Sony isn't fooling around these days.
For the past few years, Sony has shown great interest in expanding its 3 pillars of entertainment. Thus in the future, Games, Music, and Movies will be accompanied by Anime as a 4th pillar. Sony already owns Aniplex (one of the world's biggest and most popular anime production companies), Animax (the world's biggest anime television network and most popular anime distributor in Japan), Funimation (one of the world's biggest anime distributors and streaming services), and Manga Entertainment UK (the biggest and most popular anime distributor in the UK).
In April 2020, Sony also acquired a 5% minority stake in Bilibili (the biggest anime site in China) for $400m. And according to Nikkei Asia, the entertainment giant has now entered into final negotiations to acquire Crunchyroll (one of the world's biggest anime distributors and streaming services). Sony could pay more than $950m as talks wind up with parent AT&T (link).
