FFXIII might still launch in december in Japan though
Sony might put the pressure on Square, and Square might understand it actually

Wait a minute -- why would Square want to improve the PS3's situation? They've been publically complaining that Sony messed up and that they need to market it better, drop the price, etc. It's already very cheap in Japan -- it's just selling 8.5k/week despite the low price.

What? 400 dollar ps3 is still expensive to the average Japanese gamer. I know that many Japanese gamers who want PS3 are just waiting for the price drop. They are usually not satisfied with only Wii games, that's why PS2 games still sell well in Japan.

That is a valid point

What your missing is the fact that Japan normally picks just one console and sticks to it. They have made their choice for this generation.

PSP says hi.  Anything can happen.  One year ago, PSP looked like it was doomed there, getting outsold by the DS 6:1.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Square isn't interested in "saving" the PS3. They'll wait until the userbase is ready before they launch FFXIII. It'll be in 09.

DQIX will, however, very likely launch this year.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

Have you looked at sales figures since September '07 at all in Japan?  I would say it is already making a comeback.  Sure, it won't top the DS, but its hardware sales are doing fine now.

We don't know that.  The stark differences between consoles this gen makes it incomparable to any generation past.  The GameCube was nothing more than a slightly more powerful ps2 with far less games, thus it did poorly.  The ps3, however, won't have a shortage of third party support (due to developers either going Wii or ps3/360), and the type of games found on the system are generally quite different from those on the Wii (presentation vs gameplay).  And then there are the ps3's other uses (media center, Blu-Ray).  As the price drops, it's not unreasonable to think that many former single-console gamers may go dual-console by picking up a ps3 in addition to a Wii, as the ps3 offers many things that the Wii simply cannot (and vice-versa).

And then there's the PSP phenomenon, though owning two handhelds isn't quite the same as owning two consoles, so it's not quite the same.

What do you mean by make a comeback?  Sell well and thus reach a very respectable amount of units sold?  Or top the DS?   The latter is a rather insane notion, but the former is happening right now.

I mean selling at very respectable levels, but not top the DS. Doing what is happening right now.
