| swyggi said: (Not sure how this thread is going to go) The best threads are the ones where everyone controls their emotions and at the same time do not criticize a person or person's opinion. Sadly though, many users succumb to at least one of these every now and then.
Even giving back-up to claims for a certain opinion doesn't do any good if the user giving the back-up to the claim is criticizing someone. This has the potential to turn any participant in an argument into a troll no matter how intelligent or self-controlling that individual is. Sad to say I've fallen into that myself a couple of times. The slightest name-calling, fad, or wording in any topic can trigger a flame war.
No matter how right you think you are, it should be a priority to never criticize anyone. If your opinion gets criticized, remember that you should never take it personally. One thing many users take to a personal extent is the difference between a statement like "Nintendo is a company" and an opinion like "I enjoy racing games more than fighting games". Both of these in their respective literal structures are in their own correct forms. However, that doesn't mean when a person says "Racing games are better than fighting games" is an actual fact. It's in a statement form which in the literary sense is a factual form, but it's still an opinion regardless because it revolves around self preference. Take me for instance, I love RPG's more than any other genre. Does that make RPG's the best genre if I say "RPG's are better than any other genre"? No, but in my opinion it is and other users should already acknowledge it's an opinion if I happened to say that exact statement. Now what if someone says "Company A is the greatest developer because....*supplies back-up*" and the back-up is legit, does that make him/her right? Not even close. It's all personal preference. Video games are in the entertainment industry. Because of this, agreement is divided on what is best in each category. The majority of agreement is not enough either because it's still an opinion and opinions cannot be proven even WITH legit facts. There are too many definitions on how to determine the greatest that it's impossible to put one above another in a factual stance. My number 1 rule about an opinion: You can't prove one, but you can agree with one. If a majority agree's with an opinion, it isn't fact because agreement relies too heavily on factors that are not constants. Factors such as where a person lives, how a person grew up, education etc. All of these have an impact on an opinion and if were changed would change the person's opinion.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.
I think the important thing is that we remain civil. We can bicker and argue all day as long as we maintain a certain degree of civility.
And if you don't like it, you can go to hell, jerkbags.
The best threads are the crazy threads. ;)
I agree with you but if you are reffering to the nintendo is to gaming as disney is to animation. Do a simple survey and find out that most people associate Nintendo to gaming and Mario to gaming the same way Mickey and Disney are associated to 2d animation. They are the figures that represent gaming, people who no nothing of video game will know and associate those names.
So if you were referring to that it can be proven. And honestly I'm shocked that its not common sense. My grandmother does not know who valve is, neither does my wife.
![]() | "Back off, man. I'm a scientist." Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked. | |

Common sense is relative.

I don't know. I like the chaos trolls cause once in a while. The forums would be boring if everyone agreed and a "heated" discussion is certainly good for a lot of... amusement. ^_^
common sense isn't always so common, yes, very true, but the point still remains that ideas are meant to be shared and tested for their survivability within reality. The value of any idea is inherently proportional to its ability to stand up to different points of view without losing its consideration a rational thought.
Furthermore, as a race, we need to be able to share ideas with each other, this being done through communication. To simply take a difference of opinion and shrug it off as simply something to accept creates a dichotomy of thought within our species. When I say that the Wii is the best console, and someone else says that the 360 is the best console, which causes a breakdown in the value of thought over what the "best" console is.
To everyone else, the word best qualifies that it is better than all others, having two different objects that are both the best in the same category is impossible purely by definition of the word. Obviously this difference stems from the individual qualifications of hte subjects stating these opinions, but that doesn't negate the fact that the purpose of any form of communication is to share an idea.
In order to have an idea shared, we can not simply dismiss it as opinion that only applies to that individual. True communication requires us to work towards understanding the underlying facts by which that individual formed their opinion, and then using those facts to form our own.
So to sum up more simply:
Sure, people have opinions, but we're going to debate them, because that's the whole point of having a forum; being able to share and discuss the merits of our ideas and opinions. With this will come both support and criticism.
Whether intentionally or not, the OP essentially has stated that opinions based on careful thought and consideration, assessing strengths and weaknesses of the subjects in question, have no more value than those pulled out of our ass. If there is one thing I always take seriously, it is the amount of thought I put into my opinions and conclusions, and I find it just a tad insulting when someone tries to tell me that effort is supposedly wasted.

Oh dear. This place is turning into Nsider quicker by the day. I guess Nintendo's old forums kept the idiots all in one place so they wouldn't intoxicate other corners of the internet. Now that it's gone, they come flooding everywhere else.
Lol, I can't wait for one year down the road when all the older users start leaving and all the dumb ones reign supreme.
I guess I better start the inevitable mantra: "VG Chartz is going downhill"
By life end:
I would agree with you but fighting games are better than racing games. Thus you're wrong.

No issues regarding behaviour, insults are like water off a duck's back.
BTW: The PS3 is the best gaming console on the market.
