My ps4 copy is coming and I'm unsure if I should return it or not. I'm not sure I should give it a go on ps4 pro.

Enhanced consoles and next generation seem to deliver a good experience. It's an awesome game and I recommend it to anyone.

Open Critic has already dropped to 87 - good!

"The game may not be perfect but given CD project Red's reputation for fixing and updating games Cyberpunk has a bright neon-lit future." from Daily Mirror review summary - then continues to give it a perfect score. Many other reviews like this. Utter nonsense!

That was to be expected. Open Critic lumps reviews for all platforms together instead of keeping track of separate meta's for each platform. Since the console versions are a mess on base last gen hardware, it was to be expected that Open Critic score would drop as console reviews start to come in. The fact that the PC score has stayed at 90 on metacritic is a good sign, gives us a good baseline of the level of quality to expect on the console versions after optimization. If the game gets rereviewed on PS5 and Xbox Series once the free next gen optimizations hit next year, it's a safe bet they will review over 90, because they'll not only have much better graphics, but months worth of bug fixes and free DLC by that point.

They're right though, CD Projekt does have a good track record of fixes and updates. Witcher 1 and 2 both got definitive edition rereleases with many improvements. Witcher 3 released in a pretty buggy state, and also had performance issues, but was patched and improved alot in the months after release. CD Projekt also gave Witcher 3 a wave of free DLC updates, which included alternate outfits, new questlines, and more, and they are doing the same for Cyberpunk. They are also working on a multiplayer Cyberpunk game that will be free for all purchasers of Cyberpunk 2077.

That's not the point I was trying to make.  The point was reviewers shouldn't be giving perfect scores to games they admit are not perfect with the hopes of the developer fixing them down the line.  A game should be reviewed and scored on the state it is in upon release - not on future promises.  It sets a very sad precedent for other future games to release in a broken state.

I got this in yesterday in mint condition and will leave it wrapped in its original plastic, now I want another to read.  Snagged for 24 dollars.  Can't wait to get the Series X game version when it releases later.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

Why did this game get such high score?

Because the PC version is great, and these were PC only reviews, CD Projekt didn't send out early review copies for console. Console reviews are starting to come in now and they are much lower, because the console version is a mess unless you are playing on PS4 Pro/PS5 or XB1 X/XSS/XSX.

Is it really? As more people start finishing the game, more reviews like this pop up:

Twice Finished - Hardest Difficulty - Review
A disappointing end to a long wait....

Main Story: 7.6/10
Side quests: 4.4/10
Voice Acting: Female V : 9/10
Male V : 5.5/10
Main Cast : 7/10
Choices & Consequences: 4/10
Dialogue: 8/10
Combat Mechanics: 5.8/10
Skill Tree & Attributes: 3.5/10
Customization: 5/10
Music & Sound: 9/10
RPG elements: 3/10
Graphics (RTX ON): 9/10
Driving Mechanics: 7/10
Overall Score: 6.5/10

Conclusion: (Before we start i will not be discussing bugs/performance because i had no performance issues and only 1-2 bugs for my entire play through, also these things may be patched down the line)

Cyberpunk feels rushed. the combat feels clunky, old and underwhelming , the skill trees are a wholly unbalanced mess, the main story is extremely compressed and full of hours of exposition for character building whilst simultaneously trying to progress and overarching narrative. The side missions are boring, unfun and offer next to nothing in terms of involvement or story progression.

The Female V is a superior voice actor in almost every instance, I would highly recommend playing the Female V over the Male V as her performance outshines him across the board, she has far more emotional range and has a concept for conversational value throughout. Her performance overall improves the game significantly from a voice acting standpoint.

The RPG mechanics are missing entirely, with much of the dialogue choices being meaningless and only several specific side quests having an impact on the ending credits. Whilst the main story choices are affected by only a few choices which will all lead to one of 5 different endings. I finished the game on the hardest difficulty with the same revolver i found 2 hours into the game because of the utterly broken skills trees. doing 85000 damage on a head shot to Adam Smasher on very hard or effectively one shotting him and every enemy from level 5 onward, Whilst im not a fan of this due to the way "difficulty is handled" it made it feel one of the better ways to play. Because whilst regular enemies would be one shot, bosses would need several showing the unbalanced nature of scaling. The armor system also appears to significantly nerfed in harder difficulties, whilst it would reduce damage taken by a tiny amount in some cases just 5-20% (i think its actually broken), wearing nothing vs armor is barely noticeable.

Other disappointing things to note were customization, cyber-ware and general weapon choices. Cyber ware is rather limited, with simple passive upgrades generally speaking and if you specced into intel quick hacks, although its much easier to just build reflexes and shoot everyone if you plan on fighting at all. The lack of meaningful customization makes upgrading your character feel rather weak and pointless, the only cyber-ware i found useful was the double jump simply because you cant reach some places without it. The skill trees are even worse, offering around 90% passive upgrades with no significant changes to your play style of game play.

Other noteworthy issues are stealth, stealth whilst it can be played effectively and work rather well its actually a large downside because you will lose out on the loot you would get for killing everyone and subsequently getting less money for cars, upgrades etc.

Driving mechanics are rather good in certain vehicles and make up for those that feel really poor. I play on a M&KB and i think these are some better driving mechanics over other comparable games.

A mess of combat mechanics and skill trees are really exacerbated on harder difficulties and it shows, the game play feels weaker and weaker the harder you make it and the skill trees, attributes, armor and clothing systems all feel really badly implemented and designed. And when it comes to grinding out side quests these are the fundamental parts you see the most which hurt the game even further. The somewhat decent main story and dialogue hold together what is essentially a poor quality game up.

The Enemy AI as well as civilian AI is utterly dreadful not much to say here, but its badly implemented, badly designed and functions poorly in the world.

Subsequently i cannot recommend this game as it currently stands.

[notes] The main story line is approx 12-18 hours long depending on your end choice
[notes] I dont think a game being better than other mediocre/poor quality games makes it an overall better experience.

Added later:

I left out my opinions on the world because they are conflicted. On one hand they have created a great visual experience, which in itself offers a rather immersive view, however, the lack of interactivity, events, unique things going on and general fluidity to it leaves it feeling hollow and empty because of this its hard to really place a score on it or a value. Because i think to myself, if this was 2020 or 2000 what difference would it make in the world of cyberpunk, and honestly they way the game follows the technology it could be any time period because there is no significant relation to body modification, just that it exists and some have more than others.

It's all flash with good story telling, they should have made a movie instead.

Well there's a first:

This is why they shouldn't combine the platforms and instead, have separate scores for different platforms similar to metacritic.

The irony is that PC is usually the platform to get the bad optimization when this happens, not the other way around.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

It's still poorly optimized on PC, simply overshadowed by the train wreck on the base consoles.
There are already 2,492 Technical 'discussions' on Steam for Cyberpunk (vs for example FS2020 252 PC & hardware discussions)

Open world games automatically start from a base 90 score, didn't you know that?
