Forums - Sales - NPD vs VGC (Q1 2008)

Some data comparing NPD and VGC for 2008 I think it's worth sharing.

Wii:

VGChartz = 1,569,700

NPD = 1,575,179 (1,427,000 USA only)

Difference = 0.35% -> Right on the ball

PS3:

VGChartz = 939,195

NPD = 887,480 (806,800 USA only)

Difference = 5.51% -> Over tracked by VGC buy well within the "10% margin of error" (51k difference)

X360:

VGChartz = 982,448

NPD = 821,260 (746,600 USA only)

Difference = 16.41% -> Way over tracked by VGC. A massive 161,188 units or 16.41% over NPD numbers.

2008 market share as per NPD:

Wii = 47.9%

PS3 = 27.0%

X360 = 25.0%

2008 market share as per VGC:

Wii = 45.0%

PS3 = 26.9%

X360 = 28.0%

Please feel free to comment and let me know if you find anything wrong with the numbers.

Did you make an error with the 360 %, because you have it the exact same as the PS3 %, but in one you wrote overtracked, within 10%, but in the other you wrote way overtracked? Or am I understanding this incorrectly?

He has the correct percentage after that, I think the 5.51 was just a mistake.

Just wondering, are you using the current VGC numbers?

some of the A** holes from neogaf should come and see this and die in silence and shame for accusing ioi for being WAYYY off,,,which is BS

Ok, that's what I thought, but it seemed odd.

I'm assuming he's using the numbers from January 1st, till March 31, since it says Q1 (2008).

ioi has always felt that NPD undertracks the 360, so you can expect more large differentials between NPD and VGChartz in the future when it comes to that platform.

Yeah, I meant current though as in what the numbers are now versus what they were originally.

Damn it.  That reminds me, I had a spreadsheet of all the sales (original and adjusted) for this year of the PS3/wii/360.  But I forgot to back it up when I tried to restore my computer.

Ah, ok. Aren't any changes that are made to the #'s reflected when you look for the dates? I suppose if he tabulated them himself, like you had done, then it wouldn't be the current numbers. And too bad about you losing that data.........pretty useful stuff.

But don't you know? According to them its only because ioi updates his numbers after the fact!!! /sarcasm Either way their argument makes no sense. In one breath they will tell you that everything is worthless and in the next they will say "They're only as close as they are because they copy the 'professional' numbers.".

@Krik,

I didn't do a thorough background on your data or anything but everything looks to be in pretty good order. Good work, especially including the US only numbers so that it was unambigous that everything was taken into account.
