Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - April 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch Vs. DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 134,994 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,571,547 - Switch

April 2023 is the 74th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 134,994 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 1.57 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 3.42 million units.

The 74th month for the Switch is April 2023, while for the DS it is January 2011. The Switch has sold 29.02 million units, while the DS sold 32.45 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 61.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 3.97 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

So from this point on DS sells just over 500k, Switch should sell at least 2m more this year (probably closer to 2.5m) bringing its total to 31-31.5m

Switch successor is pretty much guaranteed in FY2024, as Nintendo's fiscal report indicates no plans to release new hardware this year nor in Jan-Mar.

If Switch successor is released in Apr-Jun quarter 2024, and the launch of successor tanks Switch sales like DS when 3DS released then MAYBE Switch LTD will still fall short of DS. But IMO chances are high the Switch will be the first system to top 33m.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - April 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 410,525 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 3,429,219

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 3,022,082

April 2023 is the 30th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 105,903 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 410,525 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 407,137 units.

The 30th month for the PS5 in Japan is April 2023, while for the PS4 it is July 2016. The PS5 has sold 3.43 million units, while the PS4 sold 3.02 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 33.

The PS4 crossed 4 million in Japan in month 35, 5 million in month 41, and 6 million in month 47. The PS4 has sold 9.62 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 6.19 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - April 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

XSX|S Vs. X360 Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 24,947 - XSX|S

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 440,614

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 611,617

April 2023 is the 30th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 4,290 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox Series X|S has caught up to the Xbox 360 by 24,947 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 171,003 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 440,614 units in 30 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 611,617 units. Month 30 for the Xbox Series X|S is April 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is May 2008.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.22 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

The Wii launched in November 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. Wii US:

April 2023 is the 74th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Wii has outsold the Switch by 132,005 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 3.73 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Wii by 296,108 units.

The 74th month for the Nintendo Switch is April 2023 and for the Wii it is December 2012. The Switch has sold 40.95 million units, while the Wii sold 40.65 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 78.

The Wii sold 41.70 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 0.75 million units to outsell the Wii in the US.

April 2023 is the 74th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the DS by 4.15 million units when compared to the Switch during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the DS has outsold the Switch by 2.10 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 15.40 million units.

The 74th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is April 2023, while for the DS it is December 2010. The Switch has sold 125.06 million units, while the DS sold 140.45 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 28.96 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Switch.

April 2023 is the 30th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Nintendo Switch by 0.61 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the Switch by 0.71 million units. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 0.45 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 37.44 million units in 30 months, while the Nintendo Switch sold 36.99 million units. Month 39 for the PlayStation 5 is April 2023 and for the Nintendo Switch it is August 2019.

The Nintendo Switch crossed 40 million in month 33, 50 million in month 35, and 60 million in month 41. The Nintendo Switch has sold 123.91 million units through March 2023. The PS5 is 87.62 million units behind lifetime Switch sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

The Wii launched in Europe in December 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

April 2023 is the 74th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch outsold the Wii by 233,246 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 3.39 million units. The Switch is currently behind the Wii by 281,519 units.

The 74th month for the Nintendo Switch is April 2023 and for the Wii it is January 2013. The Switch has sold 31.91 million units, while the Wii sold 32.19 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 73.

The Wii sold 33.12 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 1.21 million units to outsell the Wii in Europe.

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 launched in the US in November 2005, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Nintendo Switch by 2.01 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Xbox 360 by 7.94 million units.

The 74th month for the Nintendo Switch is April 2023 and for the Xbox 360 it is December 2011. The Switch has sold 40.95 million units, while the Xbox 360 sold 33.01 million units during the same timeframe. The Xbox 360 sold current Switch sales in month 94.

The Xbox 360 sold 43.75 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 2.80 million units to outsell the Xbox 360 in the US.
