Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: No new DS at E3

EVEN IF they announce a new model, it's NOT....

NOT! going to have better graphics, or any majorly improved hardware features. All the current DSs would become obsolete, and that would be just about the dumbest thing Nintendo could ever do.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

What they should do, instead, is redesign the DS in a way that includes a few new features but isn't an entirely new product. Y'know, like if they put out a Wii with a HDD and DVD playback.

Then, launch that DS at $130-$150, and drop the price of the DSL to $100-$120. And offer both.

Or not, y'know. Ninty's never been one to offer a thousand different SKUs.

I knew it was bs. The DS is still too hot of an item to even consider a minor revision let alone a whole new model.

DSL came out when the original DS sales were in a slump and PSP was actually selling at par or beating it WW.

That is when the next DS/GB will be out. When PSP or PSP2 is eerily close. I wouldn't expect anything until late 2009 at best.

They shouldn't and thank goodness it's all BS, because first I just got a DS, second I like the current software with it and Nintendo knows that the DS has more into it then any one else. Third-parties need to start presenting more and new games for the handheld.

And BS'ers need to stop BS about false BS information.

It's BS on top of BS, damn....

The important question is "What could Nintendo change about the Nintendo DS that would maintain bi-directional compatibility yet would increase demand for the system?"

They could (potentially) make it smaller but without removing the GBA compatibility they're limited in how small it can get; they could increase the size/quality/brightness of the DS' screen but it is already as good as it really needs to be, and improving the battery life of the Nintendo DS would not gain much because the battery life is far from bad.

Nintendo is certaily working on a follow up system to the Nintendo DS but with how well the Nintendo DS continues to sell, and the fact that they're facing no new competition, it makes little/no sense to release a new handheld at this time.

The tech to make a "better" DS is out there, but it's much too expensive. Such as: an OLED screen would take even less power than the LCD that's currently in the DS.

Nintendo probably won't release another redesign until the DS gets to the end of its life cycle. I expect a DS2 in 2011-12

Exactly, with the current selection of software and watching the current state of the sales in America and Europe. It just seems the DS will never die down in sales. In Japan we are seeing a sudden shift between PSP sales rising, but nothing to spectualar to put the DS out of the leagues.

Nintendo just needs to release more first-party software on the handheld. I'm enjoying Mario Kart DS now, it's so darn addicting. I have some of my co-workers at the hospital playing that and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day :D

Lets see here... ARM7 and ARM9 aren't backwards compatible, so they can't update the second processor to an ARM9, or replace them both by an ARM9 dual-core, which means they can't add a second touch-screen to it (not that that would be forward-compatible, so I don't think it would happen).

Getting rid of the GBA port won't happen - do you really think they will cripple Pokemon?

I suppose they could upgrade internal memory to be able to hold more from DS Download + Play.

They could upgrade to 802.11n, but that seems unnecessary for the DS at this time.

I suppose a firmware revision that enables a web browser, Mii Support, possibly increased Wii-ness (channels, Wii store, etc) would be possible....

Please, PLEASE do NOT feed the trolls.

1) WiiFit will outsell the pokemans.
Current Status: 2009.01.10 70k till PKMN Yellow (Passed: Emerald, Crystal, FR/LG)

The current DS seems to be greatly designed for ease of use.. and its certainly selling well. I don't think Nintendo will change it drastically (other than offer new colors, of course) over the next year or two.

Who cares? Why make another? This thing is still selling hot. There is no need for a new DS. Maybe next year we'll see the DS2, but no reason for another remake.
