Final Fantasy XIV development began in 2005 and it released in September 2010, it took 5 years to make, and it was released in a horrific state, which resulted in them soft-rebooting the entire thing and adding even more development time. World of Warcraft was in development for 4-5 years.

So now when your average non-MMO AAA takes about 4-5 years to make, it is expected that MMOs would also significantly increase in development time, 7-10 years for an MMO would not be out of the ordinary for an MMO today.

There was absolutely nothing weird about how long Zenimax's MMO was in development for.

It's dumb to cancel the MMO that would have carried Zenimax for the next 10 years as The Elder Scrolls Online was winding down.

Fuck a release....how about an announcement? A teaser? Closed alphas or pre-alphas to get player feedback? Word of even internal demos or anything to demonstrate this is morphing into a real, tangible product? Games these days get announced just to help hire for projects, and this game had nothing. 

How many years would you be willing to fund a project before it, apparently, even remotely begins to take shape into something I can maybe foresee then spending further marketing budget on it, and then selling it? If 7 years to doesn't get me a reveal trailer, I'm sorry, but that's a money hole if you ask me

All this move does is makes me worried about Zenimax Online, I play The Elder Scrolls Online and it's pretty obvious they were moving into a more agile mode which typically means less major content drops, which typically means a winding down, aka Halo Infinite, I was fine with that as The Elder Scrolls Online has almost filled out its entire map and I've had my fill of great stories.

To me, I was ready for a sequel to The Elder Scrolls Online with the NEW ENGINE THEY WERE BUILDING but I was hoping they would release this New IP MMO first and then that would take over as their "10 year plan" while they work on a sequel to The Elder Scrolls Online.

What do they do now? Triple down on The Elder Scrolls Online and change their plans? Well they better hope they can keep people interested in TESO for the next 10 years because that's when their next MMO will be releasing, can people tell me honestly they think The Elder Scrolls Online can keep enough interest for 10 years? MMOs are fucking expensive to maintain.

I'm unconvinced, I love the game and the stories told but I'm a massive Elder Scrolls lore fan and ESO does feel very outdated in gameplay, now another 10 years of that and I feel like a lot of people play it simply because they're Elder Scrolls fans and Elder Scrolls has so few releases, it does not scratch the Elder Scrolls itch completely though and when the next Elder Scrolls releases they will move onto that, I also think in terms of being an "MMO" both WoW and XIV are better than it in that regard.

You do know you are making a bunch of assumptions.  For all you know it could have been Greg himself who wanted off of the project to go do something else and was happy to be giving a chance to drop this game.  Without any real information on the issue all you are doing is making major speculation on no real info.

I really don't think you guys are understanding just how complex and big MMOs are, and how you need to stick the landing perfectly to get a large enough fanbase to maintain it and have years of content planned post-launch too.

MMOs in the early 2000s were already taking 4-5 years of development! How can you see that and completely ignore the fact that videogames, ALL VIDEOGAMES have significantly increased in development times since 2005! Lol.

Kind of a big difference between early and 7 years in dev....like how many years do you wanna give them? Like genuinely, if you were running a business, how many years are you funding a game that wasn't ready to be announced after 7? Cus if we take the industry standard of most games, that get announced at least 1-2 years out, and then often get pushed back another 6-12 month, that means even if this game had been announced this summer, it probably would have been in dev another 2 years minimum. So judging by the fact that it wasn't in fact ever revealed officially, it needs what...another 3 years minimum? Probably more. And for a new IP at that if I understand correctly. Not like you're working on a Fallout MMO that's guaranteed attention no matter what. Sometimes you gotta know when to say no.
