would make for very good additions. :)

This was on the list once, although I think I suggested to lock it behind supporter, Lol.

Those other things would be nice options, I've wanted multi-selection for a while, and the ability to change your vote in case of accidental miss click, it could have a timer on it like you can't change your vote after 1 day so people don't vote for one thing, then change their vote to the other once the other thing "wins" Lol. I've also wanted public votes, a setting to show who voted for what which could be good for certain prediction style threads, all of these will be options of course and not just applied to every single poll.

A fresh coat of paint would be great. But we don't have the money. Bandorr has helped us with adding many features as a volunteer, however, to redesign the site is another level. I'm not even sure how we want a redesigned site to look.

I'm looking at the biggest gaming site (I think?), IGN, and instead of a top row with links to the different areas of the site they have it on the left. While the front page is essentially just one really tall column that keeps loading more articles as you scroll down. VGChartz has the front page on desktop as three columns (left sales, middle articles, right forums/user content).

VGChartz Sales Analyst and Writer - William D'Angelo - I stream on Twitch and have my own YouTube channel discussing gaming sales and news. Follow me on Bluesky.

I post and adjust the VGChartz hardware estimates, with help from Machina.

Writer of the Sales Comparison | Monthly Hardware Breakdown Monthly Sales Analysis | Marketshare Features, as well as daily news on the Video Game Industry.

How attached are people to avatars on front page? I still think they make the site look messy. Would something like this not be preferable...

Imagine Bradlod's name is hyperlinked in Orange but the avatar is now removed.

Also having "Discussion" in the name is totally pointless, Lol.

I also think we should merge this table.

Into one.

(Ignore the first empty block).

I like that change a lot! As for the avatars? I think I’d be open to seeing them removed. Could help the site look a little bit more clean.

Yeah remove avatars.

Actually yeah, remove avatar. It’s very weird seeing my Link icon all over the list lol.

I love this shit, Lol. I'm not any good at editing or understanding coding but I still like going into the HTML and doing basic ass changes to try to come up with new ideas, Lol. IIRC I changed up the whole Avatar area in Forum Posts before but I've probably lost that now.

I also want us to revamp the leaderboard area into a mega leaderboard tracking multiple things.
