Grave of the fireflies is a great film although not a happy experience to watch.

His colleague Miyazaki is a genius but Takahata was a master in his own right. Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday are two of the best animated movies ever made. In fact I’d argue Grave of the Fireflies is the best movie of 1988, animated or otherwise.

It’s actually in theaters in August, as part of Studio Ghibli fest: https://www.fathomevents.com/series/studio-ghibli-fest. Even though it makes me break down and cry every time I will definitely go to see it again.
