After reading the second article Skip posted it is clear that any slavery that happened in the land now known as Canada was done by the Colonists of France, England and also by the Natives. What is also clear is that no one who was a citizen of "Canada" has slaves, since new slavery was abolished in 1797 and the country only became official in 1867 and only became partially independent of British rule in 1931 and fully independent in 1982.
The sins committed during a colonization are those of the colonizing countries, and should not be seen as sins of the new country once it becomes independent and disavows slavery.
Unlike the southern US, the country now known as Canada was not built on blood and sweat of its slaves. The slaves were used as house-keepers (not that I condone that).
Therefore, as Canadians, we have no connection to slavery and therefore should feel no shame.
Sadly slavery has occured as far back as we can go. The Romans enslaved the Britons and most of the rest of Europe, Muslims captured and enslaved white sailors, the Egyptians enslaved the Jews, whites enslaved blacks, blacks enslaved other blacks etc, etc, etc. Depressingly slavery is well ingrained in human history and no country or race has not been involved in some way. No one should feel shame for what other people did hundreds of years ago. You can wish it hadn't happened and feel sorry for the people involved but no one alive today has any reason to feel personally ashamed for what happened.
What we may feel ashamed about is the slavery that still goes on today. Whether that's sex slaves being brought to Western countries from Africa or Eastern Europe, or Christian slaves in some areas of Islamic countries. It is happening now in front of our noses and is something we could be doing something about. If you want to feel ashamed about slavery feel ashamed about modern slavery.

If you are not proud, then get out and go somewhere you will be proud.
I'm korean-american and can say that I'm proud to be an American.
America - Fuck yeah!
As my parents were from Indian state of Punjab, I consider myself a Canadian not a Indo-Canadian. I'm so proud of my country because where else could a immigrant come to make a decent living.
and o yeah
if you don't like it You can get the F out -Some dude in South Park-
Of course they can, are you proud of your country? Then say it out loud.

yeah sure buddy. If we're so racist, how come all the blacks came to canada (From US) to escape slavery??
I'm sure there was some racism, and some illegal slavery, but we sure beat the US.
