Studio founder for Eidos Montreal believes that Square sold off its western studios to slim down for acquisition, and they think Sony will be the acquirer.

This makes sense for Square as it’s still a sellers market (although that is changing fast), but I’m skeptical Sony needs to do anything else. They already get all of Square’s heavy hitters for pretty minimal overhead

I think a big chunk of the reasoning is that Sony will want to protect their access to certain IP.

Final Fantasy has been a reliably big franchise for them for a long time. It's no where near GTA big, but that means it's much more affordable.

Even though the overhead costs would rise, they would also get more income. Square is a decently profitable company right now.

Considering they are expanding, I guess even overhead and extra manpower would be good as long as they work the synergies and remove what is really unnecessary. And I guess they could have bought the western part as well even if TR would meet same criterea as Uncharted. My guess is they just wanted to avoid USA involved in the approval.

We don't know the contract, but it is possible.

Or they go full nuts, hire Amy while studio purchase is being finished by sony.

I know Aspyr was an odd choice from the start considering the studio had never done anything outside of porting the really old Star Wars games to modern systems, but I was figuring with the kind of backing the game had, all the necessary resources and staff would be there to ensure the project would succeed. Guess not. Sounds like Aspyr is going to have to finish this project one way or another though.

EDIT: Not a fan of Saber Interactive games either. So if it's true that they take over the project from Aspyr, that doesn't leave me with much confidence I wonder if Embracer Group is regretting purchasing Aspyr lol

Yes, sometimes you break while you grow =[ and aiming to high can just be to much.

I'm not sure if this is validated by the studio founder. But SE is a good get. It's not just about getting SE's heavy hitters.

They could make FF entirely exclusive (something which only mainline titles are). They could make the AA titles that usually go to Nintendo exclusive. Those titles are made from 3rd parties so it builds and expands Sony's partnerships with a lot of studios they most likely don't deal with directly. It gets them Taito and every IP that belongs to them. Another important area is classic titles to build up their highest tier on PS+: it's very clear that SE would prefer to remaster these titles (and thus make them available everywhere.

There's a lot of benefits content wise for Sony to get SE rather than continue their current deals.

Surely part of the equation. But honestly, I don't really see what Sony gains from CD. They haven't pushed TR in any meaningful way forward, Avengers was a bad game (even taking away the GaaS aspects), part of the studio is still working on Avengers while another part is working on an Xbox game, and their next title is seemingly another TR. There are better more meaningful ways for Sony to use their money imho.

Too bad. I feel for Asphr. This was the opportunity to really push to another level and clearly some individuals did a poor job managing their work. I can see Sony potentially pulling out. It'll be interesting to see what happens but I feel this game is dead. At the very least, maybe we'll see the ports of KOTOR 1 and 2 come to PS4/ PS5 now.

From what we know Sony and MS are wanting manpower, so buying the CD portion even if they aren't that profitable at the moment they have talented people over there so with the right management (likely cutting all the higher ups that likely were allowed to stay when it was SE) it could be very worthy (and get Legacy of Kain sequel kkkk) if the purchase was useless I don't think they would have been bought even if for that "small" price.

I wouldn't put it past current Sony to keep the Switch games, but also bring those games to PS4/PS5. Could be good perks for PS+, without interfering with how SE makes money.

They would definitely make Final Fantasy exclusive though, seeing as they already are. Not to mention, big AAA games like Forspoken.

One game that might be removed from Switch would be Dragon Quest.

Ugh......we may be in for TLoUs Part I level of leaks prior to GoW: Ragnarok's release. Probably won't be as a big of a deal since we know what the game looks like and it's not a remake, but, I just hope there's no story related leaks.
