Zenimax Online as a whole could be up the creek without a paddle at this point, Elder Scrolls Online development seems to be winding down as the playerbase dwindles (once regularly in the top 50 most played games on Xbox when I would look a couple of years ago, it is currently down at #114), and now they have no game to transition into, making them a ripe target for a future full studio closure.

^

Fucking hell I don't understand how this is so complicated for some to understand, Lol.

I absolutely love The Elder Scrolls Online too but cancelling their next MMO is a braindead decision which increases the odds of Zenimax closing significantly.

The new MMO IP wasn't there only in development project though. At least according to their website.

I'm not even surprised at this point, I think we might as well expect Microsoft has cancelled their entire slate and started fresh with exception to things releasing in 2026. The company is only going to focus on sure mega hits moving forward and already successful GaaS. They've successfully transitioned into EA. Well done Satya for killing all creativity.

Was this before or after Commander Keen because they were working on that too.

What was the deal with Commander Keen? lol but that's what's on their website right now.

It was cancelled.

I expect either way the other "project" is just some mobile stuff.

There's little chance they were working on 3 MMOs at the same time, Lol.

Perfect Dark getting canned would be a pretty big indictment on MS imo. The one studio you spun up from the ground, in a sea of acquisitions, and even with tons of outsourcing to CD you now don't think you can get even just this one game out the door? Or that it won't be good if you did? Yikes

Yeah, even if they immediately begin development on another new IP, or an Elder Scrolls Online 2 on their new engine (so that it will have modern graphics instead of 2012 graphics), said new game will take 5 to 7 years to make. If Microsoft's bean counters decide at any point in the next 5 years or so that they need to layoff more employees, Zenimax Online will be among the most ripe targets for full studio closure. A studio whose next game is multiple years away, and whose current game has a low playerbase (ESO's has been steadily shrinking), is always going to hop off a page in neon ink to bean counters.

I'm not going to buy into Perfect Dark being cancelled yet. That's a much bigger property with a lot more expectations than Everwild, Contraband and unnamed MMO.

It's at least had one real gameplay reveal so far, more than those other games and even Fable.

NateTheHate agrees. Unfortunately for Jez, the last thing he does is wait for confirmation before speaking lol
