Nah, he's right

I don't see how Xbox totally losing access to a ton of JRPG franchises is a good thing, which is what will happen if Sony acquires Square. Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Nier, Star Ocean, each is a long running JRPG franchise that got at least 1 entry on Xbox in recent years (Star Ocean Xbox port is incoming later this year). Xbox would lose all 5 if Sony acquires Square, they're not good guy Phil giving Sony access to most Activision-Blizzard games, Bungie is only staying on Xbox because Bungie specifically negotiated for that during the acquisition talks, no such stipulation would be in play if Sony acquires Square.

I get some of y'all are probably sick of hearing Xbox fans complain about the lack of Japanese games on Xbox (like Final Fantasy), but there is a reason we complain, it's because Phil has been largely ignoring the Japan situation for an entire generation in spite of multiple promises of improvement. You guys would be complaining just as much if Phil was largely ignoring your favorite genre for exclusives and also often failing to win multiplat releases in that genre.

I'm of the opinion that Xbox could use as many games from as many different genres as possible. JRPG's aren't really my thing personally, but I know quite a few, not including this thread, that really are! And the only thing keeping them from jumping the Xbox ship are the core Xbox franchises that they do love as well that we play together.

Plus, in a different thread, Trunks provided the 360 sales numbers from the days where Microsoft did put out some exclusive JRPG's and it killed in Japan! We praised the Series consoles for selling over 10,000 over a week, but the 360 was selling upwards of 40-50,000 in a week during the release window of those exclusive JRPG's. So the need is by far there.

Welp, here's the aforementioned Final Fantasy event lol

Well, there is still a chance of an Xbox port of FF7R part 1 being announced on the Xbox showcase at least, possibly as day one gamepass. This kills my hopes that FF7R part 2 will be day one on Xbox though.

I got my Playsttion Five back from a friend and I was about to start playing FF7 again (want to hunt all trophies), but I'm waiting for after the showcase before to do so :) Maybe they will make it happen on Xbox, then will def. do that on my Xbox instead of the Playstation.

That was always unrealistic. At this point you'd be lucky for any Final Fantasy content on Xbox. It's clear they're more than comfortable branding themselves with PS and vice-versa.

Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Nier, Star Ocean; each is a long running JRPG franchise that got at least 1 entry on Xbox in recent years (Star Ocean's first Xbox port since 2009 is incoming later this year). Xbox would lose all 5 series and more if Sony acquires Square, they're not good guy Phil giving Sony access to most Activision-Blizzard games, Bungie is only staying on Xbox because Bungie specifically negotiated for that during the acquisition talks, no such stipulation would be in play if Sony acquires Square I'm sure. If Sony is willing to timed hat Final Fantasy off of Xbox, you know there will be no hesitation in them ending all Square Enix Xbox support if an acquisition happens.

I get some of y'all are probably sick of hearing Xbox fans complain about the lack of Japanese games on Xbox (like Final Fantasy), I'm sure we sound like broken records at this point, but there is a reason we complain, it's because Phil has been largely ignoring the Japan situation for an entire generation in spite of multiple promises of improvement from him. People would be complaining just as much if Phil was ignoring another popular genre for exclusives (Western RPG's for instance) and also was often failing to win multiplat releases in that genre as well.

Losing access to games is never a good thing. I'm not saying it would be. Do I personally care about Square games? Not in the least. I was really only interested in Eidos and CD games from them, and those are gone now, so losing Square certainly wouldn't affect me in the least. But again, if I'm a platform holder, do I wanna lose games from anyone? No.

That said, it's obvious to everyone at this point that Square has a very deep partnership with Sony, and there is absolutely no reason to believe that this won't continue to be the case, and - in all likelihood - expanded over time. Sony buying them at some point sooner or later makes perfect sense, so I think it would honestly be good for the Xbox Square fans if that bandaid is ripped off sooner rather than later. This false hope you have that Phil will eventually roll up to Square with a blank check and make sure that FF, and everything else you want appears day and date on Xbox, and is treated with the same priority as PS is a bigger fantasy than any FF lol

There needs to be more talk about the Callisto Protocol, i don't play horror games (i make very few exceptions) but it looks like a day 1 easily.

You say that like everyone on twitter hasn't been raving about it since the State of Play. Everyone agrees it looks awesome

Can't believe there's going to be less than a 2 month difference between Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space Remake. Talk about a great time for horror fans!

Thing is, that Sony partnership with Square is currently only 1 established series and 1 new IP, Final Fantasy and Forspoken respectively, and the Final Fantasy exclusivity doesn't even include every game in the series, as the recent Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy was day one Xbox. What we are currently seeing between Square and Sony is a far cry away from every single Square franchise going Sony exclusive. Kingdom Hearts was day one Xbox on the 2 most recent games in the series. Nier was day one Xbox on the most recent game in the series. Star Ocean will be day one Xbox on the next entry in the series. New IP The Diofield Chronicle will be day one Xbox. Dragon Quest 11 and Octopath Traveler were both day one gamepass on their late Xbox ports, and Square has yet to announce platforms on DQ12 which seems to indicate they are at least considering a day one Xbox release on it.

Xbox has everything to lose if Sony acquires Square. Xbox is finally starting to make some progress with Square, winning them over on many of their smaller franchises even as Sony hats their biggest franchise (Final Fantasy) away from Xbox. I for one think it is an awful idea for Phil to throw in the towel on Square just as he is finally starting to make progress with them. If Phil can help show Square just how much they would stand to lose by going Sony 1st party (both on Xbox and Switch), then a Sony acquisition may become unpalatable for Square and the price could be driven up well beyond what Sony is willing to pay.

Think about what you're saying. Even as Phil is making supposed in-roads with Square, they're withholding not only their biggest traditional single player game, in FF7, but they also still can't be asked to port the biggest game in their history, FF14 onto Xbox platforms. If you're ok with having your very biggest games skip a major platform, it's not a far leap to assume they'd happily give up the platform entirely if/when Sony comes to them with the right offer. Between PS and PC, there's plenty of business to be had. This is true for the publishers MS purchases, as it is true for whoever Sony decides to purchase. Sony x Square is going to happen.

Cloud Gaming Ban on the App Store is Anticompetitive

Good news for xCloud.

Now America.

Good! That's so stupid Microsoft had to make a web browser workaround instead of being able to use a unified app from the app store to play Game Pass.

FF14 port on Xbox is still in negotiations as of October last year:

https://screenrant.com/final-fantasy-14-xbox-version-still-coming/

Rumor is Phil is the hold up there because he doesn't like the idea of having a single game that costs as much per month as all of Gamepass ($15 a month). Rumor is the negotiations they are having are to either include FF14 with Gamepass or at least offer a discount on the FF14 subscription for Gamepass subs.

I very much so doubt the Sony x Square rumors personally, they have been around for like 3 years already and still it has yet to happen, each time a bogus leaker claims it is happening it doesn't. I suspect Square doesn't want to lose Switch more than anything, which is currently the biggest platform in Japan and Asia in general (by huge margins) and is on pace to soon be the biggest platform worldwide. Xbox can help Nintendo make a Sony acquisition unpalatable like I said, Phil just needs to keep up what he's doing, hatting day one Gamepass deals and such to show Square there is an audience for their games on Xbox. And Nintendo needs to keep hatting timed exclusives from Square like they have been doing with Octopath and Triangle Strategy and Bravely Default 2 and such. Those efforts from Xbox and Nintendo can help drive up Square's asking price beyond what Sony is willing to offer.

That rumor, which I hadn't heard, doesn't even make sense. Why would Phil care if a game on his platform requires a heft subscription price to play? If anything, it just underscores further how much of a great deal something like GP truly is, when it offers you so much, for a price at which others might offer you a subscription to a single game. And the gaming market has clearly shown that it is perfectly ok with paying such a price for a single game, if they deem the game to be good enough. AND the platform holders probably get to take a cut of those monthly subs.

As for the rumors about Sony buying Square, it's not really that I care about any supposed leaks or insiders or whatever saying it's going to happen. I just personally believe it's going to happen.
