Another more scary thought, this would be the perfect opportunity for Amazon or Google to make their mark in the gaming industry.

Very true. Ugh...please dear god don't let Google buy them and make their shit Stadia exclusive. I think I'd actually vomit.

Honestly, if these publishers get to retain the IP they've been working on, and this deal gets you the exclusive rights to develop future Batman games for example, then I think MS should seriously consider making an offer. Sony has Spiderman, and that's a big seller. It would be a good idea to be able to compete in the super hero space, and what better way to do that than make Batman games.

Google would be idiots not to try even id hate Them for it.

If only MS could convince them to just sell off some studios independently, like Rocksteady, Monolith and NetherRealm.

On paper it sounds awesome but I worry what would happen if Microsoft acquires a major publisher, Sony might retaliate, then one of the next entries might retaliate (like Amazon/Google) and it will quickly become a mess of publishers acquiring publishers.

Also another thing that will suck is any gaming company acquiring them will result in massive layoffs. The healthiest thing for the industry would probably be if the studios were sold individually with their IPs but that doesn't look to be on the table right now.

Although Microsoft/Sony playing nice with each other might result in Google/Amazon snatching them up which would be even worse, Lol. If Microsoft catches scent of Amazon, Google or Sony attempting an acquisition they should 100% come in and make an offer though.

The thought of Microsoft having Netherrealm and Rocksteady is fun though, Lol. If the studios end up getting sold off individually then Microsoft should do everything to acquire those two studios.

They'd certainly corner the graphic violence fighting game market.

How would the situation with all of WB's licences work if they were sold off seperately? All those studios basically work on licenced games.

I don't think that's true. That would only happen if MS or Sony bought a healthy developer just to keep them from other platforms. But this is different. There's nothing wrong with buying someone who wants to sell and that's a very rare occasion.

Phil also essentially mentioned once before that he is against buying publishers because there's a lot of team overlap, I.E. Thousands would end up fired, Lol. I hope the deals with Activision/EA fall through and the studios end up being sold individually.

Staff are going to get laid off no matter who buys WB Games, and I agree with your last statement that would be the best outcome for MS.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I have a hard to imagining how AT&T think they can get 4 billion without including those licenses. The studios have talent, no doubt, but you can always hire talent. It shifts around all the time. The properties are where the value is.

"Any company that does purchase WB Interactive will not gain the rights to IP like Batman or Harry Potter, which is owned by Warner Bros. Instead, any deal will likely include a “commercial licensing agreement where AT&T can continue to get revenue from its IP.”

Sounds like an EA-type licensing deal.

Ah, thanks.

Whoever ends up acquiring them would end up with a mammoth lineup if they are still able to use those IPs as Warner owns the rights to them and this deal would be just for the gaming division. Even if not those are well established teams.

Microsoft could easily afford it. Even if a lot of those games stay multiplatform, like Minecraft, it would bring in a lot of revenue AND having them on Game Pass day one would be huge.

They would, though I'd expect half those studios to be closed/consolidated, I think the end result will be something like...

  1. Monolith Productions in Kirkland, Washington - Known for Middle Earth Series
  2. NetherRealm Studios in Chicago - Known for Mortal Kombat Series
  3. Rocksteady Studios in London - Known for Batman Series
  4. TT Games in KnutsfordEngland - Known for Lego Series

And whoever is doing Harry Potter, Idk which studio is though...

Avalanche are doing Harry Potter and Montréal are doing the new Batman game.
