Forums - Microsoft - MS: 1st party Xbox games will be cross-gen for "next year, two years"

Just a reminder, disagreement is fine but please keep the conversation somewhat civil in here.

I’d prefer you lock it :)

A lot of us are getting tired copying and pasting the same responses to certain people

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I'm just saying that the only way I see MS doing that is if they make it super clear why people should spend a $100 or $200 premium on their console.

$100 or $200 premium compared to what? To the competing console (PS5)? Or to the predecessor (Xbox One X)?

And they should showcase that right out of the gate. Not 2 years later when Sony already released a ton a of ps5 exclusives that look better than anything MS has on their series X.

How much is a ton of PS5 exclusives?#

And why do you think most of Sony's PS5-releases won't be cross-gen games and remasters?

Let's have a look at the SCEA releases of the first PS4 years:

Well that just settles the argument here and now. Sony incredibly guilty of the same practice. Thanks for doing the homework :)

Holy shit look at all of that cross gen PS4 stuff. I had no idea it was that rampant. But hey lets not forget it's entirely different when it's Microsoft.

........did you see what's crosgen? Or did you just count them? Its little A to AA games that are crosgen. The big guns are ps4 exclusive. Plus most of thouse games arent even made by Sony. Could be publish by them I dont know.

But arent thouse improvements just things you adjust on a slider? nothing game braking like AI, more enemys or levels previously unplayable on base hardware. Technically a graphical bump.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there already plenty of games where you can adjust the AI level and enemy-count by changing between "easy" and "hard" modes?

That's not really making the AI more complex. If it was a shooter the diference could be an enemy just standing to it taking cover. Not really pushing anything. And more enemies can be taxing on the hardware. But that could mean 5 instead of 3. A simple game can have hundreds a complex game just a few. And with more power that few enemy counts can really be inflated.

Glad they are move on and change for better, while Xbox still on the past.  Also that's not "crossgen" instead an old port :) :) :)

That's a lot of port and not crossgen

Look guys, lets just all admit Playstation exclusives at launch have always been amazing. They always did an incredible job fully utilizing the specs on day one.

PS5 will be no exception in 2020 and 2021.

Here's the direct quote.

With that kit, it's clear that Halo Infinite will look and run better on Project Scarlett, but O'Connor was keen to stress that weaker specs don't mean the Xbox One release will run poorly by comparison.

"The Xbox One is not going to be a second-class citizen," he said. "We're building it so it plays and looks fantastic on Xbox One, and then everything else is plus-plus-plus, but we've got a few tricks up our sleeves that we're thinking about."

We will have to see what that means exactly. But I wouldn't expect a completely different game on Series with better ai, physics, level design and whatnot. At it's core you will likely get the exact same game on mainstream pc's and X1 and with some plus-plus-plus, in effects, resolution, fps etc. on Series X and high-end pc's.

Also, you got me all wrong, thinking I want the Series X to fail. I already said that, if the Series X would have the power advantage, it will peak my interest and I'll probably end up buying one. I also think it would be the only way for Xbox to make some sort of comeback as it's going to be tough after a such a disappointing generation with the X1. I'm just saying that the only way I see MS doing that is if they make it super clear why people should spend a $100 or $200 premium on their console. And they should showcase that right out of the gate. Not 2 years later when Sony already released a ton a of ps5 exclusives that look better than anything MS has on their series X. Because then it will be too little too late. Hell, we could be seeing a true next gen Halo by 2025 and who knows what the base platform is for the next Gears.

Oh no what will we do?!?!?!? We will just have to get by playing the superior 3rd party games while we play quality cross gen games. And then for 90% of the gen Series X will have the power advantage in all games. Woe is me!

Stop being so dramatic. The post above with Conina charts show PS4 non cross gen titles weren’t that plentiful. Knack, KZ, Infamous and Drive Club. All games that are average or below, with Infamous being the best game but hardly “next gen” as it could easily have had a downgraded PS3 version imo.

Your argument has even more holes.....congrats PS5 will release a few true exclusives (and likely not their best) before MS drops the cross gen initiative. You say 2 years, I’ll say 1 since the quote said both. Big whoop LOL.

I think you're forgetting in what kind of situation the Xbox is. Sony just had the 2nd best selling console of all time, while the X1 sold roughly half of what the 360 did. Sony has a lot of momentum going and like I said, the only way the Series X is going to succeed is if they come out swinging and make it crystal clear from the get go why people should spend $100 or $200 more on the Series X. Sony was in the exact situation with the ps3, it was more expensive and more powerful than the 360 and it came out a year later to boot. To make things worse, 3rd party developers weren't willing or able to make good use of the Cell and most games actually ended up looking better on the cheaper 360. The only way for Sony to showcase that the ps3 was more powerful and worth the premium, was with their exclusives. And while it was rough, Sony still managed to beat the 360 with their exclusives alone. This should tell you that exclusives are important and they can make or break a console, especially early on in the console cycle. Hell, we probably wouldn't even have a X1 if the original Xbox didn't launch with Halo back in the day.

Imo MS's strategy for next gen should be to at least try to launch with awesome games that showcase the hardware. By making them cross gen and multi platform, MS is shooting themselves in the foot as they now have no way of doing that, at least not in the first 2 years where it counts the most. And sure, you can assume that the first wave of ps5 exclusives will suck, but if only half of that list of rumored ps5 launch titles is true, it's already game over for the Series X. Believe it or not, but I would hate to see that happen and I would much rather see a competitive next gen that pushes both Sony and MS to release awesome games. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like that's going to happen because again it looks like MS is having an identity crisis, fumbling around and pushing the extras like Game pass/ Xcloud that nobody cares about. Sony doesn't do that. They are pretty straightforward what they're about and that's the games, not reinventing the living room or games ecosystem.

Basically you guys have pummeled him with logic and facts and now the goal posts are shifting to “well Xbox is in this precarious position they really have to hit a grand slam!!”.

Why are you still referencing this two year next gen window when according to the interview you’re referencing he says one to two years which means at worst, the end of 2021. Aka one year of next gen. If even that. One to two years could literally mean the end of this year 😆

Also PS3 was on pace to outsell 360 from day one. Sony put out a lot of good titles because Nintendo was beating them and they were coming off the PS2 which did way better. Yeah you should hope for a competitive next gen because otherwise we’ll get lazy Sony like we did this gen with way less first party stuff and less new IPs because they didn’t really need to do anything to beat Xbone and WiiU.

Also I don’t think anyone has really said Sony launch titles SUCK, just that they, like all launch titles, do nothing that really pushes the envelope. At least, recent launch titles. I think the DC is the last time we’ve had truly jaw dropping launch titles that really show we’ve entered a new generation.
