Forums - Sales - NPD vs VGC (Q1 2008)

Aren't the numbers still retrofitted?

I am asking because if you just checked the numbers they are post-fixing. In order to track the accuracy, you need to make a spreadsheet and update weekly.

I have to ask, for the NPD numbers, is the total version actually USA + Canada or is it just USA X 1.1?
It seems that the PS3 and 360 are exactly 10% higher than their USA only number, but the Wii is not for some reason.

If youwere using USA X 1.1 then you have to take into account that Canada isn't always 10% each time, the last Canada NPD numbers I can remember (November I think) were slightly in favour of Wii and 360, but it could have changed since then and be in favour of Wii and PS3 (in percentage terms not numbers)

Actually I am not certain, but the NPD data I assume you are using (Jan+Feb+Mar) should in fact coincide with different VGC numbers than what you have. I think December NPD ran into January (week ending 5th Jan was in December NPD)  so that the VGC weeks you should use are these: (both dates are for the week ending on that date)

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 12th Jan 2008 to 05th Apr 2008:

ConsoleWiiPS3X360
America
1,597,386
917,071
918,485

so to compare with NPD USA

Wii - 1426
PS3 -  806.8
360 - 746.6

(multiplying by 1.1 because I don't know the Canada numbers)

Console Wii PS3 360
 VGC 1,597,386 917,071 918,485
 NPD*1.1 1,568,600 887,480 821,260
 discrepancy +1.84% +3.33% +11.84%

This may not be totally accurate because I do not know the preferences of the Canadians (they may buy more than 10% of American 360s, which would put the numbers closer)
However it does show that VGC is incredibly close for both PS3 and Wii, and ioi has maintained for a while that NPD undertracks 360 so the increase there makes sense.

And for DS and PSP:

console DS PSP
 VGC 1,773,355 903,387
 NPD 1,536,600 770,100
 NPD*1.1 1,690,260 847,110
 discrepancy +4.92% +6.64%

Though once again I do not know specific NPD Canada numbers and I believe Canada much preferes the DS compared to PSP, which would mean VGC is even closer for DS but possibly more overtracking the PSP.

NIce work Krik, our site is correct, we will show that to all detractors.

You might want to check my post as it uses the correct VGC numbers... krik made what is a common mistake (owing to NPDs annoying method of tracking) of using weeks that NPD counts in other months...Admitedly being only 1 week skewed doesn't make much difference as VGC is very close anyway, but for accuracies sake.

Good table, krik. Good tracking ioi.

Don't forget that America is more than just Canada + USA which may add another 3-5% to most numbers as well. Also Canada as a percentage of USA isn't exactly 10% etc etc

Exactly, November Canada NPD was barely 7% of USA, (so adding the other countries, Mexico etc would bring it to about 10%)

However that may have been due to thanksgiving, which presumably gives a bigger US boost than Canada.

Does no one have a link to the Canada data for this year? because I am having trouble finding it, I do remember they released January hardware at least, and I thought they had released February but I could be wrong, that would at least give an insight into how each console does in Canada compared to USA.

ps3 is doing pretty weel,

ps3 is doing very well this year
