Forums - Sony - You prefer to drop or delay..?

well if i was manager i of a big gaming company, i would never announce my games till i know they'll be made on schedule.

While a good idea it's got two flaws:

1) As somebody else mentioned hype is a powerful marketing tool.  The problem of course is that hype can be a double-edged sword.

2) Nintendo basically tries to keep game announcements close to the chest with the exception of launch titles.  This results in every two months a flood of "What comes after ......?" posts where everybody starts to think the system is about to collapse as there are no titles left.

Considering how difficult it is to develop games these days, especially the PS3, it's understandable that there are some kinks to iron out until there's an SDK to effectively tame that bitch. Sony, though, seems to take liberties with the delays as we've seen Home be delayed AGAIN, which time could make it into a great product or A COLOSSAL FAILURE! If I were head honcho (which would be the publisher), I'd treat it as case sensitive as not all things go according to plan. As far as hype goes, I'd tease by throwing bits and pieces to stir interest and let the title be known; however, I would wait until I know for certain 6 months it will be out the door before I lift the floodgates of hype. Gamers can generally be quite fickle and rabid so it would be a good idea not to piss them off more than I need to.

All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be.

Point is that when the company/team is designing a game then they should have a fair deal of idea how much time it will take and then they should add some cushion period and only then they should talk abt release date...

... why are people so upset about the public HOME BETA being delayed ...

The full release was always TBA ... with SONY "aiming for late 08" ...

As for game delays in general it depends -- I think RE5 is the best example of what companies should do. It was annouced for 2009 and now looks like it can make holiday 08. By annoucing it early you can generate the hype, but by also giving themselves a deadline so far away it prevents dissapoint ...

For a product like HOME..

if they put it out n it was FULL of bugs, glitches, slow downs....THAT would give them horrible PR & would probably limit the success of home..

All the ADD kids would be really upset about the HOME issue. Only the rational PS3 users will be able to accept that its better to wait than get a glitchy/buggy online upgrade.

That would depend on the circumstances, but in general if the game holds promise then it should be delayed.

I've seen this Miyamoto quote before in sombody's signature:

"A bad game is bad forever, A delayed game is eventually good."
