Forums - Microsoft - MS: 1st party Xbox games will be cross-gen for "next year, two years"

I don't think more shit on the screen means they're ahead as enjoyable games. They may also have less actual content then notable cross gen games. I think that's the point.

Nobody said anything about next gen games being more enjoyable by default, just because they were designed with far more powerful specs in mind. From what I've seen, Godfall looks pretty terrible and I don't see it selling better or getting more critical acclaim at all than games like Halo Infinite, TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, FF7 etc. We simply don't know if the launch titles will be any good. However, what we do know for certainty is that even the ps5 exclusive launch titles will be a generational leap over what we're seeing today. And sure, games can be scalable, but that all depends on how developers decide to push these next gen specs. If they would spend all resources on native 4k and 120fps, then yes, you could literally flip a switch and have the exact same game running on current gen consoles at 1080p/30fps. But if that's all people wanted, I'm sure the ps4 pro and X1X would have sold a lot better.

The only reason I'm ranting like this for 2 weeks now is because I'm struggling to understand the logic behind MS's next gen strategy. Surely they should aim to showcase the best possible graphics on their new console, so why make sure their games also work on Xone in the first place? Is it really because they don't want to screw over Xone owners? Because frankly, which Xone owners? Their console was a failure and imo they should just pretend this gen never happened. And if they think it's a good idea, why stop supporting the Xone after 1 or 2 years? Wouldn't that just create some weird stop gap and defeat the whole purpose of reaching a broader audience, especially if Series X sales have been lackluster? This is why I'm betting the 1 or 2 years of cross-gen games isn't written in stone. It will depend on when Series X like specs will be main-stream on pc and the bulk of GP users, or when XCloud really becomes a thing. Which could be 1, 2 or 5 years from now.

The thing is not all cross gen games will just be a performance and resolution upgrade. There is also potential for significantly better effects and assets 8th gen couldn't handle. Whether or not some 8th gen versions will lack features is unknown.

The problem with PS4 Pro is it wasn't a big upgrade. Mostly just GPU power. The X1X was a better upgrade especially if you want better than a base X1 is doing. Regardless, mid gen upgrades are still very limited compared to what 9th gen specs can do. Then you have SSD tech which may give a huge edge to 9th gen versions of games.

In the end X1 will probably sell about 50 million units. That isn't really a failure, it's viable. I think Vita and Wii U in comparison were objective failures.

I don't think it's a good idea to neglect X1 users as you're suggesting. I suppose MS wants to retain many of the Gold and Gamepass subscriptions on X1 as users eventually migrate.

Maybe MS looked at its games coming the near future and determined they can all function on X1. While games that truly push next gen specs are slated for later, like 2022.

Even years into the 8th gen we saw countless games that didn't look beyond the scale of what 7th gen had accomlished. It was mostly 7th gen-ish content with better graphics. Maybe MS looked at trends and felt supporting X1 for 2020 and 2021 is feasible.

And again, 3rd parties are also there is they have ideas for 9th gen exclusives. But we both know most will make cross gen content as well given modern engines are built to scale.

“So while I get that MS doesn't have a big AAA franchise ready as a Series X launch game”

Sigh....did you just imply that Halo Infinite isn’t a AAA franchise that won’t drive system sales of the Xbox brand?

To CGI Quality: this is ridiculous. If I went on a PS forum and said X AAA launch game won’t drive PS hardware I’d be banned within 10 minutes

Nah in a PS forum I don't think you would be banned for that.

But Halo doesn't sell like it used to be nowadays. And it will be available on PC AND Xbox One ! So it won't help that much the next Xbox.

-------------------

To tell you the truth it's a good thing, I'm tired of FPS/shooting games, I hope it will sell less nowadays. That's why I'm happy that Naughty Dog are doing The Last Of Us instead of Uncharted and Guerrilla doing Horizon Zero Dawn instead of Killzone. It's way more interesting.

I appreciate that. I was given a warning for comparing Forza and GT Sport metacritics in my favour so going off that you get the idea lol.

I can understand how Halo looks on the outside. Within the Halo community there is a general optimism that Halo is going back to the old trilogy in terms of design and general inspiration. But the more obvious factor is that this is a launch title 5 years in the making and all Ms marketing will have Halo and Series X go hand in hand.

In general the FPS genre is bigger then the TPS genre and there will be a custom Halo console. Usually I wait 1-2 years to make the jump but Ms has me by the balls here and I’m ok with that :)

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I meant as a exclusive Series X launch game. Obviously Halo Infinite is a great franchise that could push Series X console sales, but not if people can also play it on Xone or mainstream pc.

I’d argue that late adopter XB1 gamers and PC gamers weren’t gonna buy a Series X anyway at launch. Just more game sales potential for MS.

And it is exclusive. There is no PS version so for all intents and purposes for anybody on the fence it is a Xbox exclusive.

To still telling you the truth I don't like simulator racing games anymore (I have GT and Forza but I don't play it anymore). ^^

Yes I know they are die hard Halo fans like you so I'm not worry about Infinite of course. I know it will still sell well.

Eh, it'll move units. Now, as to how many? Well, I do think a lot of people will skip buying a Series X strictly for it if they can continue to use their X1s and still play the game (or get it on PC). Folks like myself are rare (I plan to buy a Series X despite building PCs in excess of $5,000), but they do exist and will help drive unit sales alongside those Xbox One fans ready to move on and ditch the old hardware.

It is a best case scenario to include a Halo game at launch when dealing with a juggernaut like the PS5.

Well yeah, it'll move units but just not the kind of boost if MS made it a Series-X exclusive and a technical showcase for the platform. Personally, I don't think Sony won this generation by a landslide because they did such a great job or because of brand loyalty. It was MS's identity crisis and their focus on a bigger picture that ultimately alienated the 360 fanbase, who in turn switched camps to the ps4.

Sony does tend to have weak launch titles and if MS came out with the most powerful console; a (bundled) full blown next gen Halo game at launch, and kept the momentum going, I don't see why they couldn't beat the ps5 or at least be competitive. I just don't get why they aren't doing that lol.

First time I almost agreed with everything you said. Xbox One was overpriced, underpowered, pushed casual mandatory peripherals, and didn’t make gaming their primary focus.

That isn’t repeating this time. Lockhart is price, Series X is power for the whole gen, no casual services, and no TV push.

Your second paragraph made total sense...so how come the last sentence came to a different conclusion? haha. We are getting a full blown bundled Halo at launch. Both sides can only give a taste of what’s to come at launch anyway right so I guess thank you for kiiiinda acknowledging that Xbox will be competitive this time around.

Well that's something at least :) I think if the 360 vs ps3 era showed us anything its that gamers aren't that loyal to a console brand. The ps2 was the most successful console in history, yet the 360 was beating the ps3 early on. The reason is that in the end gamers care most about the games. Sure, Sony made some mistakes with pricing and their Cell technology, but more importantly it was because MS focused on just great games. Pretty early on they had titles like Mass Effect, Horizon 2 and Gears of War, which they released on almost the exact same day the ps3 came out. That is the MS I want to see.

Everything was going great for the 360 until MS made a complete u-turn in strategy and went after a bigger goal with Kinect. Now I know Kinect and GP are two entirely different things. And yes, there are core games on GP and it's great value. But fact remains MS is again not focusing on their next gen console/ core audience and are again looking at a bigger picture. Now, hopefully you will prove me wrong and Halo Infinite will look like a completely different game on Series X. But I just don't see it looking truly next gen compared to the X1X and Xone versions, let alone the ps5 exclusives. I'm sure MS knows this and that's my whole point. They care more about GP and their services than how many Series X's they're going to sell. If that means the Series X won't get the best version technically possible on that platform, it's a sacrifice they are seemingly willing to make.

Short answer: The Slipspace engine alone will go a long way to differentiate Halo Infinite from others.
You leave pushing Series X to MSs more-then-capable marketing department. We long established that both companies can only give a taste at launch  of what’s to come in the coming years. Given that, higher meta score >>> system potential.

Soooo ya, at the risk of continuing a back and forth again, think we good :)

A full blown next gen Halo game at launch?

What makes a full blown next gen game? Exclusivity? A game designed to push next gen specs? Maybe a game that seems impossible on the previous gen? MS could simply treat the Series X version as the definitive console experience as well as other cross gen releases. Maybe even bundle it for early adopters as an incentive.

And again, you keep stressing the importance of 9th gen exclusives. Yet you seem to forget cross gen games dominated X1 and PS4 software sales early on. Hence, just having access to better versions of cross gen games clearly appeals to people.
