All I'll say on that subject is that oppressed groups have a tendency to adopt phrases previously (or still) used in a derogatory manner. They use them either with a sense of pride (i.e. "Yeah, we're tough cause we've been through this") or in comradery or brotherhood (we all insult our friends).
