Yes, SNES was faster on the start but NES accelerated and had a total sale much higher.

Are you aware that NES did not release anywhere but Japan for the first 2+ years?

And the problem?

PS4 and PS3 sell much worse in Japan than PS1 and PS2 due to change of the market landscape there, we still don't put as unfair to compare they to the previous systems.

With so little systems involved in comparison if we decide to make caveats for every difference then we better not even compare anything. Because you won't find a equalizing comparison that will make everyone think it's fair.
