Does anyone think that Super Mario Galaxy will have what it takes to be equivilent, or better than previous Mario games, such as Super Mario Bros. for the NES, or Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64?

Yeah, or you didn't give it any time for a response, and posted a few other threads, which effectively buried this one... Mario Galaxy's definitely going to be up there with 64.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
I'm really looking forward to it, I loved Sunshine (but oddly enough I didn't like Mario 64).
Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.
Definately looks promising. While I was not dissapointed with SMS, I was hoping for the same gameplay elements as Mario64. SMG is a huge leap, with graphics and gameplay, and I know it will not let anyone down.
I think its gonna rock. It will be to Mario (console) games what NSMB was to Mario (handheld) games. Easily my most anticipated title of the year!!!

Mario Galaxy looks to be simultaneously finding its way into new territory (the planet-warping stuff) and staying truer to the series' roots (no F.L.U.D.D.) than Mario Sunshine. I think Mario 64 was a 10, Sunshine was a 9, and Galaxy looks like it could be another 10 (obviously I will have to play it to find out).
I was originally skeptical when I saw the first screenshots and read early impressions, but having seen gameplay videos, I think it's going to be a blast.
For some reason I want Nintendo to resurrect that old "Mario chant" commercial from the late 80's, where it zooms out of the massive crowd chanting to make a face of mario on the earth, 'twas quite cool at the time. :) I think Nintendo should go all out with an advertising blitz to it, personally. It has the potential, from what I've seen, to be an absolutely fantastic game. :D

If the Wii really turns out to be Nintendo's first real successful console since the SNES, Mario could theoretically see a comeback to Super Mario World levels. Mario games have typically sold best in the US but the new DS game has sold twice as much in Japan so the Wii version could explode in both territories if it's actually great.
I liked Super Mario Sunshine more than Super Mario 64. Way more. I don't know why everyone's complaining. Never-the-less, I really enjoyed Super Mario 64, like every single Mario game that exists, but I just liked Super Mario Sunshine more.
