Forums - Sales - Switch Sales Top 100 Million - Global Hardware Dec 11 to 18

With the momentum the Switch currently has and this year's lineup I feel like it should be too soon to focus on the next system.

Barring disastrous circumstances this should be another year of over 20 million hardware sales, as well as possibly the strongest software lineup the system has ever had, combining the first party heavy hitters of 2017 with a much stronger slate of third party releases.

Personally, I'd rather enjoy what we have now and in the imminent future than rush ahead.

I know many of you are looking forward to the next hardware update for the week ending December 25. However, data I use to do the weekly hardware numbers are unsurprisingly late. We don't even have Famitsu data yet. So, the next update likely won't come out for a few more days unless I get the data sooner.

Understandable. Somewhat related, but when are the December and end of year NPD numbers supposed to come out? Mid January?

Based on the current momentum of Switch, the delayed first party development pipeline due to the pandemic and the above reasoning for launch timing, Nintendo's current target for a Switch successor should be holiday 2024 anyway. If they perceive it as feasible to extend Switch's lifecycle with a Pro-like SKU, then the planned launch date for Switch's successor could be pushed back to holiday 2025. After all, Nintendo's workforce expansion with new buildings is only now in 2022 happening, so the fruits of that labor won't show up anytime soon.

I expect the successor comes out in 2025 as it's in line with both Nintendo repeatedly saying they are now in the middle of Switch's life and with the sales trajectory of the Switch: 2022 another 20+ mil. year and 2023 possibly another good year.

Nintendo needs to push out Switch successor launch as much as reasonably possible.
It needs to try and get the best tech possible for a reasonable price so it can get some of the PS5/XSX multiplats.

That may take a while. Unless it’s as powerful as an Xbox Series S (but now with game cards/discs) that doesn’t explode while in handheld mode. Nor doesn’t bleed Nintendo money come launch year.

Tbh I can see a March 2025 release happening as I think they'll have at least also have 2023 covered and that a 2025 release allows them a good amount of time to prepare a good line up for example I can see Mario Kart 9 launching on release.

I’m hoping they can achieve that by the final quarter of 2024.
I think there’s a market for some games to appear on both systems that run a bit better on the successor to help fill out the new system games library. We’re seeing PS4 and Xbox One continue to get big games this way with God of War Ragnarok probably being the last to take this approach that I can think of.
