After reading the second article Skip posted it is clear that any slavery that happened in the land now known as Canada was done by the Colonists of France, England and also by the Natives. What is also clear is that no one who was a citizen of "Canada" has slaves, since new slavery was abolished in 1797 and the country only became official in 1867 and only became partially independent of British rule in 1931 and fully independent in 1982.

The sins committed during a colonization are those of the colonizing countries, and should not be seen as sins of the new country once it becomes independent and disavows slavery.

Unlike the southern US, the country now known as Canada was not built on blood and sweat of its slaves. The slaves were used as house-keepers (not that I condone that).

Therefore, as Canadians, we have no connection to slavery and therefore should feel no shame.
