These are idealistic things, and I would love to see multiplayer go free but at the end of the day, Xbox is a business, not a charity, I don't think it's understood how hard it would be for Phil to stroll up to Satya like "Yo, lets dump Xbox Live Gold, despite the fact that none of our competitors are doing so, because GwG which the minority of our users sub to Gold for, is bad. We'll potentially lose billions in yearly revenue and then have to spend billions to make Game Pass replace that lost revenue, putting our business in the red and that is if Game Pass ever does replace it because Game Pass represents only 15% of our Content and Services revenue, not to mention, the profit margins on Gold are likely actually pretty great in comparison to the profit margins on Game Pass"
There are trade-offs to everything and some suck, GwG fucking sucks right now, I think they should drop the price of Gold, but I don't see a scenario where multiplayer which the main draw of Gold is, goes free until Game Pass replaces the revenue + profit at minimum, it's just not feasible, I wouldn't be surprised if it put Xbox as a whole in the red if they dropped it, since hardware doesn't profit, Game Pass profits are likely slim and would vanish if they had to replace Gold lost revenue, Gold likely profits but that would be gone, leaving Xbox to rely solely on 3rd party and 1st party which is unreliable at times, I.E. This year, Lol.
