It was not the content that made the 360 sell well, it was the year lead over the PS3 and the struggle developers were having getting games on the system that did not perform worst compared to the 360. Diverse content can be gained from any number of different sources and in today's market, concentrating on niche Japanese games isn't worth the investment it was years ago. There is way to many new talent getting into gaming from a number of different countries that would net way better sells across the globe then spending a hunk of change in Japan to only net little if no real penetration in the market.
Just look at the market now in Japan, consoles are selling like crap in Japan and the PS5 is getting beat by the Series X which makes Xbox fans happy but when you look at the actual total sells its just says a lot about the market in general and that consoles are fading fast. So the direction as I stated is not to waste money on Japan, if those developers want to see nice sales, they will come to the Xbox eco system because just developing for Japanese audience unless you go mobile is a waste of time and resources. MS best bet is to increase their overall sells across the globe. Getting games from different countries that cater to their market is a much better investment. This opens up all kinds of avenues for MS success because those games will be on the cheap. So for the price of one game in Japan you probably can net 5 in other regions and if you get a few diverse big hitters, you then also get more penetration in those markets. If the market continue as it does in Japan, you do not have to worry, those developers are going to be begging MS for a chance to have their game put on GP, especially if MS can get their mobile strategy together. Until that time, Sony I believe has already realize this and put in the block with the PS Now Plus. MS needs to work from a position of strength and growth not from the stagnant position of catering to a market that does not want them and pretty soon probably will not want any consoles. |
I don't know why you are so stubborn tho, I mention NA (North America) a few times. Elden Ring was probably at best okay sales wise in Japan but is a monster in the West and beats COD in sales. Investing opening studios in Japan does not mean you will sell a ton in Japan but you attract people globabally who want to get gamepass or try out gamepass for those games. A bit like how investing in Korea was called a suicide move that Netflix made but it was a huge victory people also wanted to get Netlix and Disney + is also investing in their own big Korean shows not just for the Korean audience but also to attract all the global K-fans. |
Probably because one game means nothing in the larger scheme. Yes, Elden Ring is a huge hit, yes it came from a Japanese developer who is multiplat. The game did not really appeal to the Japanese audience which suggest that its success was not dependent on Japan but western audience which is probably why its not Exclusive to the PS system. I continue to state niche Japanese games or did you just over look that word. I also stated its best to pursue any games that sell outside of Japan. Really, context is king.. Game pass is not going to sell globally based on Japan niche games, Game Pass is going to sell on how good MS 1st party content is and a consistent quality output.
I will state it again, Japan market is mature with 2 dominate OEMs that gets all primary interest before MS will ever see the light of day. Changing the current situation as we have seen nets nothing and development studios do not just pump out ports if they believe the market isn't there. Current Xbox consumers are not getting an Xbox for Japanese content, why would they when they have Sony and Nintendo and that isn't going to change any time soon. MS can spend huge amounts of resources trying to get one or 2 games that changes nothing for them in the short or long term while they can build the needed channels in new markets.
You know you are actually proving exactly what I just stated about MS concentrate on new markets and throw their resources there instead of wasting huge money time and resources trying to convince Japanese developer to develop for the Xbox with your Netflix point. Its almost as if you did not read a word I wrote.
