You are wrong. They said the system can always run in boost mode. It will drop frequency if the game in question doesn't require that power.

Thanks for the info, was basing my assumption solely off of the specs sheet that Digital Foundry released. Turned off the live presentation after 7 minutes because Mark Cerny was putting me to sleep xD

No problem. When they say boost mode it is reasonable to confuse that with something that is for a short period and could have a big impact on cooling.

The entire idea of the cooling on PS5 is always being sure how much heat it will generate so power consumption will always be the same and frequency will varies depending on the load.

I found the presentation very interesting, my wife slept and complained no console show =p

We have a verdict yet?

What other BC were you expecting?  Buying old games digitally inst real BC. Just rereleasing.

It doesnt rule out PS1,PS2,PS3.... but if it could do that, I expect he would have mentioned it.
I was hopeing they would talk about PS3 as well, and say it could do that.

Now im kinda expecting that it maybe wont be able to.

I'm asking why expect that? Ps3 and older games arent veing sold anymore.

So... only PS4 backwards compatibility. Well, I guess that settles it. Series X it is.

Also, they shouldn't have advertised this for everyone. This was so technical and so boring... what they were thinking?

Just to be clear, PS5 will have PS4 backwards compat at a hardware mode level.  Whereas pretty sure the xbox plan is BC at the software emulation level.

Was anyone seriously thinking BC beyond previous gen, like seriously?

Honestly, I don't give a damn about how they achieve the compatibility. Emulation or native, I don't care. I just want to be able to have a PS2 disk and play it on a PS5. If I have do copy or download the game on the SSD, that is almost a non issue for me (although granted, it would be better if it played directly from the disk).

Why wouldn't I think of this possibility? PS5 can run any previous PS console with its dick. It's not some kind of impossible or titanic effort. It's even almost too easy: PS1 and PS2 could run on an emulator just with brute force (an emulator they already created for the PS1 Classic and the PS2 titles for PS4 on the Store). PS3 is the only problematic one because thanks to it being weird as fuck, there is still not a good emulator for it. But that's pretty much the only thing they had to work on: a PS3 emulator. Being made by Sony themselves, the ones who know the machine better than anyone, it doesn't even seem that hard. And PS4 is compatible natively, so no problems here.

So yeah... it's something perfectly expectable.

Boreing show.

PS5 is like 15% slower than the Xbox series X.

Slightly faster SSD on the Playstation 5, but smaller size than the 1TB they Series X comes with.

With more CUs you can run more tasks in parallel which is important for GPUs, but of course Cerny decided not to mention it. Guys who work in game dev are laughing at all this "higher clock" is better stuff because actually it is better to have more CUs than run them at higher frequency.

Nonsense. If you want to badtalk Cerny, you could have mentioned the "async compute" card which obviously is better with more cus.

All in all, I think both consoles are very interesting and more different among themselves than the PS4 and the XBox One. Here's to hoping for a 2020 release.

You think their lack of showmanship was counterproductive?

And only PS4 BC???? Good to know MS has them beat on this point. So many 360 gems I’ve yet to play in my back catalog. I’m sure the same goes for those who had a PS3

No, PS5 has 15% less "power" in the cus. What that means is anyone's guess. Cerny sounded quite confident he made the right choice, time will tell.

As for ssd size, we have no idea how much uf that 1TB/825GB is actually usable for games.

Honestly I said before, I dont really care how fast things are.
I want cheap.... If sony can be 100$ cheaper than the series X, thats a win in my book.
