Transferring 1GB of data produces 3kg of CO2

As EpicRandy said above, there's no way this is true. 1TB transfer would be 3,000kg of CO2??? That's equivalent to an average 2018 car driving 13,000 miles.

Doesn't effect you? You happen to live on a different planet? If NFTs catch on it will affect us all. It's affecting you already, in case you planned on buying a new GPU or Series X. 25% of newly produced GPUs are used for crypto mining.
https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/crypto-miners-bought-25-percent-of-gpus-in-2021/

And? GPUs are in high demand but why should I blame NFTs for that instead of the companies that manufacture too few GPUs or their poor recycling efforts.

When lots of people commute to work by car, I'm not blaming them for high gas prices the next time I'm driving to my vacation destination.

You would be one of the very few people not complaining about the traffic, while stuck in traffic, adding to said traffic.

Of course one is worse than the other. For example, driving 10 miles on fossil fuel consuming car to beat up homeless people is worse than driving 200 miles on the same car to feed the homeless.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of term "whataboutism" but it does fit perfectly to your argument.

Actually no it does not.  What I am saying is people always talk the talk but do they walk the walk.  People will crusade about things only concerning the things they themselves do not do but when its put up or shut up to change their own habits, well then they talk about at least this is worse then what I am doing.  That is what I am talking about.  What I am saying, if you are not living that life, then do not go around trying to preach to others.  Its easy on the net to preach about environmental issues because no one can see how you are living your life.  You can crusade about cryptocurrency and people running their machines with their 3090 GPUs and latest Intel/AMD CPU all the while you are constanting download, streaming playing games running everything within your house constantly, driving everywhere when you could walk or ride a bike.  Consuming every last drink that comes in a plastic bottle you name it.  People talk the talk a lot but do they really actually make any changes themselves.

So you decided to reply with more whataboutism. I really don't give a shit who walks the walk or how many steps they take. Even taking a single step or change is something.

We here play video games and voice our opinion on some cryptocurrency shit being added to them. You make it sound like people are trying to justify their everyday life, cloud gaming hobby etc by preaching against this scam which is bullshit. It's defo ok to be against adding more carbon footprint into gaming.

There's literally no way this is true.

https://www.iea.org/commentaries/the-carbon-footprint-of-streaming-video-fact-checking-the-headlines

this article state that the figure of 1.6kg per half hour of netflix content is overblown up to 90 times.

It also state the much more realistic figure of 36g of co2 per hour of streaming video. and that figure include the energy used by your device for you to consume that content. Without factoring in the device a 1hour stream of 4k content (which is around 7GB for Netflix) only produce about 15g of co2

this is literally 1400x smaller than the 3kg by 1GB transfer stated by your article.

Edit: if you want to calculated your emission there's a calculator at the end of the article which take into account the device you use, the bitrate of the video, the network and your country for a more accurate picture.

Yeah I see that was based on a study published in 2012. Missing a decade of efficiency gains. It felt way too high to me as well.

The Eurogamer article has much more recent estimates from this study
https://openresearch.surrey.ac.uk/esploro/outputs/doctoral/Climate-change-implications-of-gaming-products-and-services/99512335802346

It all stays below 220 grams per hour, everything included. That only makes the comparison to BlockChain transactions worse. One transaction now compares to avg 2,000 hours of cloud gaming. That's almost 2 years of gaming at 3 hours a day.

So one is more bad then the other which means you just did what gamers do, you choose the evil that supports what you like to do.  Meaning each and every day, Google, MS, Amazon Netflix you name it are creating more and more server farms around the world that continue to run 24/7 as demand continue to increase.  In other words to continue to serve gamers and streamers habits, those same services and carbon footprint is not going down they continue to increase.  I doubt you or anyone else is going to stop downloading , streaming or playing your games anytime soon but you sure will get on that soapbox concerning things you do not consume or do.

I mostly game on a laptop nowadays, don't have a gaming PC anymore. I've turned auto update off, don't download shit for the sake of downloading to have it ready, don't use an external HDD or upgraded storage, don't fill up my devices with tons of games. I mostly watch cable still, stick to 1080p streaming, don't have a phone. And still go for physical games for the games I like a lot and will keep to install multiple times, likely on different devices.

But I confess, I have been lured into subscribing to gamepass for 3 months for $1 and have downloaded FH5, Halo Infinite and Psychonauts 2.

However NFTs have no business in gaming. Every single sale of them is worse than 2,000 hours of cloud gaming. And I still haven't got an answer to what makes NFTs better than what we have now for MTX.

Ugh, probably a scam to get other people to join in. Just sad.
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-12-16-peter-molyneuxs-nft-game-legacy-has-already-made-usd50m

Last weekend, Molyneux gave new details on Legacy as he announced that players could begin pouring money into the project by purchasing "Land NFTs".

Digital prospectors with a Land NFT can then found their own "in-game blockchain business association" - with the idea being that you will then earn your money back, and then some.

"Crucially, as a business association owner, you will have access to Legacy Keys," 22cans' blockchain business partner Gala Games said previously.

"These items can be lent to other people who want to start an in-game business in Legacy, making them your in-game Business Partners. As part of your association, they will share a portion of their earned LegacyCoin with you."

It's a pyramid scheme, plain and simple.

This is what I am talking about.  You state this does not effect you but then you go into this future world where you believe it will.  Is this no different then the arguments you have made against the same people that do the same thing with Gamepass.  The only difference here is that Gamepass is something you support so you defend against those same fears people have mentioned concerning where MS could go with it. Its the same thing with anything, people live in this fear of what could happen, well when that times comes then its time to do ssomething.

Except it really isn't the same as game pass. Concept of GP is from stuff like Netflix, Spotify etc which many people already use and had positive experience with. They're usually good value too.

NFT on the other hand is already being used in ponzi schemes and scams. And it's basically a next step of mtx, a concept that can be good but is constantly pushed to be predatory and damaging to players.

And it's not like some worries about GP aren't legit. I would not want stuff locked behind GP subs for example. Microsoft has made it clear so far this isn't something they intend to do and it wouldn't make much sense anyway, so there isn't much reason for concern.

So in summary, GP came from a good place, NFT doesn't.

You totally missed the point.  I am not talking about Gamepass as the service I am talking about negative comments period and people who defend them.  People have concerns, and they voice that MS can in the future abuse how they use Gamepass, I have seen plenty of those comments and I have also seen Ryu defend against those comments.  Its the same, thing, when you support something you are more inclined to defend what you support against attack then things you do not support.

Its not about the technolgy but the habit of how people either look to future concerns or look to defend something based on if they happen to support it or not.

Anything can be used and abused, even today people talk about how Netflix continue to up their prices on their service just like people feel the quality and content, and games on Gamepass can change and become subpar.  MS has a history of abusing their markets, software and services.  Lets not act as if MS would not or could not abuse GP just because of previous services.

The thing is, there are pros and cons to NFT but that is for a totally different conversation.  To sum up my point again, people only look to how something can be used adversely in the future when its something they do not support.  Since you already have a negative frame of mind concerning NFT, you already think of all the worse case scenarios unlike Jason who dabbles in NFT and have a different view.

Really enjoyed Origins. Definitely my fave in the series so far. Can't wait for the massive fluff in the next two games though. Last DLC for this game was fun.

135 hours in 2 weeks.  That's some dedication and a nice completion.  I put off my start on it for this weekend coming up.  Installed a new projector today and still playing with some of the settings, but I'm gonna be playing Origins on it for its christening. Tested for lag using Horizon 5 and I'm at 19 ms.  Best I've ever got on a projector.

Damn.. that's sad af lol. 135 in 2 weeks... I will say that looking at the save file it has me at 75 hours of total time. So I'm going to say those extra hours are leaving it on :) looks a lot better for me.

Started Odyssey... The lighting is so vastly improved. Love Kassandra (simpin hard). The naval battles are really addicting too. Another 75 hours RIP. Overall, really enjoying the game so far.

Yay I got one prediction right! I'll be able to join earlier next year and make predictions for more games. But TBH 9 of those games in the 2021 thread I don't really know anything about to predict anyway lol.

@NobleTeam360 getting flexed on.
