Nope, Entertaiment. Gameplay is the single most important aspect of a game by itself, but left alone it can become too redundant without the necessary substance to back it up. I would want more gameplay instead of cutscenes anyways, but the most important part of a serious in-depth game like MGS4 is a combination of different ways to enjoy it. The cutscenes could be a learning experience, or a movie experience if you choose it to be. You can skip them if you want, so there's no problem for people eager to play MGS4 immediately. Then there's the story which adds meaning to the gameplay. This heavily adds to the replay value and experience of the game. Why? Because it gives purpose as opposed to games without story and nothing but gameplay. In those games, the player generally could care less about the characters and what is happening during the game, making the player less attached to the game as opposed to if it had a story.
There are many ways to enjoy a game: you can play it and have fun, experience the games world and have fun, play the game and become attached to the world/characters, addictive gameplay and amazing story, etc. Why stop at one medium when you can have more substance along the way?
This is generally why I choose RPG's>>>everything else. I can have fun with shooters, platformers, and action/adventure games, but they only allow for a few ways to enjoy the game. As soon as I complete those game, I just can't seem to get the same great feeling again when I first played them. But that's just me, don't quote me on that. <_<
This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

You're joking, right? When I play games, I want gameplay. If I wanted to watch a shitty B movie, I'd watch a shitty B movie.
Can you just skip the cut scenes and just play the game? I can not stand cut scenes in games. They look good but I just want to play the game and shoot and kill things.
BTW: Devil May Cry 4- the cut scenes looked so much better than the gameplay.
I'm with Billy boy MGS3 has to little cutscenes I have played now for 11 hours and it have almost been too much gameplay. Maybe I am used to MGS2 but damn I need my story.
| The poster that suggested just watching Escape From New York must not have seen that movie lately because MGS 1 and 3 (at least) are better plots than Escape From New York and probably better acting. Of course, you may disagree... |
I strongly disagree. Both Escape from New York and MGS have equally bad acting and dialogue, yet at least Escape has the excuse of not taking itself seriously.
Watch this, listen to Raiden and Snake, and then tell me the acting isn't terrible.

Snake in particular is bad.
I don't see many people here complaining about game length, only the ratio of cutscenes to gameplay. Unfortunately, most of us have accepted that games are going to be shorter nowadays.

A deep discussion about gameplay length is taking place and you, clearly just seeing MGS4 in the thread title, pop in and say this.
On topic: The more gameplay the better.

And if I want to do both at the same time I play Metal Gear. This is why I love the series and why I just replayed MGS1-3 in the past 4 weeks.
Even MGS (PS1) aged pretty well, even today the gameplay mechaniscs are still amazing.
MGS2 is the best (for me at least) but MGS3 has the best ending. The almost 2 hour long multiple boss fights + cut scenes sequences are just awesome.
So, if you like MGS, then you want cut scenes as much as amazing gameplay mechanics. This series is about perfection, we want it all. Amazing story, amazing cut scenes and voice acting, amazing gameplay, amazing story twists, etc. We want it all and I hope Kojima delivers.
PS: As a bonus we get MGO... lets see how much fun MGO is during next week's beta.

Yeah, you're right.. too bad we don't have any mods to lock this thread

If you have 10 hours of gameplay that easily stretches to 13-15 hours with the cinematics, so you get your money's worth. Many games are that short now, including Halo, Gears, God of War, Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet, Uncharted...so if you don't like games of that length I don't know what to tell you other than play RPGs. I don't see many people here complaining about game length, only the ratio of cutscenes to gameplay. Unfortunately, most of us have accepted that games are going to be shorter nowadays. |
If you think MGS' dialogue and acting are bad then what is goo for you? Luckily for Kojima 5M+ people disagree with you, me included. I like the voice acting on all games of the series. They are as good as it gets in a videogame. You can pick individual parts where the acting is not as good but those are exceptions. Most of it is awesome.
"That fine design I spoke of integrates the music very well with a broad and finely-tuned effects suite, along with the superb voice acting we came to expect after the first MGS." IGN's MGS2 review
It's one of the few games iout there where the voice acting cast is actually news... http://ps3.ign.com/articles/776/776931p1.html
