Sony very likely never planned to anyway, while they have the means to purchase a smaller publisher I doubt that they would commit to that much money.

Whether the appeal works or not, I don't see Microsoft going after another publisher of any significant size. Yes, even one the size of Sega. I can see them acquiring some independent studios like Certain Affinity or IO Interactive.

Better get on it before Tencent or Saudi Arabia..

Yeah, Sony won't acquire a major publisher, especially not now that the ABK is very likely dead and under these CMA arguments, it also kills Microsoft's ability to acquire most other major publishers so Sony will feel comfort in that.

Besides, Sony as the market leader has a much higher threshold to pass than Microsoft when it comes to SLC...Under FTC's new argument which pits the market as only Xbox/Sony, almost every major publisher acquisition should be blocked, Lol.

But I feel like Microsoft was laying the ground works for acquiring a Japanese publisher by twisting FTC's arguments back on them so we'll see where that goes.

We've yet to even see the full potential of Bethesda on Xbox, no Doom/Elder Scrolls/Wolfenstein, etc. So while Sony will continue to money-hat shit, Xbox has a lot of big guns for the future as well.

I've said it before but these ambitions for Microsoft were really something that "accidentally" fell in their lap, it was a potential to quickly go from 0-100 to grow the overall business massively rather than taking their time (which was likely the plan after Zenimax), likely they just revert back to the original plan.

I have to say as well that anyone who thinks Phil is being fired over this are being crazy. Put it this way, if Abk never had the scandals then Microsoft would never be acquiring them. Phil didn't sell the long term vision of Xbox on the basis of ABK. There are many other ways to compete.

I legitimately don't understand the CMA's decision. If there concern is cloud, what more could Xbox possibly have offered to assuage their concerns than they already did? Xbox had already made 4 different 10 year Xbox and ABK game deals with cloud companies covering approximately 40+% of the Cloud gaming marketshare between the 4 of them. How is that not good enough? The only significant cloud gaming competitors who didn't get the 10 year deal were Sony's PS+ cloud thing and Amazon's Luna, and Xbox was open to at least putting ABK games onto the Sony cloud service but were rejected by Sony, that is on Sony, not on MS. Short of making an Amazon Luna 10 year deal, I'm not sure what more Xbox can offer the CMA on the appeal to get this thing through?

^^Like others said, the real reason is Sony and console gaming, but they look dumb with this concern after the info MS put out, so they move on to a hypothetical what if situation years down the line. Much harder to argue what ifs.

Why on Earth would anybody in humankind ask what Pachter thinks of this after already failing to predict the actual outcome in the first place ?
