The FTC just said Imagine if you can only get a cool thing like a character skin on Xbox, but not on PlayStation. What would that be like?
— Destin (@DestinLegarie) June 22, 2023
Me: I dunno sounds a lot like what PlayStation has done the last 6 years...
Yeah it's really bad. I'm in the same boat of not caring either way about this deal going through but just hearing people in such powerful positions having quite literally zero understanding of how the video game industry operates is a tough hang

Okay they found him, here we go, don't fuck up Matt, no pressure.
Matt Booty in the witness stand. FTC attorney Jennifer Fleury now asking him questions about his responsibilities at Xbox.

56/44 is pretty close to VGC's numbers at least, I think I got 56.5% vs 43.5% when I did VGC's numbers. Interesting that Microsoft disagrees with them. Either way, the numbers make FTC's attempts to stop the deal look bad, their own ratio shows Xbox down by over 3m units in their strongest market, PS5 is beating them even worse in probably every other market. Xbox needs this deal to go through just to maybe catch up to PS5 in Xbox's strongest market, it certainly won't turn the tide of the console war on a worldwide basis.

Yikes on bikes. Did the FTC do no research whatsoever? Sony has been paying for exclusive skins and other content in 3rd party games since at least 2016, quite possibly longer (I remember them hatting exclusive AC Syndicate content in 2016, but they may have been hatting exclusive content in 3rd party games even before that), and the FTC didn't even know that Sony has been making use of that anti-competitive practice that entire time? What a useless organization.
The FTC lawyer seemed to do a 'decent' job at trying to bait Matt Booty into agreeing with them, trying to make him admit that Switch is a different market to Xbox, by using Halo as an example that a port to Switch would be a significantly different experience on Xbox, I think Booty just about got through it, Lol.
(Essentially FTC is trying to show that Call of Duty on Switch could be a significantly different experience than it is on, say, Xbox or PlayStation by using Halo as an example)

Evidence shows that Xbox was to remove Bethesda games from Nvidia shortly after acquisition.

"Were not putting our first-party IP on competing streaming or competing subscription services," Booty had written in an email.
"No F-ing way"

Microsoft counsel is now questioning Booty.

The emails were from 2019.
We were discussing lots of options and the best way to go forward as the landscape changes in our business.
Microsoft lawyer asking Matt Booty whether anything has changed since those 4Q2019 emails regarding the relationship with Nvidia. Matt Booty mentions Microsoft has meanwhile signed various agreements including the one with Nvidia.

XGS is separate from ZeniMax. ZeniMax does not report to Booty. ZeniMax reports directly to Phil Spencer.

Xbox has spent well over $10 billion on acquisitions and game dev over the past few years. That has not been able to change Sony's advantage.
