Forums - Gaming - What kind of Sales Numbers makes a Game BOMB?

hi.

was just wonering what kind of sales numbers do you think make a game bomb

in my opinion if an average game reaches 500k+ in sales then its been respectable, with further time sales could reach higher.

my idea of a game bombing would be -100k

whats your opinion?

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Sales numbers WELL BELOW the games excpectatione.

example:

GTA IV selling ONLY 2 million (PS3 + 360 combined) would = BOMB even though 2 million is awesome for normal games...

while say A new IP gaining only 10K in sales would = BOMB...

but the same new IP doing 2 million wouldn't = a bomb because expectations weren't high..

depends, a game on the wii could (in theory) already be at a break even point at 100k. While a x360/ps3 game needs to hit 300-400k before it hits that point. It all depends on budgets, expectations , development costs and marketing.

well like i said, it depends on the budget for that game. If a game costs 1/10th of what GTAIV costs, it only needs 1/10th of GTAIV sales to get a profit eventually.

@Neos

ok...I thought on average it was 700K

I think it's all about the minimum expectations of the publisher... Even when we don't know what those expectations are, we can often say that the game probably  bombed (if there are reasons to believe that minimum expectations were higher).

It depends on the hype, the higher it is the bigger possibility it will fail

different titles with different expectations.

depends a lot on development cycle.

the only ones to gauge the "success" meter properly are the devs themselves.

the rest of us are just white noise.

If an average is 700K, that means that some must be less to bring the average down to that and some games it's more.  It's not the same for eery game...
