Forums - Sony - Did PS3, really copy 360 and Wii?

the home button isnt new at sony devices using the new xmb interface.psp has a home button since 2004 when it was introduced.so they decided to use a home button on the ps3 too,and because there was no space on the controller they put it in the middle!

I wouldn't go as far as calling having a DVD drive 'copying'. DVD was the standard format for movies and games for well over a year before the Xbox came out. It's like saying Nintendo copied Atari because they used cartridges.

This is a bit of a feisty situation we have going on here now. The main reason people say Sony copied Nintendo is because, the very day after Nintendo unveiled their amazing controller to thunderous applause, Sony unveiled their 'tacked-on' motion controls. Since we'd never even heard anything about new functions for the PS3 controller, it seemed like they pulled an all-nighter and drew up the plans for their conference the next day. This idea was exacerbated by the fact that no launch games used the motion controls well, and few have since.

Microsoft waited quite a long time to get their motion-sensing controller out, and even now (if it exists) it will only be a barely-used peripheral rather than the standard. However, the fact that the supposed scans show it being nearly identical to the Wii-mote lends credence to the fact they could also be trying to cash in on Wii's success.

So, the question is, who is really 'copying' and who's just going with what's popular?

He was being sarcastic i believe... oh nvm... now that i re-read it...

in business everybody copies everybody else, its how you stay competitive, microsoft, sony, and nintendo have all copied each other at some point, so don't worry about it.

Guide button? You mean the home button? o.O I believe the PSP came around before the 360 and it had a home button. Why would someone get so worked up about a button like that? Most things usually have inspiration from other things. Otherwise people would be pissed about game controllers copying off the remote with buttons XD

The thing that pisses me off is when people went crazy about "Sony copying off Nintendo with rumble" and then they laugh and throw low blows when they took it out of the controller for the PS3. They complain about rumble being copied when now it's pretty much a standard today and will be laughed about if not included. There will always be a start, and what is started might become a standard....so no one should complain about copying.

Of course Sony copied Nintendo. They copied Nintendo with the PS1 and they are coping Nintendo again. The more new products and ideas Nintendo comes out with, the better. It is good that Sony and MS copy Nintendo because it makes for better games.

As has been pointed out on these boards many times before, Sony introduced analog controls on the PS before the N64 was released, so they can hardly be said to have copied the idea. Analog controls had been around for ages before this, but AFAIK Sony were the first to introduce the dual analog that is now standard.

Analog was around before but Nintendo was the first to make it a standard for videogaming.  They took the big risk to introduce it as a main feature.  Sony introduced analog controls for the PS way after Nintendo introduced it for the N64.  Whether it was "released" before or after doesn't matter due to launch timings.  All you have to do is look at the original PS controller and see that it had no analog stick at all.

I hardly call adding a 2nd analog stick an innovation, its like adding a few more buttons to a controller, whoopee.

If they did they've done a pretty piss poor job.

Sony has copied and improved on things but they were quite original on all their consoles and the PSP.

The PS introduced the first dual-analog controller and an enhanced rumble experience, first fully 3D console.

The PS2 introduced a DVD drive, that supported dual-layer DVDs, in consoles, movie playback, re-introduced network capabilities for online gaming.

The PSP has enabled full media center capabilities in a handheld gaming device, first handheld to have an analog stick (i believe), full internet capabilities.

The PS3 is the first console to support game modifications, first to allow an alternate OS to be installed, expanded media center capabilities, first console to have a full virtual world that works in sync with all console features, introduced Blu-ray as a game format, first to allow an upgradable HDD, and restandardized an HDD.

Yes Nintendo has done many great things and firsts for the industry, same with SEGA, Atari, and every other company who made a console. Each has given us new ways to play or enhanced previous features.

So camera control isn't a big difference? Because the 2nd analog is totally used for the same purpose as the first all the time. It doesn't matter whether Nintendo was the first to use it as a main feature, it was around before then. You can't say Sony "copied" the analog idea from Nintendo when Nintendo "copied" it. Analogs are a standard now, it's hard to imagine gaming without them.

Oh, how was risking adding it as a main feature a risk?  "It's like adding a few more buttons to a controller, whoopee.", no big deal, right?
