Sony must be doing something wrong to have their profits so low. I wonder what’s causing most of the losses 

Lots of moneyhats, and many of their first party games have quite high budgets as well, as I recall TLOU 2 was rumored to have one of the top 10 highest game budgets of all-time for instance, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Horizon and GoW are at least top 20 most expensive. Wouldn't be surprised if PS5 hardware is pretty heavily subsidized as well, especially on PS5 digital.

Late but what's 5 Japanese titles that would make you happy to see at TGS (not franchises but individual games) 

Mine are

1. Final Fantasy VIIR - Feel like this one is unlikely asf but fuck it. Probably the biggest one missing on xbox

2. Grandia - also not that likely, the HD vers didn't even release on playstation but god damn it's a great game

3. Digimon World: Next Order - Might be an odd choice but I have huge nostalgia for RPG Digimon games, xbox has yet to get a mainline Digimon game... Given it was also recently released on other platforms... why not xbox? Please Bamco 

4. Star Ocean second Story R - This game looks so pretty, widely considered the best in the series.

5. Final Fantasy Pixel remasters - idk I just really want to play 6 on xbox lol

there's other games I would like from Ys, Atelier, Trails, etc.

If his estimates are correct, VGChartz may be under tracking Xbox by close to a million units given the 1-2 month lag versus shipped/sold.  

Hardware is a slim margin business, and frequently a loss leader. Sony is huge in that regard.

Sony makes a lot of incredibly high budget games that go on extensive sales. They make plenty of money, but they are relatively slim margin games. It's a big reason why they're trying so hard to make live service titles; so they can have something that basically prints money the same way that Fortnite does for Epic Games or WoW has for Blizzard, Genshin Impact for MiHoYo (MiHoYo has an absurd 60% profit margin) or all the other examples. Quite a few of the publishers have at least one thing like that, that consistently makes them money. Sony has Destiny now, but that came with almost $4 billion price tag. They don't (yet?) have anything like that, that was home grown. 

This doesn't particularly mean that they're doing anything wrong. Any more than MS having a lower profit margin than Nintendo means they're doing something wrong. Or Nintendo having a lower profit margin than MiHoYo means Nintendo is doing something wrong. 

Yeah, I think gaming might just be a low-margin business especially when you're a platform holder due to consoles and acquiring content. Do we know how much Sony spends on game development? According to the leaks, we know MS spends about $1 billion on games each FY. Wonder how that stacks up with Sony since like you mentioned they spend a lot on their AAA games.

You should tag the people who actually play Japanese games on xbox.
