Backed up by facts though, I do agree, CMA looked more concerned about protecting Sony than protecting consumers, the CoD arguments are junk, and the focus should be on Azure's dominance, Brazil basically put down every "exclusivity" argument. Xbox as a platform is seventh place in PC? Yikes. Does that mean Steam, EGS, GOG, Origin, Battle Net, Ubisoft Connect > Windows Store? I'm assuming those will be the ones above it. |
I'm not entirely sure how Microsoft views PC platforms. Xbox app is intertwined in Windows Store. Battle Net and Ubisoft Connect are only for that publishers respective games, and not an actual storefront. So maybe Microsoft is including things like Humble Bundle and Green Man Gaming?

The UK regulator (the CMA) has detailed why it is currently concerned about Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

1. The Impact on PlayStation and games subs
2. The Impact on Game Streaming
I had to post it this way because Idas blue text doesn't come through via copy/paste.
Nintendo isn't really a competitor because they have Wii Fit and they don't have traditional games, they compete with fitness apps and non-gaming apps.
What. The. Fuck. They had to go back to 2008 to make an argument and even then, it would be a nonsense argument.
Omfg, I apologise on behalf of the UK. What the fuck is CMA saying, this is hilarious.
I'm actually a little unsure on if it will pass CMA now, if it doesn't, Microsoft will take them to court, but a lot of these arguments are awful and boil down to "What about poor Sony?!"
There is something really odd about CMA's framing, it's like they got their talking points directly from Sony themselves and have barely bothered to do any research into the market.

OH MY GOD!!!! sorry, THIS is Dr. Evil levels of stupid right here!!!
Yeah, I'm definitely not going to pay attention to any concerns the CMA has going forward. Not that they were positioning themselves in a fair way anyways!

The CMA says that PlayStation's success is not driven primarily by its technical superiority (as MS suggested). Gaming content is an important driver of demand, and PlayStation's competitive position could be materially harmed if CoD were not available (or not available on equal terms) on its console post-Merger. Whilst MS submitted that PlayStation itself has some exclusive franchises, such as Marvel's Spiderman, the CMA believes that these do not come close to having CoD's level of success.

"PlayStation's competitive position could be materially harmed if CoD were not available (or not available on equal terms)."
"On equal terms" - So, exactly what Sony is doing RIGHT NOW?
Why is CMA giving air to this ridiculous argument that even if CoD stays multiplatform, mean old Microsoft might make exclusive content, which is exactly what Sony does right now

On behalf of the rest of the world.
...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.
I guess the UK regulators are still living in gen 7. Nintendo Switch only sells well because of non-traditional games? Their non-traditional games this gen like those LABO cardboard construction kits and Ring Fit are far from being their top sellers, the top sellers are all traditional games, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, Zelda BOTW, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, etc. Ring Fit is their highest selling non-traditional game at #10 and it will soon be bumped out of the top 10 by Pokemon Legends Arceus (Nintendo hasn't released a sales update for Legends Arceus since 2 months after it released, it likely already passed Ring Fit).
